Anyway, on the off chance that anyone else here is as absurdly infatuated as I am with the Mother series of video games (Mother / EarthBound Zero for the NES; EarthBound / Mother 2 for the SNES; and now, Mother 3 for the GBA), you might be pleased to find out that there’s a fan translation patch that’s just been made available right over here (since Nintendo has already said they’re not going to release an official English-language version). I’ve been playing it for a few hours, now, and without gushing too inordinately all over the thread or giving away any spoilers, it’s an absolute delight to the eyes–and, much more importantly to the plot and the gameplay, the ears. It’s even more wonderful than I’d thought it would be, and Shigesato Itoi is a genius. (The fan translation team is also awesome.) If you’re interested, you’ll need either a copy of the Mother 3 ROM and a GBA emulator, or a cart of the game and some other equipment; they won’t provide you with the former programs, naturally, but they’re not hard to find. So, am I the only one here delighted at the news? (Cue some wag posting: “Yes, you are”.) I’m personally holding out hope (very, very, very pointless hope) for a Virtual Console release… October 18, 2008 at 1:56 pm #86208 Smeg4BrainsParticipant > Have you never played Smash Bros., Smeggy? Wasn’t that for Gamecube? Never had one of those…I’ve always been a Playstation guy. October 18, 2008 at 2:15 pm #86210 PhilParticipant N64, Gamecube, and now Wii. Mother / Earthbound characters are in each of those. I’ve never played Mother / Earthbound myself but I’ve heard good things. Right now I need to find time to download and play Secret of Mana which just came out on VC. If ever I’d have the urge to rush through the end of Half-Life 2, it’s now. October 19, 2008 at 4:31 am #86220 Arlene Rimmer BSc SScParticipant I like the Half-Life 2 playthrough, Phil, so don’t go rushing on through just on account of EarthBound ^_^ ; but when you’re finished, you might like to give it a whirl. I for one have found it to be a fantastic RPG. The developers behind it (and Shigesato Itoi) clearly put a lot of effort into it–it’s full of engaging little details (the music, for instance, is candy for the ears) and flights of absurdity. Also, you get to fight hippies, sentient cups of coffee, little old ladies, zombies, and piles of barf. And that pile of barf is a real motherfucker, man. And Mother 3 is, if anything, even better (so far; I’m only as far as about chapter 2). October 23, 2008 at 6:55 am #86275 Kevin GParticipant Jealous Bass is the worst boss fight. Screw you, Jealous Bass. Screw you SO HARD. October 23, 2008 at 1:07 pm #86283 John HoareParticipant I’ve been meaning to try these games for a while, so the fan translation is excellent news, so thanks Arlene! I’ll report back when I’ve had a go, although it likely won’t be for a long while, as I have other half-started games I need to finish first.
