As it turns out, a non-shit copy could not be tracked down. Bollocks. My next plan is to try and remember which American studios were responsible for the pilot and see if I have any contacts there who might have worked on it or possibly have had access to the pilot at any time. I have been able to snag a copy of that just-barely-watchable version that everybody else presumably has, so seems to me that now, with the server move and everybody being all busy-like, is the perfect time to record a Dwarfcast! I might even be able to drag along a Token American™ for the ride – I know a couple of American Red Dwarf fans who haven’t seen the pilot yet. Anyone else interested? I’ll take part if someone can explain Skype to me. October 28, 2009 at 9:45 am #105388 hummingbirdParticipant > I?ll take part if someone can explain Skype to me. ditto I’ve never had the stamina to watch it all the way through before, so it would be … an experience. October 28, 2009 at 11:04 am #105392 Danny StephensonKeymaster I’ve seen it a few times now. I’ve found that it does get less painful, the more you watch it mind.. October 28, 2009 at 11:22 am #105394 Pete Part ThreeParticipant It’s not very good, but it’s better than So Haunt Me. October 28, 2009 at 11:32 am #105395 hummingbirdParticipant But is it better than Hyperdrive? October 28, 2009 at 11:50 am #105396 JamesTCParticipant It does have one really good joke in it. October 28, 2009 at 12:28 pm #105397 Pete Part ThreeParticipant EDIT : This is ridiculously similar to my comments back in January. KTHXBYE. October 28, 2009 at 5:38 pm #105398 Kris CarterParticipant I’d be up for it. I’d even defend it – I don’t think it’s as bad as everyone says it is. Granted, it’s not good, but it’s not totally rubbish. October 28, 2009 at 5:59 pm #105399 BlisschickParticipant I couldn’t get through the first third of it. I think those that can must have a higher pain tolerance than me. Fear is the mind killer (or a really bad US pilot of a great show). October 28, 2009 at 7:38 pm #105400 PhilParticipant I’d participate, except for the whole “having to watch it” thing. Like Blisschick, I gave it a shot at some point. I know I didn’t make it anywhere near 10 minutes into the thing. Probably more like…3. And then I probably kicked my dog. October 28, 2009 at 8:53 pm #105402 Mr-StabbyParticipant It’s definitely funnier than the Original Assembly of ‘The End’ in my view. I reckon if it was given a full series and a decent Rimmer actor found then it could have been really good. October 29, 2009 at 12:45 am #105404 Phil1034Participant > a decent Rimmer actor A lousy Rimmer perhaps, but Chris Eigeman was awesome in Gilmore Girls. October 29, 2009 at 1:06 am #105406 JonsmadParticipant I’d listen. So it’s a USA Dwarfcast, great. And Dwarfcast was invented by G&T a bunch of funny clever UK Red Dwarf fans, so you American’s want to take their ideas and do a version of that, because you really like what they do. Only you dont want any of them in it except for maybe poaching Seb Patrick who’s not allowed to tell the others about it, and instead you’ll replace the rest of the G&T voices with hunkier sounding US dudes who are less portly, and then you are going to cut out all the swearing because US listeners are more sensitive you think, and change all references to Iain Lee being a complete ballsack to comments about Jay Leno needing to shut his fat head, and you’ll take the original words from a Dwarfcast and use some of them but build up Tanya’s replacement to be more of a love interest who interjects with comments about the Sex and the City movie version, and to be honest now you’ve thought about it a bit longer, your actually not sure much of it will be talk about red dwarf, as it would be better to keep the title but instead talk more about America’s got Talent and the latest series of Lost, that’s popular and how podcasts should be. Is that how it’s going to work, then? No, but seriously, Good luck. October 29, 2009 at 1:13 am #105407 BlisschickParticipant I think that would pretty much cover it, Jon. Wow, you’re good! :P October 29, 2009 at 7:45 am #105409 Seb PatrickKeymaster >A lousy Rimmer perhaps, but Chris Eigeman was awesome in Gilmore Girls. And in Malcolm in the Middle. Jonsmad, I love you. October 29, 2009 at 2:01 pm #105412 CarlitoParticipant Nice idea. I’d like to offer my 2 cents via skype! October 29, 2009 at 2:31 pm #105415 Kris CarterParticipant I like how (according to IMDB at least) Anthony Fuscle, who played the 2nd version of Rimmer, has been in NOTHING else. Ever. October 29, 2009 at 3:33 pm #105416 Ben PaddonParticipant Joke’s on you, Jonsmad! I’m English! Ha! October 29, 2009 at 4:22 pm #105418 Pete Part ThreeParticipant So is Jane Leeves. She was still shit. October 29, 2009 at 4:36 pm #105420 RidleyParticipant I thought RD USA was mostly okay. Mostly. More issues with delivery than content, same as with Hyperdrive. October 29, 2009 at 11:21 pm #105427 Ben PaddonParticipant Really? I thought that the delivery actually saved a lot of jokes in Hyperdrive. As for RD USA… Te biggest problem is probably Rimmer, who is given far too little screen time. Which os actually a saving grace considering how shit the actor was. October 30, 2009 at 12:22 am #105432 JamesTCParticipant http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ud-dPqgmRR0&feature=channel 8:20 onwards, the one joke I laugh at in the episode, it never fails to make me giggle. October 30, 2009 at 2:46 am #105433 CarlitoParticipant Without watching the vid (honest) I’m going to assume – probably incorrectly – that its the fire exit sign gag? Probably the only joke I like in the whole show. Right, I’m gonna watch the vid…. Hmm, I may have been correct there. What ho! October 30, 2009 at 2:48 am #105434 CarlitoParticipant I also like “you come from Earth? do you know a guy called Harry Johnson?” and Kryten’s performance in that whole scene. Two bright spots in the whole thing, and both come from Bobby. October 30, 2009 at 3:14 am #105435 RidleyParticipant Really? I thought that the delivery actually saved a lot of jokes in Hyperdrive. As for RD USA? Te biggest problem is probably Rimmer, who is given far too little screen time. Which os actually a saving grace considering how shit the actor was. But you like JEFFERS. I don’t mind the Nilesish Rimmer. Prefer the second one though. I’d get someone likable to play Kochanski. Can’t really explain how I hear the Holly lines being said ‘correctly’ to my ear. More of indifference like the “It broke apart and killed everyone! :D” delivery though. I’m sure Jane Leeves is capable of it but get Katherine Parkinson to do it or something. And I like Terry Farrell’s cat prowl and “ONE MAN?!” outburst in the second pilot. October 30, 2009 at 4:04 am #105436 Ben PaddonParticipant The second pilot is interesting, but if I were a television executive I wouldn’t commission a series based on it. Anyway, let’s coordinate something. Let’s do it. Let’s fall in love. Or, alternatively, we could record a commentary. Who else is in? October 30, 2009 at 6:46 am #105437 MANI506Participant I just watched the first third of the US pilot. It is funny. Not no, yeah. Mainly Kryten (‘aahhhh’) but Craig Bierko is good too. I went to DJ 97 and 98 hoping to see this but didn’t get to see it until youtube cropped up. Would’ve been a solid American sitcom. Sadly we’d have been denied series VI and Pete Part Two if it had gone ahead. October 30, 2009 at 7:54 am #105438 redhead85Participant It was screened at DJ 2002. I sat through the entire thing. Like the others above have been saying, there are flickers of funny, but it’s nowhere near our much-loved original. There was sweet tea and biscuits offered at the end. October 30, 2009 at 2:02 pm #105440 PhilParticipant >There was sweet tea and biscuits offered at the end. That’s the best justification I’ve heard yet for sitting through the whole thing. Ben, what are you offering at the end of this ‘cast? October 30, 2009 at 2:53 pm #105442 RidleyParticipant You’ll get your own seat in the cockpit, and you’ll be in control of at least five buttons… October 30, 2009 at 8:58 pm #105446 CarlitoParticipant > Anyway, let?s coordinate something. Let?s do it. Let?s fall in love. Or, alternatively, we could record a commentary. Who else is in? Me. Tonight? October 30, 2009 at 11:56 pm #105451 Ben PaddonParticipant This weekend is bad, what with the whole “Halloween” thing happening (I’m off tonight for a party and won’t be back until Sunday, probably). However Monday is currently looking free all ’round assuming I don’t get the job I interviewed for at NBC yesterday. If I get the job then obviously that buggers the idea up (“tonight” in the UK becomes “midday/early afternoon” for me here on the US West Coast) so next weekend would be better. Saturday or Sunday night, for instance. October 31, 2009 at 12:56 am #105455 JamesTCParticipant >However Monday is currently looking free all ?round assuming I don?t get the job I interviewed for at NBC yesterday. If you do get the job there could you please destroy the channel from the inside? I would be very happy if you did. October 31, 2009 at 2:51 am #105459 CarlitoParticipant Or convince them, and the creators and cast, to bring back Seinfeld full time. That is all. October 31, 2009 at 9:58 am #105460 Seb PatrickKeymaster >If you do get the job there could you please destroy the channel from the inside? I would be very happy if you did. Sod off, they make the Office. Also, how can the existence of a channel that doesn’t broadcast in your country in any way negatively impact your life? October 31, 2009 at 11:07 am #105461 JamesTCParticipant I hold a grudge and they cancelled My Name is Earl. October 31, 2009 at 6:22 pm #105463 BlisschickParticipant At least tell them that Leno is no funnier at 9 pm than he is at 10:30. October 31, 2009 at 11:13 pm #105467 Ben PaddonParticipant Duly noted. November 1, 2009 at 10:01 pm #105481 Bob LoblawParticipant And get them to buy Supernatural, then destroy the CW. November 2, 2009 at 11:20 pm #105504 Tarka DalParticipant Whilst the pilot isn’t great, I’ve never thought ‘The End’ was all that good either. Had the US pilot succeeded in spinning-off into it’s own series, which then got progressively better (as Dwarf mostl did) then perhaps we would view it differently. November 3, 2009 at 11:38 am #105528 Jonathan CappsKeymaster > I?ve never thought ?The End? was all that good either GET OUT. November 3, 2009 at 11:52 am #105531 TheLeenParticipant Been waiting for that ♥ November 3, 2009 at 3:25 pm #105539 Seb PatrickKeymaster 32/52 November 3, 2009 at 3:29 pm #105540 DaveParticipant Babylon 5 is a big pile of shit. November 3, 2009 at 10:32 pm #105549 Tarka DalParticipant > GET OUT. It’s warm n’ cosy rather than outright funneh. November 14, 2009 at 1:39 am #106082 Ben PaddonParticipant Okay, sod it. Let’s do this thing. I’ll start by suggesting we get together on Skype on Wednesday November 18th @ 9:00pm GMT. It’s soon but not too soon, and it’s at an hour when people will probably be awake. I’ve put the AVI of the US pilot somewhere to download. It’s the standard grainy-strainy death-o-vision version that everybody else probably already has (AVI format, 272MB, 25mins 33secs). I can share the link to anyone who wants to join in. Incidentally my Skype handle is Squirminator2k. Please let me know who you are when you add me. November 14, 2009 at 4:41 pm #106099 CarlitoParticipant So why exactly are we doing this? Will it go on G&T? November 14, 2009 at 4:51 pm #106100 ori-STUDFARMParticipant Is this invitation open to “everyone” around here?…..Or only those that know anything about Red Dwarf :D November 14, 2009 at 5:55 pm #106102 Ben PaddonParticipant > So why exactly are we doing this? Will it go on G&T? For fun, mostly. Not being G&T staff I have no say in what happens with it. Probably I’ll slap it up on the Jump Leads site, or find something else to do with it. > Is this invitation open to ?everyone? around here??..Or only those that know anything about Red Dwarf :D Anyone who wants to join is welcome to do so. Obviously you need to have a copy of the pilot. It’s not difficult to find, but I have made it slightly easier for people who want to join in but don’t currently have the pilot on hand.
