What’s going on with Danny’s hair in that photo?

I was going to mention this. it looks like it was taken during the last scene of The End, but Danny’s hair is not right at all.

Yeah, I did wonder. Was there ever an aborted shoot?

maybe there was one that involved the technician’s strike?

Erm, it’d just be from the original studio session of The End, wouldn’t it? Lister’s wearing his armband from the funeral scene.

How perceptive of you, Mr. Symes. It’s those cute little flaws that keep a scene interesting.

Great pic. Who would’ve believed it – with a star of that calibre!

Wait, we are talking about Cheggers, aren’t we?

There’s something different about the window behind Danny… maybe why it’s partially covered up by the logo? Looks like it might possibly even be an early dress rehersal.

I’ve definitely never seen Danny with hair like that. A rehearsal, perhaps?

I’ve definitely never seen Danny with hair like that. Which is making me seek for a more complicated explanation.

Possibly from the very first series sessions aborted to to the electrician’s strike? Did they ever get in the studio at all, just for a pre-record? Or maybe the set isn’t even *in* the studio – was it purely erected for the photo opportunity?

Fascinating photo. I’ve never seen it before anywhere.

Rimmer’s jacket is the giveaway, I think. He doesn’t wear that in the original broadcast version of the scene OR the original assembly.

But he does wear it in this version of the funeral scene:

    http://www.reddwarf.co.uk/gallery/index.cfm?page=series-1&image=1-19

My opinion on the final, re-shot version of The End – and it’s only a semi-informed theory – is that they did try a second time to capture the funeral and re-do the ending, figuring that a ‘darker’ Rimmer outfit better played into the mood of the scene, but still couldn’t get it right, and eventually shot a THIRD version of the closing scene and a different, funeral-less Cat intro. Which is what was eventually used.

But no matter how much combing through tapes we did, we could never locate these theoretical scenes. No paperwork suggested anything either way, and nobody involved could recall that kind of detail. The Original Assembly is definitively the FIRST version of the episode, the thing the audience saw, and the broadcast version is the last…but the lost ‘jacket’ sequences? Somewhere in the middle, I guess.

Unless they’re from decided-against dress rehearsals. That could be the case…

Is that the same font on that Dwarf logo as they used in Series 8 on all the lilac prison uniforms and signs and stuff? No wonder it looked dated!

“The stills photographer isn’t allowed to shoot on set while the cameras are rolling, so the only time that you get with the actors in full costume and make up is during the camera rehearsal” – Paul Grant (Re: Red Dwarf III)

Chances are they had photos taken during a rehearsal, perhaps before they opted for the Cat hairstyle we came to know.
