The fact that they haven’t changed Kochanski age in the new series, bugs me. They allude to the fact that lister is well past his thirties in the mcorp episode, so why couldn’t they have moved her age up too?

Considering we we know the events of Series 5 are about 4 years post accident, Series 6 is 200 years after that (ok we’ll assume parallel dimension KK was in deep sleep too) series 7 takes place over about 18 months (going by pool table caption) and BTE is 9 years after Series 8, Kochanski being 31 by Entangled means she was remarkably young as a Navigation officer and  between that, ball girls and Lolita old Lister should probably be on some sort of register.

Saying Kochanski was 31 in that episode is really mind-boggling. Id like to know what was going through Doug’s head at that time he wrote that in the script. Did he just forget the passage of time? Was he just going by the idea that Lister is an idiot and has no idea how old she is, because that part certainly wouldn’t translate on screen for the audience watching.

It always seemed more “I can’t say she’s 40+, she’s supposed to be sexually desirable!” to me, but maybe I’m being unfair. Maybe he just wanted everyone to seem younger. Series XII embracing ageing was a few years off.

I do prefer Clare’s Kochanski but I’m not sure I could see her as a regular on a series.

Clare Grogan’s appearance in Psirens is covered in Joe Nazzaro’s Comedy, Chaos – and Cowboys! book. From what I can remember she was nervous and struggled a bit with the dialogue, for example pronouncing ‘stasis’ with a short ‘a’.

Here’s my argument: Kochanski was 31 the last time Lister saw her, and he’s assuming she has been in stasis that whole time. This is as good as I can reason it.

But I am way less bothered by that weird line than whatever the fuck Rimmer-wiggling-around-with-a-sound-effect action is going on about 40 seconds later.

I guess, to be fair, that’s how Craig also pronounced it in the original footage of ‘The End’.

But I agree with those saying that Clare was never going to be brought back for VII and it had nothing to do with her age or her being too busy. Craig says himself on one of the DVDs, “I don’t think she was that popular with the writers.”

I think she was perfectly cast in Gregory’s Girl, but you wouldn’t choose her to be a sci-fi hero.
