What utter, utter bollocks this list is. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is better than Rebel Without a Cause and Enter the Dragon. Transformers is better than all of these as well as Full Metal Jacket, Akira, Robocop, The Jungle Book, Trainspotting, American History X, Gremlins, Cabaret, etc… School of Rock is better than Ghostbusters Anchorman is better than Silence of the Lambs… Raider of the Lost Ark is the 2nd greatest film ever made?! Find this and more shite here: http://www.empireonline.com/500/1.asp Creator Topic Viewing 20 replies - 1 through 20 (of 20 total) Author Replies September 29, 2008 at 11:42 am #85145 Ian SymesKeymaster What’s more, many of these films are quite old, and so will have unrealistic dialogue. They’re so over-rated! September 29, 2008 at 11:50 am #85146 Pete Part ThreeParticipant Did you hear?; The Phantom Menace is the 449th best film of all time! Yay. I was slightly surprised by this list; presumably a side effect of having people name their ten favourites, rather than their all time number one. The problem with democracy, as Rimmer once noted, is that every silly bastard get a vote. September 29, 2008 at 12:03 pm #85147 Zombie Jim UndeadParticipant Never got involved in that discussion…It’s an over-generalisation but I do agree that a lot of pre-60s US / Brit films were stilted because of things like the Hays code, the studio system, expectations of behaviour / presentation, lack of location shooting… It wasn’t until the 60s that things really started to loosen up and you got films feeling verisimilar. Not to say that films before this period are of a lesser quality, but I can see how somebody might not enjoy them as much. September 29, 2008 at 12:14 pm #85148 ChrisMParticipant Shawshanke rated deservedly high. (Number 3? Maybe…) As for Raiders, I really liked that film, but I agree number 2 is probably pushing it. September 29, 2008 at 12:17 pm #85149 Pete Part ThreeParticipant See, I was surprised at the (relatively) poor placing of It’s a Wonderful Life (195) but then I realise that it probably wouldn’t make my top ten. It would easily make my top twenty but, in the context of this, it wouldn’t actually get a vote off me. All of mine would be 80’s, 90’s and 00’s. I’m sure Empire will be inundated with “complaints”, but you can’t really fault them. September 29, 2008 at 12:36 pm #85152 Seb PatrickKeymaster If Empire had picked the list themselves, there’d be more cause to quibble – because there really are some utterly bollocks placings in there. But all it really demonstrates is that the general public are fucking clueless. What, you needed a movie poll to tell you that? September 29, 2008 at 1:19 pm #85157 Zombie Jim UndeadParticipant Of course it’s not Empire’s fault. I’m just amazed by apparent trends in the movie-going public – that suddenly Raiders is lauded as the 2nd greatest film of all time. September 29, 2008 at 1:23 pm #85159 PhilParticipant >School of Rock is better than Ghostbusters Well, I’m done with this list. September 29, 2008 at 1:47 pm #85165 JamesParticipant It was the same with the Sci-fi list, people only remember the latest installments and current films, plus if it’s voted you get people with non fixed IP’s trying to push The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King to the top of the list, because they think it’s cool. The same thing happended on IMDB with The Dark Night, it was No.1 until everyone voted for Shawshank again. Lists like this don’t prove anything. September 29, 2008 at 1:53 pm #85168 Jonathan CappsKeymaster Once again, though, Empire have present this list beautifully in web form. September 29, 2008 at 2:02 pm #85171 Pete Part ThreeParticipant Yeah, I was rather disappointed when I saw it on paper. >people with non fixed IP?s trying to push The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King to the top of the list, because they think it?s cool You had to sign in to do it, so IP addresses don’t come into it. September 29, 2008 at 2:07 pm #85173 Seb PatrickKeymaster >I?m just amazed by apparent trends in the movie-going public – that suddenly Raiders is lauded as the 2nd greatest film of all time. Or that The Dark Knight is the 15th best OF ALL TIME. Crystal Skull and Phantom Menace made it into the 500, for fuck’s sake. So did Superbad. And yeah, such bollocks as School of Rock above Ghostbusters. Citizen Kane outside the top ten. People are fucking morons, basically. September 29, 2008 at 3:07 pm #85175 locusceruleusParticipant >Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is better than Rebel Without a Cause I think I just died a little. September 29, 2008 at 4:23 pm #85176 Jonathan CappsKeymaster It’d be funny is Empire was actually treating this list with the contempt it deserves. “Look At What You Fucking Idiots Think, For Fuck’s Sake” September 29, 2008 at 6:04 pm #85183 locusceruleusParticipant Depends whether contempt for your readers is good for sales I suppose…not that they aren’t fully deserving of it. September 30, 2008 at 11:03 pm #85287 Tarka DalParticipant > Once again, though, Empire have present this list beautifully in web form. Was that sarcasm? Oh and and re: School of Rock, okay having it above Ghostbusters is a bit silly, but it’s certainly not a bad movie. I know these things, I’ve seen the Spiderwick Chronicles. At the other end of the scale. Tonight I saw ‘Redbelt’ possibly my favourite film of the year so far (Save for Dark Knight). The audience consisted of me and a bloke who sat a few rows in front of me (and possibly fell asleep half way through). I think that ties in quite nicely with polls like the one above. September 30, 2008 at 11:41 pm #85288 Jonathan CappsKeymaster > Was that sarcasm? No! I just love the layout, especially when you get further down the list and certain films are emphasised with massive, beautiful images. If I’d change something, though, it would be to make it easier to browse the list by tens. September 30, 2008 at 11:52 pm #85289 Tarka DalParticipant I guess you’re right. The images were beautiful. The trouble I had was that the layout didn’t fit nicely on the screen I was using. I had to keep scrolling across to get to the next batch. I had the same problem. Oddly enough it would be easier to read if someone printed it out. October 1, 2008 at 11:33 pm #85477 locusceruleusParticipant That layout was awful, I gave up after the first four pages. Why the hell can’t they at least have a one page, basic list? Someone please tell me Papillon was on there at least?
