I’ve really started enjoying watching UK comedy reaction videos on youtube (and Dailymotion, where some of them have a 2nd channel)

Cyborcat – American woman who is a huge RD fan, loves the cat and has done a reaction/recap of every episode up to Skipper as well as an in depth, multi part Cat analysis series

JimB media – just a British uni-student-aged guy who hasn’t seen most of the classic 70s-90s sitcoms and is watching Dwarf, Father Ted, Brittas etc. Interestingly he really enjoyed RD VIII after hating VII.

After Work Reactions – African American guy who isn’t actually watching Dwarf (but may do in future) but his joyful reactions to things like Harry Enfield, Father Ted, Only Fools, bottom etc really make me laugh.

I suppose Demons and Angels technically has two new humans, although they’re both Lister so only just.

There’s a youtube person, DiamandaHagan, who does reviews of each series which are okay. They go into slightly more depth than Cyborcat’s, though I find Cyborcat’s videos more enjoyable in a way. She comes across as more earnest.

Yeah, I actually edited my post to highlight I meant the main cast time travelling. In which case it’s the only non-VIII episode in which we see a group of humans in the post-accident timeline, which expands on tombrow’s point about why it feels so weird. Even ignoring the problematic elements and some of the crap jokes, the episode always felt ‘off’ – on first watch I thought it was very funny (and I still think there are good jokes), but even then it immediately just didn’t feel right for a Red Dwarf episode, and I’m sure that’s part of it.

I really like seeing americans and younger brits seeing my fave childhood comedies for the first time. its like making a friend/spouse watch something i like without the risk of them getting bored and leaving.

I guess, but how much interaction is there with the people reacting? The joy of introducing a friend or spouse to something you love is that you then have someone new to talk to about it!

Getting a new/younger audiences take on things like the changing nature of the show over time would be interesting now I think about it. Binging on something in a shorter space of time that actually had as many hiatuses and behind the scenes changes going on as RD did gives a unique perspective on those changes which us established fans could never replicate.

I quite like them, as there’s a sense of living vicariously through them or rediscovering enjoyment from things.

There’s a girl on YouTube who’s been watching old Doctor Who, and who avoided any information about the tenth anniversary story before watching (to the point of covering her eyes when the opening titles came up) and it really made me feel warm when she burst into tears of joy upon seeing Patrick Troughton turn up – having no idea he was coming back.

Philosophically, I agree. In practice, I have just watched watchmojo’s list of top ten Red Dwarf episodes (Krytie TV and Legion are both honourable mentions, Jesus Christ). I think both reaction videos and watchmojo lists prey on the same impulse to hear other people talk about something I love. It’s the same impulse that led me to Ganymede and Titan, probably, although reading an article on G&T is obviously the best choice of something to do at any given time, if we’re not counting the all time number one.
