Remastering, remastering, remastering. That’s all we seem to hear nowadays. What I would like to know is your candid opinions on the Star Trek TOS remastered deed. Is it blasphemy to the original vision, or does it give you some new vigor for the series? I personally feel they could have left the show as it was originally broadcast, effects and all, sure they could clean up all the dirt and scratches but don’t replace what was originally shot. It’s like changing the RD models but to a higher degree of course. I despair to think that future generations won’t see an original copy of any film or tv show, when are we going to stop regurgitating and replacing existing work? It pains me it really does.

You do not exist. I am convinced of this.

I haven’t seen any of these episodes (and have no inclination to as it’s not really my bag) but there doesn’t seem to be the fan backlash that greeted the revised versions of the Origial Trilogy and Red Dwarf.

Not that I’ve done any research; just trying to come up with a vaguely interesting point for this thread.

Don’t give me that Star Trek crap, it’s too early in the morning.

Well they already have, which is why there hasn’t been a big backlash, we already have the original series untouched on DVD. Also, the new high-def remastering of episodes is basically replacing effects shots (a lot of the original effects shots will look far worse in HD) and NOT fucking up the show in any way, unlike Dwarf remastered where some episodes were fucked with. Trek fans have very little to whine about. For fuck’s sake, there’s a Spock movie coming out next Christmas. With Leonard Nimoy in it. What the fuck else do you want, blood?

Yeah but it leaves fans wondering what boxset to get, the original or the remastered, I’m not forking out money for both. RD is different, the body snatcher boxset is a piece of RD history and probably the last dvd of the franchise coming out. With Trek now some fans are wondering what is official canon now, TOS untouched or the ”touched up” version?

    >what is official canon now

If only effects shots are being touched up, as opposed to plot or dialogue, why would it matter? What difference does it make whether a cheap, sparky explosion is canon versus a flashy CG one? Canon is only important–if it’s ever important–when there’s a contradiction to be ironed out.
