As we’ve now had 2 weeks of the Difficult Daily, I thought it might be prudent to move discussions of the day’s puzzle and our scores to a dedicated thread, so we’re not just bloating the comments of the “Reintroducing Smegle” post all the time. Let that be for more general feedback (or bug reports).

And of course, if you get any share-worthy frames in Casual Continuous, feel free to post those here too!

Somewhat tricky, but once I’d got the right series I felt confident I could narrow it down enough not to fail.

Also, what do you think: should this thread be spoiler-free, or not? I’m leaning towards not – because I generally prefer to do the Difficult Daily myself before hearing about others’ scores anyway, and it would be cool to speak openly without having to wait until the next day – but only if there’s consensus on it.

This took me an embarrassingly long time as I had convinced myself it was from the “you’re going to put these cigarettes back, aren’t you” scene and kept thinking I was somehow guessing the wrong episode for that.

Is that square thing on the floor the cover from the hatch he jumps out of? I went for Waiting for God, thinking of Lister knocking out the panel and falling when he’s looking for the Cat, and then Balance of Power for some reason. Poor show.

Yep. And that’s exactly how I got it in one. It seems most people went based on the blurred colours rather than what’s clear in the first square.

It’s an exciting one for fans of glitches though – when I clicked “share your result” inexplicably this appeared:

First thought was those panels with knobs were Blue Midgets cockpit from Thanks for the Memory. Rimmer’s face pushed me towards the right series and then instinct rather than any actual knowing nudged me towards the right answer.

Initially thought the background was where they meet Snacky and almost wrote Give & Take as a first guess but the aspect ratio told me different. So I guessed Justice thinking it might be background detail in the facility, then guessed Holoship second before realising which scene it came from.

Rimmer goes serif when the show title does. It wasn’t really clear in the image though, my second guess was Justice thinking maybe he was in his prison garb, there was a pale blue blob somewhere.

Initial guess was that it looked a bit film effect-y, then from what was available it seemed like Starbug in Series V and got lucky.

More or less narrowed it down to 3 based on the lighting, but even though my brain knows that all options were equally likely, my heart didn’t expect the repeat.

BUG UPDATE: The wrong result in the share pop up happened again (the same one, from the 17th), but after a manual refresh it displayed today’s result as it should.

I’ve restarted my phone and Chrome multiple times since then, but possibly May 17th was the last time I refreshed the Smegle tab manually. Maybe it still had the share display from that day cached, and getting a loss instead of a win caused it to start showing me the oldest result rather than the newest one?

Actually, thinking about it some more, I must have tried refreshing yesterday too when it went weird – so refreshing fixes it, but only on victory days? lol, I should stop trying to guess.

I’m now very curious about what will happen if (… OK, when) I next lose a Daily, but my ego will not let me lose deliberately.

I can’t see how that first square is anything to do with Lister even after seeing the full picture. 

It doesn’t help its from a very quick shot that cut from the end of a scene that because Robert couldn’t get his lines out. 

Also wasn’t expecting Inquisitor again so soon. So jumped all around the houses until I finally settled on trying it.

Same. Guessed D.N.A (“running away from a psychopathic curry maaaan!”) but I think the lighting never actually gets that red.

Same. Was the blue in the first square just some smoke or what? I thought it was something much more solid, possibly a skutter at first.

Thanks for the QA update! That’s actually very helpful.

And since the screens were generated randomly there’s every chance you get the same episode very close together so don’t get bogged down in that thought process. We only manually intervene if a screenshot is rubbish.

That was my second guess, after the haywire skutter at the beginning of Bodyswap and before the big red fan in Tikka.

It wasn’t drenched in blue, so I just picked something else and there turned out to be an image from Red Dwarf in there.

Always go for TPL when it’s a 16:9 one I don’t instantly recognise, simply because it’s three times more likely to be that than any other given episode.
