    Jeez.

Led to the Doug and Rob twitters after reading on Cookd and Bombd of Doug’s ‘There’ll be no more tweeting from the official account’ etc. tweet it led me to dig into Rob’s twitter.

Heck. I think we see what Chris might be like if he had social media rather than just an HTML editor.

The first ‘liked’ tweets I saw were from Martina Navratilova on, of course, trans issues. And then came the Nigel Farage bank account thing.

Cripes, who does he follow to be liking this sort of stuff, I thought…?

His follows list is an odd one. As any fool doth know, Twitter sticks your lists of who you’re following into chronological order of when you started to follow them.

From that we can see Rob’s journey of following RD related accounts and those of other comedians to an account whose profile includes the lovely ‘women don’t have cocks’, then Andrew Doyle, that awful Birbalsingh headteacher, Kemi Badenoch, Spiked, then straight to – one after another – Laurence Fox, the current SDP leader (!), James Dreyfuss, Navratilova, and Farage.

A little while later he starts to follow our own Ian Symes and Jonathan Capps! Possibly after their excellent interview with him a few months back?

Anyway, they say ‘never meet your heroes’. The 2020s version should probably be ‘don’t click on your heroes’ Twitter likes and follows’.

Yes, I probably didn’t need to be so nosey, but what a cess pit.

Maybe he could have chipped in helping Doug with Timewave…

I see Craig and Danny as doing the balancing by genuinely socially conscious. In my opinion, Robert’s liberalism is utterly useless.

I like complaining about liberals and then having to explain that I’m attacking them from the opposite side people assume you are when you complain about liberals in America.

They’re like the ultimate example of gesturing in the direction of the right thing but getting almost nothing useful done.

It seems Rob has updated his likes and follows again, but for the better

Encouraging that he’s at least aware of how bad it looked. Although it feels like we’ve seen too much now…

There are still some right fuckers in these follows, but it’s good so many (including the most egregious of the fascists) are gone. Slightly amusing that around the same period as unfollowing all these accounts, he followed Musk.

    #287675

Hasn’t Musk forced every account to follow him?

If he did it doesn’t matter because I have him either muted or blocked.

Assuming he didn’t undo that which he probably did.

Funny story, he’s been forcing unblocks too.

I remember some people reporting that they’d found themselves following him against their will a while ago, shortly after he first took over, but not recently.

    #287681

Well as batshit mad as Musk is if you want updates on what’s going to happen to the Twitter … sorry X … platform then following him makes sense.

Hell Musk probably has updates on new Red Dwarf.

You don’t need to follow Musk to learn about major Twitter changes, you just need to follow people who talk about them when they happen. Although, I’d happily be ignorant if that’s what it cost to not willingly expose myself to Musk’s tweets, but I’m not Rob I guess.

Still, if you’re going to follow Musk to keep up with whatever today’s nonsensical boy-king proclamation is, you’d think the time to do that would be last year, not now.

Point is I just think we should stop guessing peoples motives for anything based on such mundane occurrences as to who and when someone is followed on a social network.

Maybe the transphobes and fascists we follow are just the friends we made along the way?

But that’s so much more complicated! I’m going to stick to writing off someone’s life’s work based entirely on a button they clicked while online once.

“Hey, I noticed that [celebrity] is following Doug Naylor on Twitter. They must be a Red Dwarf fan!”

“Whoa whoa, slow down there, buddy. They could be following Doug Naylor for LOTS of reasons. Let’s not assume.”

Twitter is a public forum. People with high follow counts Like tweets and they pushed as endorsements into feeds. Transphobia is being trojan horsed into multiple areas of the media and government and it’s easy for people to start down the wrong path (just as Chris had fallen down a conspiracy hole, or many people have fallen to white supremacy ideas) so I really don’t think we should be just treating follows and likes as inconsequential as they demonstrably have an impact, and it’s good to have this stuff openly talked about and challenged.

As a member of the queer community I find it exceptionally more difficult to give someone the benefit of the doubt if they follow accounts arguing to genocide people I care about. That’s a tad beyond “following across the political spectrum” in my book. I’m giving Rob the benefit of the doubt only because he retracted all those follows instead of doubling down but I’m still wary.

Back in the good old pre Trump days when these people were mostly derided as the conspiratorial nutters they are, you could maybe follow a Tory/Republican politician as a Lefty/Democrat to see their points as they were still somewhat sensible and did their jobs mostly. They might say that Labours taxation plans were too high, and they’d scrap a tax, or they’d say they’d spend a bit more of defence or whatever.

Now you can’t even follow the Prime Minister and Home Secretary without seeing some EDL esque shit, and republicans are calling for people they don’t like to be eradicated and would rather people die rather than let them have choice over their own body.

Social media isn’t your tea when your 6, no-one is forcing you to ingest things you don’t like, so if you’re liking hateful shit then it’s fair game for everyone to assume it’s because you agree with it, otherwise why would you like it? I don’t like things that I don’t agree with or that make me angry. I think that’s pretty normal behaviour personally.

Hi, I’m Moonlight’s best friend and one of those bolshevik socialist trans girls you’ve all heard so much about. I rarely ever post here or anywhere, on account of crippling social anxiety (the last time here was probably in 2017). But I’m always around and I just saw this thread and wanted to chime in and say this has all been incredibly weird, disturbing and sad.

But mainly I wanted to echo Asclepius’ comments that you’re all a fucking great bunch of cunts. You really are. I mean, honestly, you are lovely guys. Your dwarfcasts have really helped me get through some tough times. The Smegazine and Re-disc-overy episodes have been some of the best material you’ve ever made. And your creation of the smegadrive leading to incessant meme threads popping up (or just turning otherwise miserable threads, such as this one, into incessant meme threads) has consantly filled me with belly aching laughter. Truly a boon to the community. Keep on being wonderful cunts!

How about a wholesome thread called “Craig Charles has updated his funk stack” where we just chronicle his favourite records from his radio show.

Would be a pleasant change of pace from the three flavours of radged Barrie, Llewellyn, and Grant are serving up.

“Danny has posted another tweet I don’t understand”.

I normally get them on their second or third read, but very rarely the first. He’s got a lot of things that (rightly) rile him, and isn’t afraid of firing them out onto his platform. I like his style, but wouldn’t want to get on the wrong side of him!
