Hence why she looked different and acted different, with no more mentions of ‘her Dave’ or getting home. There was also that line she said to Kryten about the nanobots leading them to meet her. They resurrected her like they did pre-accident Rimmer. I don’t know what happened to the Kochanski from the other Universe. July 17, 2022 at 1:16 pm #275210 Flap JackParticipant Well, Kochanski definitely wasn’t the original at the (chronological) beginning of Back in the Red, because she’s in Starbug with the rest of them. For the theory to work, you’d need to nail down when the switchover between Kochanskis occurred, and also explain why Kochanski Prime never raised a stink about being falsely imprisoned for parallel Kochanski’s crimes… and also explain why she acts like she’s well acquainted with Cat, Kryten and Rimmer, when Lister is really the only one she should be at all familiar with. By the way, I’d like to take the opportunity to plug my much neglected Fan Theory thread, languishing on page 2, the poor thing: https://www.ganymede.tv/forums/topic/fan-theory-corner/ July 17, 2022 at 1:37 pm #275212 loadoftottnumbParticipant The switch happens……I dunno, there’s no answer, it’s rubbish. July 17, 2022 at 1:45 pm #275213 Flap JackParticipant Nevertheless I do respect any and all attempts to make sense of Series VIII, even if they’re ultimately in vain. July 17, 2022 at 11:06 pm #275226 Future Producer of Series IX – aaaaany day nowParticipant Let’s all just pretend 7 and 8 were just a horrible AR nightmare. July 18, 2022 at 9:08 am #275235 International DebrisParticipant I thought about maybe just skipping VII and VIII next time I watch it with my girlfriend, but Back to Earth, Fathers & Suns, and some jokes in The Beginning wouldn’t make sense. July 18, 2022 at 10:57 am #275237 Flap JackParticipant There’s too much in Series VII that’s important to the overall plot to skip that on a first watch, but I’ll always maintain – skipping Series VIII entirely actually leads to fewer inconsistencies and unanswered questions than if you watch it. The end of Nanarchy fits better onto the beginning of Back to Earth than the end of Only the Good… does. The only time Series VIII comes up again is the 2 references to it in The Beginning, but you can just take those as references to an off-screen adventure. It’s not really a big deal. July 18, 2022 at 11:19 am #275238 loadoftottnumbParticipant I actually like VII despite the issues with Lister’s birth. But yeah skipping 8 is probably a good idea July 18, 2022 at 11:25 am #275239 FormicaParticipant Is VIII internally consistent if you just watch BitR and Only the Good…? Or does Only the Good… rely on other events I’m forgetting? July 18, 2022 at 11:30 am #275240 International DebrisParticipant The only time Series VIII comes up again is the 2 references to it in The Beginning, but you can just take those as references to an off-screen adventure. It’s not really a big deal. The size of the laughs would probably confuse a newcomer. But I suppose part of the humour there is a nod to fans waiting 13 years for a conclusion to the cliffhanger anyway. Given all the talk of VIII’s skippability, you just know Doug’s got the next special lined up as a ‘what happened to the evacuated crew?’ episode, just to make it essential viewing. July 18, 2022 at 12:15 pm #275241 DaveParticipant Given all the talk of VIII’s skippability, you just know Doug’s got the next special lined up as a ‘what happened to the evacuated crew?’ episode, just to make it essential viewing. They get saved by Jim and Bexley, who valiantly return to our universe to sacrifice their lives to stop Red Dwarf from exploding. And then everyone travels to Fiji, with Lister using the time drive to stop off the hotel from Stasis Leak and pick up Kochanski. And there’s a post-credit scene of old-Lister doing the Future Echoes speech on the top bunk. Any more loose ends to tie up after that? July 18, 2022 at 8:27 pm #275252 Future Producer of Series IX – aaaaany day nowParticipant Any more loose ends to tie up after that? Yeah. What’s an iguana? July 18, 2022 at 10:35 pm #275255 International DebrisParticipant Yeah, how does Rimmer end up as a hologram again? And how does the ship change shape? And who’s eating this chicken?
