October 2, 2008 at 3:21 pm #85531 red-dwarf-movie-ripParticipant Phil you are a Douchebag CUNT!! that should have been aborted.CUNT October 2, 2008 at 3:27 pm #85533 AndrewParticipant “In his 1992 Senate bid, McCain was joined on the campaign trail by his wife, Cindy, as well as campaign aide Doug Cole and consultant Wes Gullett. At one point, Cindy playfully twirled McCain’s hair and said, “You’re getting a little thin up there.” McCain’s face reddened, and he responded, “At least I don’t plaster on the makeup like a trollop, you cunt.” McCain’s excuse was that it had been a long day. If elected president of the United States, McCain would have many long days.” Am I the only person who heard McCain’s line in John Hoare’s voice…? October 2, 2008 at 3:33 pm #85534 PhilParticipant >Am I the only person who heard McCain?s line in John Hoare?s voice?? The answer, I’m somewhat happy to report, is an emphatic no. :-) October 2, 2008 at 4:23 pm #85560 AndrewParticipant I’m not especially bothered by the shocking revelation that politicians swear, get angry and can generally be dicks. But I have to be honest and admit that, while I’m Obama all the way, I took comfort in McCain’s more moderate values – that even if this went the wrong way we’d at least be liberated from some of the extremes of current in-office Republicanism. Then Palin showed up and suddenly it’s a third American election on the trot where you genuinely fear for the lunacy and wilful-ignorance that may take hold of the White House. The first debate was interesting. Seemed to break about even, no clear winner (though McCain seemed to be ahead for the first 20 minutes or so). But these were McCain’s ‘top subjects’, which bodes well for Obama in the coming discussions. And tonight’s VP face-off promises to be hysterical. October 2, 2008 at 4:47 pm #85573 Jonathan CappsKeymaster I do have a horrid feeling that Palin will end up being disappointingly adequate (at least from the Republican’s point of view) tonight. Plus, she’s in a much better position to properly attack as she’s the one with all the pity at the moment, and Biden having a go will probably be seen as elitist bullying or some-such horse shit. I’m worried who America will consider the winner of this one, anyway. October 2, 2008 at 4:52 pm #85579 AndrewParticipant It’s certainly very tough to call her on some of her more grotesque opinions and values when doing so will only endear her to the large number of Americans who share them. *goes off to read Sorkin’s Bartlett script again, which has started to become a kind of comfort blankie* October 2, 2008 at 5:32 pm #85598 ChrisMParticipant >Am I the only person who heard McCain?s line in John Hoare?s voice?? I’m not sure if I’ve ever heard Mr Hoare’s dulcet tones. I heard a grumpy English accent in my head when I read it though. October 2, 2008 at 5:59 pm #85611 Jonathan CappsKeymaster See you in ten minutes? October 2, 2008 at 6:15 pm #85617 Arlene Rimmer BSc SScParticipant I do have a horrid feeling that Palin will end up being disappointingly adequate (at least from the Republican?s point of view) tonight. Particularly considering that other Republican pundits have been denigrating her debate abilities for days now, probably with the aim to lower everyone’s expectations. That way, when she puts subject before verb slightly more than 50% of the time it’ll be seen as a huge, resounding victory. Plus, she?s in a much better position to properly attack as she?s the one with all the pity at the moment, and Biden having a go will probably be seen as elitist bullying or some-such horse shit. Sexist bullying, most likely. “Aww, dont pick on poor Sawah Pawin! She’s just a hockey mom with five kids! Never mind she’s in the running to be the second most powerful person on the planet, she’s just a fragile little wimminz!” And yes, it makes me sick to my stomach too. Do you think I made the site? Is that why you’re upset? I just posted the link. Maybe that’s enough to warrant the attack. I imagine you’re writing a particularly nasty message to Google as we speak. October 2, 2008 at 8:04 pm #85628 red-dwarf-movie-ripParticipant To the People to Ganymede i Apoligize to all of you for my remarks except Phil it was he who never learned the easy rule about discussing Politics or Religion. To the rest of you have a great day and i meant no harm. October 2, 2008 at 8:08 pm #85629 PhilParticipant 1) To my knowledge, it’s not a rule here on G+T. 2) I am one of the only posters in this thread who did NOT discuss politics. 3) You are being a lot more amusing than you think, and not for any of the reasons you might suspect. October 2, 2008 at 8:11 pm #85630 John HoareParticipant red-dwarf-movie-rip, I honestly don’t know how serious you’re being, but with my admin boots on for the second time this week, tone it down a tad with the specific attacks, will you? October 2, 2008 at 8:12 pm #85631 Pete Part ThreeParticipant >Well, nobody paid attention to him the first time so of course he had to say it again. Oh yeah. I missed that. October 3, 2008 at 12:07 am #85669 DaveParticipant Phil, are you absolutely certain you weren’t aborted? This disturbs me. October 3, 2008 at 2:47 am #85677 PhilParticipant I’d post a link to my livejournal running commentary, but red-dwarf-the-movie-is-no-longer-happening-rip-lolz said he’ll abort me if I discuss politics. :-( October 3, 2008 at 2:50 am #85678 PhilParticipant Nevermind, I just realized being aborted would allow me to die with a smile on my face after that “debate.” http://chickenbrutus.livejournal.com/ Feel free to comment, but don’t talk about politics. October 3, 2008 at 2:55 am #85679 peas_and_cornParticipant I just added you. October 3, 2008 at 3:05 am #85680 MnoooahParticipant The followup commentary I caught essentially said: pundit1: So, the question is, did any minds get changed tonight? pundit2: Probably not, but neither of them looked as stupid as they have in the past few weeks so their supporters will feel better about that… sigh. October 3, 2008 at 3:18 am #85681 John HoareParticipant That is fucking tremendous, Phil. The worst thing is, she HAS got away with it – but expectations were so low that anything that didn’t involve her running from the stage screaming would be a success. But let’s not confuse that with, y’know, ACTUALLY ENGAGING WITH THE ISSUES or HAVING ANYTHING GOOD TO SAY AT ALL. Biden was a bit too meek in my opinion, mind. But I suppose it makes a change from politicians yelling at each other. October 3, 2008 at 3:22 am #85683 peas_and_cornParticipant >her running from the stage screaming That would have been SOOOO funny. However the McCain machine would have spun it their way effectively, saying that criticising her for being stupid is sexist or something. October 3, 2008 at 4:28 am #85684 PhilParticipant >pundit2: Probably not, but neither of them looked as stupid as they have in the past few weeks so their supporters will feel better about that? What’s happening is making me sick…the media are deliberately not calling a winner to these debates because they LIKE this neck-to-neck stuff. It’s profitable. What we have going right now is probably the most-followed American election since God knows when…and it’s been like this all along. First it was Obama/Clinton in a dead heat. Now it’s Obama/McCain. And nobody wants to acknowledge a winner to the debate because it’d shatter the “anything can happen!” vibe that’s fueling viewership and web hits like never before. For the first Obama/McCain debate, I felt there was a definite winner. Obama actually answered the questions in a substantial way whereas McCain was decidedly vague. Two of them claimed to be forging the way forward, but only one of them gave any indication that he actually had an idea of how to do it. So Obama won me over. (Not surprisingly.) Furthermore, CNN had a running, real-time chart of viewer reaction, broken down by political affiliation. There was no doubt to anyone watching that Obama was received far more positively than McCain. And I’m talking huge, visible differences. On top of THAT Obama saw his predicted electorates climb immediately following the debate…and they stayed there. McCain can make no such claim, and he seems to have even lost ground in at least one key battleground state. ALL of that points to there having been a definite winner of that debate. But–hey–McCain did put up a fight, and when people were reporting it the next day as there being no clear winner I smelled something fishy, but I accepted it. Now, however, cnn.com has a headline to the effect of “JABS THROWN BUT NO CLEAR WINNER IN VP DEBATE.” No clear winner my ass. I can respect an argument about the Obama/McCain debate, but anyone with half a brain who watched Biden/Palin knows there WAS a definite winner. There’s not even a question. Palin did better than I thought she would. I admit it. She’s not unlikeable, she’s just completely unprepared and ill-fitting for the position. She keeps touting herself as a sort of mini-McCain. So basically we had a strong potential VP on one side and a vague reflection of the weaker McCain on the other. There was a clear winner. But this election is only going to be profitable to them for another month, maximum, and I guess they need to milk this neck to neck thing as long as they can. And why not? It’s not like the fate of the nation–or serious global issues–is at stake, or anything. Sorry. Slight rant. Abort. October 3, 2008 at 7:43 am #85685 AndrewParticipant To be honest, if there’s too much coverage of a clear Democrat win this early it could have a negative effect on the turnout on the day – galvanising opponents and leaving supporters complacent. The BBC’s website coverage suggests Biden won, if that’s any consolation, Phil! October 3, 2008 at 8:25 am #85686 Tanya JonesParticipant >”John McCain…he knows what evil is!” So does Batman. Let’s elect him. This made me laugh a lot. October 3, 2008 at 8:25 am #85688 DaveParticipant American fellow #1: I say, do you know which state in the union Palin is from? American fellow #2: Alaska. American fellow #1: Please do. Stinging satire, I’m sure you’ll agree. October 3, 2008 at 1:26 pm #85708 PhilParticipant >if there?s too much coverage of a clear Democrat win this early it could have a negative effect on the turnout on the day – galvanising opponents and leaving supporters complacent. That is actually a really good point. >The BBC?s website coverage suggests Biden won, if that?s any consolation, Phil! It is very much a consolation, yes. Thank you. :-) Reading my comment back I realize that I refer to “media” rather than “the American media.” Without question I should have typed the latter…so apologies. There is a difference and I’d never mean to suggest that the two are interchangeable. The next Presidential Debate is very soon…I thought it’d be another week but I think it’s Tuesday or something. Election day looms. Depending how it goes, I might be sleeping on one of your British couches come January. October 3, 2008 at 3:25 pm #85724 DaveParticipant Channel 4 News of the British Media described it as the most exciting debate of season but said that Biden “seemed” to win.
