i know there’s the thing of “the joke isn’t funny if you explain it” but were there ever gags in Red Dwarf you didn’t get? and if so, what?

i never quite got what Cat’s “stan and ollie” line in White Hole was about, for example. nor did i get what “see you in ten minutes?” (repeat x10) from Pete was all about, and also Rimmer’s “steers and queers, which are you boy?” joke from Meltdown

This either belongs in here if it’s a deliberate secondary gag or in the mundane observation thread
But having obviously seen this episode more than my own family it only dawned on me on today’s viewing…
What the hell do you mean your will Rimmer? Brother, you are already dead

At the risk of not yes-anding, I’d chalk it up alongside various other instances of Rimmer acting/reacting like he’s alive, could be in danger etc. It’s just instinctive, and he thinks therefore he is, so is prone to forgetting he’s not really ‘alive’, and reacting and using turns of phrase that belie his ‘deadie’ status.

In this case, he’s so excited by the prospect of being able to deliver a life-changing, crushing blow to Lister, he momentarily forgets he can’t necessarily make good on his offer.

Or he does, and he’s just being Rimmer, and making a hollow promise to get what he wants, that he’ll weasel out of later.

    One episode earlier:

Perfectly reasonable for Rimmer to have a second will, in case of uncommon hologram death, or just being turned off for whatever reason.

There’d probably need to be a whole raft of new laws about what happens to dead people’s estates if there’s even a chance they’d be brought back as a hologram. Wills in the Red Dwarf universe probably have clauses stating that they’re only to be actioned after the hologram dies or is switched off, rather than straight away when the person actually dies.

Ah yes, I did briefly think about this, but it totally makes sense that Rimmer has learned it is possible for him to ‘die’ literally the episode before. I’ll let myself trout.

The much more ridiculous bit is the idea that either Kryten or Cat would want anything of Rimmer’s.

The guy’s probably been updating it since series 1

That world having holo-wills doesn’t seem credible. As unpleasant as it is, Rimmer’s ghost is the property of the Space Crops or JMC, no? Partly why I think Lister gambling his light bee away a better source for Rimmer’s existential crisis in TPL than Cat’s abuse.

Those organisations are presumably long gone, along with any practicality of filing a will, but deep future deep space is pretty respectful to holograms as a valid life form. The Inquisitor considers him a continuation of Rimmer’s life, the Justice Computer puts him in prison to learn his lesson. and the Dimension Jump drive homes in on him as the equivalent of Ace. These are all AIs, admittedly, so maybe biased.

Deep space? Deep state moar liek.

Space Crops is my punishment for trying to type anything serious.

Especially after the hologram rights movement, as detailed in the novels.

Any reference to 80s culture and stuff like James Last etc also went right over my head. And the joke about not wanting Glenn Miller(?) back, I distinctly remember my reaction being utter silence

I adored things like that. Gave me stuff to look up and learn about. Red Dwarf really was an education for me. Not many 9-year-old Brummies knew about Sartre.

When I was 11 for some reason I always assumed the second pair of socks was to make his sack look giant.

Wasn’t it? I assume that now at 40.

I’d say the entire genital package rather than purely his scrotum, but yes, that’s the joke, surely?

This is one Cinzano Bianco situation where I don’t think we’ll need to check with Rob on Twitter.

I’m now getting flashbacks to the seemingly incessant references to people’s ‘packets’ (mainly by Danny as I recall) in some of the early cast commentaries.

    #303520

It’s definitely to make his package look bigger in general

Sorry, I simply don’t believe that a man who packs their trousers is thinking “oh gosh, I hope nobody thinks that it’s specifically my penis which is huge. They better mentally attribute this exaggerated bulge to both my penis and my scrotum in anatomically correct proportion!”.

I actually know a guy who has huge balls but a modestly sized penis, so his package does look impressive but it’s all ball.
