Their account is suspended on X and no recent posts I can see on other social media. No emails/updates from the club and no upcoming dimension jump. Probably shouldn’t have paid my membership recently lol. I know they are all volunteers so don’t want to give anyone a hard time but if they have closed down it would be good to know. Apologies if I have missed any recent social media updates. June 12, 2024 at 1:56 pm #295799 Jonathan CappsKeymaster I hate to say this, but setting aside all my previous association with the club and friendship with those currently in it, I recommend you ask for a refund and cancel your membership until signs of life starts to show. June 12, 2024 at 7:36 pm #295802 Flap JackParticipant Well that’s a shame to hear. Given that it is the Official Red Dwarf Fan Club, maybe they’re just trying to keep their level of follower engagement in line with GNP’s. June 12, 2024 at 8:47 pm #295805 Stephen R. FletcherParticipant For the last couple years, I kept worrying since the last Dimension Jump if or when the next one would be announced – just because I’ve kept failing so miserably at saving the monies. Actually didn’t realize it’s been quiet all round. Really sad to hear this. All the previous DJ’s have been excellent and I had been hoping to head over for another one soon. Ive tried emailing them directly without much response but to be honest I’m not bothered about the membership fee just would love to see things start up again. Really don’t want to give them a hard time, i’m sure they have their reasons and they are volunteers but would be great to see some action. It’s never too late for the old team members to get back involved…….(if any see this post). June 13, 2024 at 11:29 am #295811 Ian SymesKeymaster Latest Psi-Scan newsletter: May 2022 Latest Dimension Jump: September 2021 Latest magazine: May 2019 It’s really sad to see it just fizzle out like this. If it was an entirely free service, that’d be one thing, but people are giving them money and it’s been over five years since the last time they delivered their core product. June 13, 2024 at 12:40 pm #295812 JenuallParticipant Oh man, I hadn’t realised it was quite that bad. That is a really sad state of affairs June 13, 2024 at 12:53 pm #295813 WarbodogParticipant Come to think of it, I haven’t heard much from the Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles Fan Club since about 1991. June 13, 2024 at 12:58 pm #295814 Flap JackParticipant Yeah, £15 per year isn’t a bad price for a fan club membership, but that’s only if the club is actually active. Depressingly their homepage still describes the 2021 Dimension Jump as a future event, so even before all activity ceased they weren’t exactly staying on top of things. Whatever circumstances lead to this, just letting the memberships tick over amid years of radio silence is really not defensible. June 13, 2024 at 2:00 pm #295815 UnrumbleParticipant June 13, 2024 at 3:20 pm #295822 loadoftottnumbParticipant They were always a bit of a funny bunch the fan club. They always seemed absolutely furious when people would ask them questions about DJ or anything else fan club related. I guess if it was volunteer work it was probably an inconvenience but they did seem slightly confrontational at times. June 13, 2024 at 4:46 pm #295827 JoParticipant It’s never too late for the old team members to get back involved…….(if any see this post). 😂😂😂😂😂😂 Thank you, I needed that! Also, that’s a HARD no from me. I put 11+yrs of my life into that club, I worked bloody hard and honestly it absolutely breaks my heart (and pisses me right off) to see the current state of it. If I was still on the team now, I would absolutely expect a hard time for the lack of… well, anything. Volunteers or not, people still pay their hard-earned money. My mindset was always, yes we’re volunteers but that doesn’t mean we can’t be professional. They were always a bit of a funny bunch the fan club. They always seemed absolutely furious when people would ask them questions about DJ or anything else fan club related. I guess if it was volunteer work it was probably an inconvenience but they did seem slightly confrontational at times. 🙄 And thank you for being the perfect example of why you’d never get me back on the team. As the person who dealt with our social media channels and organised DJ until almost exactly 5yrs ago, I can confirm that I was never “furious” when people asked me questions. Did I get frustrated at answering the same question 20 times when the answer was in multiple emails, on the website and the 19 responses prior to that one? Sure, but unless someone was being an actual AH, the response was either the information requested or pointing them to the information requested. It’s weird when people assume tone where there is none. 🤷🏻♀️ June 13, 2024 at 5:32 pm #295830 loadoftottnumbParticipant Ok June 13, 2024 at 6:57 pm #295832 PodeyParticipant It’s weird when people assume tone where there is none. 🤷🏻♀️ Ok June 13, 2024 at 8:47 pm #295833 Quinn: Clochebusters World ChampionParticipant > Sure, but unless someone was being an actual AH Ainsley Harriott? June 13, 2024 at 9:30 pm #295836 Future Producer of Series IX – aaaaany day nowParticipant No, it’s obviously me. June 13, 2024 at 10:23 pm #295837 paulfParticipant It’s never too late for the old team members to get back involved…….(if any see this post). 😂😂😂😂😂😂 Thank you, I needed that! Also, that’s a HARD no from me. It was worth a try Jo! (Sorry it was fairly obvious who I was directing that plea to lol). The reason I’m trying to tread lightly when raising this is I’ve had such great experiences with literally every member of the TORDFC team I’ve dealt with over the years. Every annoying question Ive asked/email I’ve sent (and there were a few!) was dealt with really well. Hopefully things will pick up again. June 26, 2024 at 7:12 pm #296101 RudolphParticipant I’d be curious to the state of various sci-fi/fantasy fan clubs in the age of the Internet. The Doctor Who Appreciation Society is alive and thriving, and so is oddly ZZ9 Plural Z Alpha, despite their main content provider having been dead for almost twenty-five years. June 26, 2024 at 8:12 pm #296103 DaveParticipant Death isn’t the handicap it used to be in the olden days etc. June 26, 2024 at 10:14 pm #296106 WarbodogParticipant The Doctor Who Appreciation Society is alive and thriving Just got a 27-year-old reference of the Doctor Robotnik Appreciation Tribe in Sonic the Comic. June 27, 2024 at 4:11 am #296109 GlenTokyoParticipant What’s really annoying about all this is that every official Red Dwarf social media account and website has gone. If TORDFC wound down but we still had TOS and TOS twitter, it’d be sad but a volunteer run thing with a tight budget, it wouldn’t be surprising (although it sort of would because of the extreme lean Red Dwarf times TORDFC survived and thrived in), as it is though, Doug is the official site and he seems to be having an uncharacteristically quiet period too. June 27, 2024 at 10:16 am #296124 Ian SymesKeymaster What’s really annoying about all this is that every official Red Dwarf social media account and website has gone. We never knew how good we had it – weekly updates, by a succession of brilliant writers. The situation we find ourselves in now with the lack of official voices is extremely disappointing, but I think if it had always been this way, it’d feel much more acceptable. It’s a very very narrow band of TV shows that have the interest to sustain year-round coverage, even on social media. Gone are the days where every single show had its own social accounts, it’s extremely rare that even the biggest new shows will get them now, you only see dedicated profiles for shows that have been going for years. It’s right and fair to be disappointed with what we currently have, but it’s also fair to note that we were overserved for years prior to this. If TORDFC wound down but we still had TOS and TOS twitter, it’d be sad but a volunteer run thing with a tight budget, it wouldn’t be surprising (although it sort of would because of the extreme lean Red Dwarf times TORDFC survived and thrived in) The only difference between then-TORDFC and now-TORDFC being the personnel. A huge swathe of people left after DJXX in 2018, and a bunch more left after the latest DJ in 2021. I don’t blame the new recruits that have joined since, but there’s nobody there with the experience and the enthusiasm to lead them and make sure things are happening. Note that this is the case despite the actual chairperson not having changed. July 8, 2024 at 2:46 am #296474 paulfParticipant For anyone who is interested, I have sent off an email checking in on the current state of TORDFC and will post here if I hear back. I would much appreciate any updates if anyone hears anything. July 8, 2024 at 9:25 am #296482 Jonathan CappsKeymaster July 9, 2024 at 7:15 pm #296546 DibbleySmegHeadParticipant Would be interested to see if there are any plans for the fan club and more so DJ. I spent half an hour on the Goog trying to find info on… anything (after seeing the DJ website dormant). Is there a group of people still receiving membership money or has that stopped, too? July 10, 2024 at 9:54 am #296568 Ian SymesKeymaster The facility to receive people’s money is just about the only thing still going. July 10, 2024 at 11:00 am #296570 DibbleySmegHeadParticipant The facility to receive people’s money is just about the only thing still going. July 11, 2024 at 12:23 am #296619 TechnopeasantParticipant Has anyone asked the Duke of Manchester? October 10, 2024 at 11:28 am #298901 paulfParticipant There appears to be some life in TORDFC yet! A retweet of a Doug Naylor tweet on X today. Really hope it’s a sign of things to come. Would love another DJ!
