I did a post about this yesterday that was thoroughly eaten by the G&T editing feature, so here we go again – the entire run of Red Dwarf, including series XI, is now on BritBox in the US. I’ve checked and there’s no music replacement, no substitutions of Xtended or ReMastered episodes… it all seems pretty kosher.

TOS hasn’t posted about this yet – it’s not even listed on their On Demand page – but it’s a cool find if you happen to be one of the three people who frequent this site who don’t own any of the DVDs.

I tweeted G&T Towers (aka Broadcunting House) about this a few weeks ago as I have never seen this picture of Rimmer in a hat before.

I like the image used for Waiting for God. Nothing sums the episode up worse than that image.

What’s the story behind the ‘Only the Good’ image? Lister with a mustache? I don’t remember that.
Also the ‘Tikka To Ride’ image appears to be some kind of behind-the-scenes rehearsal photo (Rimmer and Kryten aren’t in their proper costumes).

It’s interesting that this site has access to these seemingly rare photographs (and also quite interesting that it appears to be some kind of BBC / ITV joint enterprise).

That’s the mirror universe Lister with the mustache. Only in a deleted scene.

Is that Cat’s Canary suit… on Terrorform?

There are perhaps two somewhat right images on VII…

    Toxteth O-Grady

No, that’s Cat’s zebra print coat which was originally white (as seen in Camille) but the production crew later re-coloured using yellow felt-tip pens for Terrorform.
So it’s a (surprisingly) correct image for that episode.

Red Dwarf is now on BritBox in the UK.

V – VII are the series that don’t have any episodes with guidance information of which “adult humour” is one.

Hopefully this’ll be of use to someone. As my own searches couldn’t find an actual list of the UK content I’ve done. Other than my my moving an Only Way is Essex to be the with the rest, it’s mostly in the A-Z order of the site which orders by URL for some reason.

Films are in collections so I just posted them in the order that they were displayed in and removing duplicates.

Basically the BBC hates Christmas, Channel 5 hates peole havng access to full series and ITV loves Hermione Norris:

Wow, that’s a pretty comprehensive selection of content.

Yes, it was after compiling all that that I realised there is nothing there actually for children at all. There might be for the kids who are patient enough with 20th century Doctor Who. *(no Christmas Specials)

    #255735

    Darrell

There’s nothing there for adults either. At least not adults with a collection of more than two DVDs.

I was watching Classic Who reconstructions when I was 12, so that’s not out of the question. I was mainly doing it because I was obsessed with the Cybermen, though. Day of the Daleks bored me to tears at that age and I didn’t make it past the first episode. But then Pertwee Dalek serials could probably be used as punishment for unruly kids – you want to watch Doctor Who? Here you fucking go you little shit.

    #255738

    Darrell

It really is baffling how ritually sacrificed all these shows’ special episodes seem to have been though. Especially as in a great many cases they are vastly important in order to binge these shows in sequence, WHICH IS THE ENTIRE POINT OF THE SERVICE.

The only “important” Christmas specials are The End of Time and Time and the Doctor. Are they really not up there? Most of the other Christmas specials are unimportant and/or not very good. I do like A Christmas Carol, though.

    #255740

    Ridley

Doctor Who’s not on there until Boxing Day and that’s all the available episodes up through 1989.

My *(no Christmas Specials) was supposed in jest. There are holes in several shows on The List though.

Seems like a soft launch anyway since @Britbox_UK has tweeted only once, on launch day, to say they have launched.

You’da thunk they’d time the 30 day free trial to run out closer to the Who launch. I don’t care about soaps but it’s odd that EastEnders or Coronation Street aren’t represented.

    #255741

    Ridley

Hell, it’s not even to say they’ve launched (https://twitter.com/britbox_uk), they’re “streaming soon”!

    #255743

    Darrell

I meant *all* the shows on there, not just DW. Only Fools for example. Without the specials the ongoing story is wrecked. But there are loads of programmes there where major events with consequences happen in the specials, or even, in the case of Vicious, complete the story.

I believe there will be audio/reconstructions for the missing Who episodes, so technically there will be a Christmas Special, unless they omit it for the lolz.

The only “important” Christmas specials are The End of Time and Time and the Doctor. Are they really not up there? Most of the other Christmas specials are unimportant and/or not very good. I do like A Christmas Carol, though.

I think you might be a bit lost without The Christmas Invasion, The Snowmen, and Twice Upon A Time. And The Husbands of River Song is quite important in tying up that character’s story.

A Christmas Carol is the best though, yes.

    • Yes, Minister series 1 – 3 *(No Christmas Special)
    • Yes, Prime Minister series 1 – 2

The lack of Christmas special is pretty fundamental in bridging the two shows. It seems so bizarre to cull the specials.

Maybe classic British kids’ shows are still licensed to Nickelodeon or whoever imports them. Most of my favourite childhood programmes are on there anyway – Red Dwarf, Bottom, etc. Maybe don’t let them watch Cracker though, my dad got in trouble for letting me stay up for that.

I wonder if they’re holding back the Christmas episodes for some sort of big Christmas marketing push.

And The Husbands of River Song is quite important in tying up that character’s story.

    And introducing Nardole.

Similarly, The Runaway Bride introduces Donna, which is very useful in understanding Partners in Crime.

Doesn’t Last Christmas also help bridge Clara’s story between series 8 and 9?

Throw in A Christmas Carol on merit alone and that only precludes only four Who Christmas specials, meaning only four of them are really inessential.

    Yes, true.

If you’re watching new DW in order, you can’t skip *any* specials. They’re all cliffhangered into for a start, but even the ones that don’t have major plot developments or character introductions are either important for character development reasons or are referenced later. Or even just for juxtaposition of tone.

I repeat – surely the sole point of a show being put up for streaming is to be able to watch all the episodes in order? Anything else is stealing pieces out of a jigsaw.

No rescue dogs at Christmas for you, they’re for episodes one and two of a nine episode sixth series.

Well I wasn’t going to sign up to it, but now I know it’s got ‘Martin Clunes: Islands Of Britain’ it’s hard to resist.

Disney+ might have Frozen and every episode of The Simpsons ever made, but does it have episode 2 of The Jumbo Jet: 50 Years In The Sky and no others? I rest my case.

This is going to go even more badly than BBC Store did isn’t it.

BritBox today has added about 66 Christmas Specials along with other shows like Britain ‘s Biggest Mosque.

    Can I claim credit?

    #255900

    Dave

How much of the Mosque did you build?

I must confess to being surprised that Britain’s Biggest Mosque did a Christmas special.

Surely you can’t make much if a series out if Britain’s Biggest Mosque, without delving into a load of auxiliary topics that aren’t just marvelling at how big this Mosque is

What an odd choice, to put all the xmas specials as separate entries. If you’re binging a show you have to stop at the appropriate time, search for the special to watch it, then continue with the rest of the series.

It feels like the people creating britbox have never actually used a streaming service.

    #255944

    Ridley

Be less BritBox, be more BritMosque.

At least the Christmas specials recommend their respective main shows for similar programmes now. Before they were all prioritising the Only Way is Essexmaseseses.
