Save you navigating the notorious nightmare that is Wales Online. The top 15 rare DVD sets are below, with Just The Shows making the list?! I’m 99% certain when I was in hmv in Cardiff the other day there was (as there usually is because they always keep a decent stock of Red Dwarf on the shelf) a copy available at its standard price:

    1. Carry On Films – Complete DVD Collection Box Set, 1958-1992, £350
    2. Monty Python and the Holy Grail – Limited Edition Castle Box Set, 1975, £300
    3. Blade Runner Ultimate Collector’s Edition Briefcase, 1982, £300
    4. The Godfather: The Coppola Restoration Limited Edition Blu-ray Box Set, 1972-1990, £300
    5. The Avengers ’62-64 – Emma Peel Mega Set, 1961-1969, £275
    6. The Wicker Man – Wooden Box Limited Edition, 1973, £225
    7. The World at War – Ultimate Restored Blu-ray Edition, 1973-1974, £225
    8. Quatermass Collection – Limited Edition Box Set, 1953-1979, £225
    9. Twin Peaks: The Entire Mystery Blu-ray Box Set, 1990-1991, £225
    10. Peeping Tom (Criterion Collection Region 2), 1960, £200
    11. Withnail and I – Limited Edition Tin Box, 1987, £175
    12. The Beatles Anthology DVD Box Set, 1995, £175
    13. Red Dwarf – Just the Shows DVD Box Set, 1988-1999, £150
    14. Taxi Driver – 35th Anniversary Blu-ray Edition, 1976, £150
    15. The Third Man – UK Steelbook Edition, 1949, £125

Yep, what a bizarre conclusion to reach. You can buy it brand new from HMV right now for £19.99. CeX is selling it used for £15, as well as having the separate volumes for £7 altogether, and as far as I can tell they have plenty of copies of all 3. And of course ebay and Amazon have it at affordable prices too.

I think whatever happens, Just the Shows becoming rare and expensive is a serious longshot. Things become rare because of too high demand, and not only is supply more than high enough to meet it right now, but the demand is constantly hobbled by the fact that the dedicated series DVD sets – which also have a huge quantity in circulation – are objectively better in every way, and the Blu-ray set is an option now too.

… it is possible that they actually meant to put The Bodysnatcher Collection. That would make way more sense.

Even then the Bodysnatcher Collection can still be picked up for £40-50 or so, not £150.

Well just to check I did an ebay search for it before posting, and there was one listing at just under £40, one at £100, and that was it. Neither quite up to £150, but few enough copies that the price could be volatile enough for it to happen sometimes.

Of course there is another possibility – that the ‘researchers’ got their info by asking ChatGPT what the most rare and expensive used UK DVD box sets were. The source for this story is the Express, so I’m not going to stake much on their journalistic integrity.

Side note, but Jesus of fucking Caesaria the Express are bad. I clicked through just to check if there was anything different in the way they reported it compared to Wales Online, and they literally force you to either accept all the marketing cookies or pay for a subscription. Like I’ve never seen a cookie dialog where one of the options was “Reject and Pay” before. “We value your privacy”. Yeah, at £1.99 a month apparently.

That’s quite common in a lot of tabloids now. I think it’s something of an extension of the EU rule that forced Facebook to give users the option to opt out of data collection for a monthly subscription. At least it’s a choice?

I remember seeing that for the first time at some point in the past two years, a relatively new thing yeah. I just accept all cookies anyway because I don’t care, but if you did then having to pay otherwise is insane.

Not just tabloids, the Grauniad and Independent do it as well. I sort of understand, these things are struggling to make any money these days. As someone who always rejects cookies it makes me even less likely to read their shit though.

Y’all should have bought Bodysnatcher in 2009 before all the copies burned up in a fire like I did. I also started the fire to inflate the value of my purchase.

♫ We didn’t start the fire
It was only burning since Moonlight’s been purchasing ♫

“Consent or pay” might be a little less disgusting if it actually removed the ads instead of just promising to withhold the evil ones. Also if they didn’t keep trying to convince you that personalised ads are good & you like them actually, right there in the same box where they’re charging you money to get away from them.

The main way Bodysnatcher is rare was never getting a Region 1 release.

Or like me, have a work connection whose sister worked at 2 Entertain and asked me for some input on something Red Dwarf related and in return gave me the box set.

I avoided giving clicks anyway as they were one of the sites which by virtue of being at the top of a search result announcing something was out, indicated a release date wasn’t even known at that stage.

But then I discovered some years ago that they were linking all their stories back through Fortnite (iirc) which let me know where they stood on news in general.

Think it’s Digital Spy now at the top of

    HEADLINE: When is [X] out?

    ARTICLE: We don’t know.

Anything else wrong with online journalism is probably ScreenRant.

Do they mean “All The Shows”, rather than “Just The Shows”? ie the 20th anniversary set that came in a tall, book-like box, rather than the more standard one that’s a couple of digipacks.

All the Shows seems to have way more listings on ebay right now, but the price range is extreme, going as low as £11 but as high as £190, so maybe that is it. There are no listings between £60 and £150 though, which makes me think the 2 highest price listings are from chancers who have little hope of actually selling.

Do you know if All the Shows even has different disc content than Just the Shows? Not that having different menus as well as different packaging would be enough to justify a 1000% price difference for the same versions of the same episodes with no extras, but it would at least add to the collector appeal a little bit.

Just to add another possible explanation to the pile, while searching around I found this old TOS/TUA article about the history of Red Dwarf DVD releases:

    https://www.reddwarf.info/news/2018/03/09/dwarf-on-disc/

And in it are some releases I’ve never seen or heard of – the individual “Just the Show” releases of Series 1, 2, III and IV. Forget The Bodysnatcher Collection, these must be the rarest Dwarf DVDs that exist! Maybe someone legitimately would spend £150 to have these, or possibly even just one of them.

Confusing to go from “shows” to “show” though, because it suggests that a “show” is a series rather than an episode.

The Series VI row has Hattie in it, I want my £150 refunded.

Clearly her agent demanded it as compensation for all 3 of her other appearances being partially or wholly covered up by the logo.

That makes me think about who you would sub in as the 5th cast member for Series VI. Liz Hickling’s simulant character perhaps, because she appears in 2 episodes? Or the Kochanski Psiren, to keep the consistency of the middle character always being Holly or Kochanski.
