May 6, 2009 at 10:38 pm #98562 ChrisMParticipant >A drained white body hanging from the gallows is more righteous than Hindley?s crotchet lectures. It’s weird but as I write this I have Dracula Prince of Darkness on in the background (although I’m not paying much attention.) Just as I read that post we’re up to a bit in the film where Dracula’s henchman has hung a guy over Dracula’s coffin and he has cut his throat spewing blood onto the dust of Dracula-that-was. He regenerated while I typed that. Don’t mind me, I’m easily fascinated by the little coincidences of life. Oh ooh. Christopher Lee looks like he’s been hitting the sauce the previous night… (His eyes are all blood-shot.) May 6, 2009 at 10:40 pm #98564 JamesTCParticipant >He regenerated while I typed that. Matt Smith!!! May 7, 2009 at 12:24 am #98572 pfmParticipant Talking of him, I’m still not entirely sure why Moffat was so immediately certain he was right for the role. He said they were an hour into the first auditions and there was the 11th Doctor standing in front of them, without a doubt. ‘Patrick Moore as an underwear model’ or something, that’s how he described him. Matt Smith doesn’t scream ‘Doctor’ to me, not in anything I’ve seen him in (Ruby in the Smoke, Moses Jones). He’s just a bit weird… That’s it. Going off Moffat’s comments I wonder whether he’s gonna put on a full blown character as opposed to just playing it as himself. What I find interesting about Tennant’s portrayal is how you think he’s doing the Doctor as this big 100mph shouty, blustery character when in fact that’s the Doctor himself putting on all that bravado. It’s sort of a character playing a character. May 7, 2009 at 6:29 am #98579 JamesTCParticipant > He?s just a bit weird? That?s it. Well I would say Tom Baker was too. I mean I look forward to seeing Matt as the good Doctor unlike the legions of people blaming the BBC for his casting and saying Moffat is a BBC puppet, one thing I don’t understand with all these people is that they have not seen a single frame of him as the Doctor. Anyway I have never seen Star Gate so I will just go and watch an interview to see what it is like. May 7, 2009 at 8:33 am #98581 Jonathan CappsKeymaster > Matt Smith doesn?t scream ?Doctor? to me, not in anything I?ve seen him in (Ruby in the Smoke, Moses Jones). Considering Moffat’s actually seen him play the Doctor and you haven’t this isn’t that big a surprise. Although, after watching him in Party Animals and a bit in Moses Jones I can see him as the Doctor very clearly. The more I think about it, the more I’m delighted with the casting. Speaking of which, they’ll be starting to film soon. Costume pictures! May 7, 2009 at 10:13 am #98587 Ben PaddonParticipant David Tennant never screamed “Doctor” to me. Nor did Christopher Eccleston. Nor, really, did Paul McGann. But all three exceeded my expectations (and while the Eighth Doctor movie was shit, you can’t fault McGann’s performance). Anyway, what I really wanted to say was this: This is the first time I’ve come into the “TWATS” thread, and the Chloe Annett header image has appeared. I can only wonder if this is intentional. May 7, 2009 at 1:23 pm #98603 JamesTCParticipant >David Tennant never screamed ?Doctor? to me. I had the great thing of not knowing who was Doctor 10 before ‘Parting of the Ways’ aired, I really only watched the classic series up until the end of Series 1 when I caught the end of ‘Fathers Day’. When it came to the regeneration I didn’t know it was happening and who popped on screen? It was bloody casanova. May 7, 2009 at 9:06 pm #98614 pfmParticipant For me Eccleston was immediately the Doctor (the first 8 minutes of ‘Rose’ being IMO perfect television does help his intro). This was first solidified to the nth degree when Rose first enters the Tardis. The way he is in that scene is so perfect it’s untrue – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AfES-72u324 ‘Are you alien?’ ‘Yes. Is that alright?’ ‘Yeah.’ is one of my favourite little exchanges ever. Billie was so good here too. Ah the good old days… May 7, 2009 at 10:08 pm #98617 Seb PatrickKeymaster >David Tennant never screamed ?Doctor? to me. See, you should have bought him dinner first. May 7, 2009 at 11:01 pm #98622 Ben PaddonParticipant That’s such hard work. May 7, 2009 at 11:30 pm #98625 ChrisMParticipant Having just seen William Hartnell in The Web Planet (ok, it’s not the first time I’ve seen him, I saw him in the first Dalek to) he is quite different to any of the other Doctors I’ve seen (which granted, apart from the new era Doctors is just the odd episode here and there.) Who would thing Doctor 1 and Tenants Doctor (10 or 11, whatever) were the same character? (Ok, in a sense they’re not with the old regen thing.) They all have two things in common though. They’re intelligent, and they’re a bit* odd. With the possible exception of Pertwee’s version who seems more of a dapper refined Victorian gentleman to me. It could be argued that’s a bit odd in itself (taking into account his dress sense too) so it still works in it’s own way. As long as Matt Smith can act well and depict that sense of intelligence coupled with alien-oddness he’s in for a good chance I reckon. He’ll be different, but then they all are anyway. *’Bit’ varying from little to big depending on particular incarnation. May 8, 2009 at 7:41 am #98640 DaveParticipant >Who would thing Doctor 1 and Tenants Doctor (10 or 11, whatever) were the same character? That was one of the things I think Time Crash addressed really nicely: “You know… I loved being you. Back when I first started, at the very beginning, I was always trying to be old and grumpy and important, like you do when you’re young. And then I was you, and it was all dashing about and playing cricket and my voice going all squeaky when I shouted. I still do that! The voice thing, I got that from you. Oh! and the trainers and (dons specs) snap. ‘Cause you know what, Doctor? You were my Doctor.” The Two Doctors presents the two Doctors on a fairly equal footing, but in The Three & Five Doctors the elder Doctors defer to the First and therefore youngest to defeat their enemy. Which is odd. May 8, 2009 at 8:51 am #98641 Seb PatrickKeymaster >That was one of the things I think Time Crash addressed really nicely: Awww, you’ve made me want to watch it again, now. May 8, 2009 at 11:22 am #98646 siParticipant In the recent Doctor Who Magazine 200 story poll thing, Time Crash was one of only about five stories (of all the ‘proper’ ones, as well as the spin offs) I gave a full 10/10 to. It’s a beautiful, wonderful thing. May 8, 2009 at 12:57 pm #98655 JamesTCParticipant If ‘The Tomb of the Cybermen’ is not in the top 10 of that DWM poll I will burn the issue. May 8, 2009 at 1:53 pm #98656 DaveParticipant >If ?The Tomb of the Cybermen? is not in the top 10 of that DWM poll I will burn the issue. I was going to post something to the effect that it’s not fair that we are discussing David Tennant, Matt Smith & Steven Moffatt in a thread entitled Twats. And then you brought us right back on topic… May 8, 2009 at 1:58 pm #98657 JamesTCParticipant I won’t actually burn it, I will be dissapointed if it isn’t in the top 10. It is an hour and a half of the best television ever, stories like ‘Blink’ and ‘Genesis of the Daleks’ will be right up there, ‘The Tomb of the Cybermen’ is a little more eratic, not always appearing in the top 10 polls. May 8, 2009 at 3:35 pm #98663 pfmParticipant Blink is fucking overrated. ‘Ooh don’t blink!’ Crap. May 8, 2009 at 3:39 pm #98664 JamesTCParticipant I agree! I was just pointing out the two stories that would probably take the top spot. May 8, 2009 at 5:13 pm #98666 Pete Part ThreeParticipant Yeah. It was shit. Oh wait. It was the best piece of television in about ten years. That was it. May 8, 2009 at 8:12 pm #98670 JamesTCParticipant I found it to be the weakest of the Moffat stories in the new series, I include ‘Time Crash’ in that. The main thing about it that I just didn’t like were the statues, I mean you look at them and they stop? But I have already disucssed this before, now if it was ‘Wink’ it would make a bit more sense, “Don’t Wink, Wink and you’re dead”. May 8, 2009 at 10:22 pm #98674 Pete Part ThreeParticipant Yeah, unfortunately winking isn’t at all involuntary. “Don’t wank, wank and you’re dead” would make more sense. May 8, 2009 at 11:07 pm #98675 JamesTCParticipant >?Don?t wank, wank and you?re dead? would make more sense. Torchwood plot! May 9, 2009 at 12:57 am #98677 pfmParticipant It’s actually quite funny to think of replacing every instance of the word ‘blink’ in the episode with ‘wank’. FFS I do love Blink, I’m just sick of how often it’s used as the poster child for why new Who isn’t shit at every turn. Er… I mean the poster child for why Moffat is a god in human form, despite only having around 4 hours of decent television to his name (the first Murder Most Horrid he did, episode 2 of Jekyll, The Doctor Dances, TGITFP and Blink). ‘*Wah* but what about Coupling *wah* and Joking A*wah*part *wahwah*??’ Oh your programmes, your programmes. May 9, 2009 at 9:11 am #98679 Seb PatrickKeymaster Coupling was great, Joking Apart… inconsistent. I don’t think I’ve seen anything from Moffat that would qualify him as “god in human form” that wasn’t a Who episode, but… blimey, aren’t the Who episodes enough? May 9, 2009 at 10:09 am #98680 Ben PaddonParticipant Performingmonkey, you are a jerk. A total knee-biter. May 9, 2009 at 5:42 pm #98688 siParticipant I’ve just watched my new The Deadly Assassin DVD. My God, that was a good story. May 9, 2009 at 7:25 pm #98690 JamesTCParticipant Wah, I wait until the monday to get it, the best Who writer with one of his best stories, wonderful. I hear the extras are good too. May 9, 2009 at 7:26 pm #98691 siParticipant Not bad, tho I don’t reckon much to ‘The Gallifreyan Candidate’. May 9, 2009 at 7:32 pm #98692 CarlitoParticipant Re: Moffat. I, for one, enjoyed Chalk. I’ll get me coat… May 9, 2009 at 7:43 pm #98693 Seb PatrickKeymaster >I?ve just watched my new The Deadly Assassin DVD. My God, that was a good story. Awful title, though. May 9, 2009 at 8:37 pm #98694 Ian SymesKeymaster It should be called The Competent Assassin. May 9, 2009 at 8:56 pm #98695 siParticipant Although you’ve got to love this screenshot: http://i625.photobucket.com/albums/tt340/skbromley/stuff/presidentialchalkmalk.jpg?t=1241902415 May 9, 2009 at 9:24 pm #98697 pfmParticipant Moffat will never achieve the greatness of Assassin, Genesis, Fear, Talons, Robots, Horror, City etc. But bananas are good so we must all bow down. He even had to have his Tintin screenplay sorted out by Edgar Wright and Joe off of Adama and Joe FFS. We’re in for a rude awakening next April. May 9, 2009 at 9:26 pm #98698 JawscvmcdiaParticipant I’m rather startled of how a topic I made when I was frustrated became to this. May 9, 2009 at 9:27 pm #98699 JamesTCParticipant What’s wrong with Joe Cornish? Stephen!!! May 9, 2009 at 9:29 pm #98700 JamesTCParticipant Oh and running a show and writing for a show are two different things, I have no point here actually, just that, erm, we can’t know if he will be good or bad I guess. May 9, 2009 at 9:44 pm #98703 pfmParticipant > we can?t know if he will be good or bad I guess No, we can’t. All I know is that Jekyll was only half good, and that’s kind of the closest job to Who showrunner he’s had so far. May 9, 2009 at 11:07 pm #98708 Ben PaddonParticipant Y’know who’s a big bunch of twats? Every fucker who didn’t pull over to help me out last night when my bike crapped out on me, leaving me to spend three fucking hours walking from North Hollywood to Sunland. Dicks. May 9, 2009 at 11:25 pm #98710 ChrisMParticipant >All I know is that Jekyll was only half good, I liked Jekyll overall. The only thing I disliked was the explanation of the present day Hyde’s origins. May 10, 2009 at 12:15 pm #98723 Ian SymesKeymaster Stephen!!! Just coming! May 10, 2009 at 12:38 pm #98724 JamesTCParticipant I feel proud, first “Just coming” I have got. May 10, 2009 at 1:15 pm #98725 AndrewParticipant > I feel proud, first ?Just coming? I have got. May 10, 2009 at 9:22 pm #98748 siParticipant The kids are all right, but only when they’re completely wrong. May 11, 2009 at 3:15 pm #98776 JamesTCParticipant >>I?ve just watched my new The Deadly Assassin DVD. My God, that was a good story. >Awful title, though. >It should be called The Competent Assassin.
