The Dave era of Red Dwarf is over.
The channel is rebranding as U&Dave.
Due to UKTV rebranding all their channels to be like that such as U&Drama etc etc.

So Cher is now a cannon hologram in the Red Dwarf universe.

Yes, and she looks like a Star Wars hologram for some reason.

“No, I refused the settlement and opted for Chers.”

Plural. Because just one is not enough.

Is it Chers or Cheri though?

Chers, ‘i’ s only used for a plural for words ending in ‘us’.

I can’t remember when and where it was last discussed on here, but I made a rare visit to U today, and not only was I shocked to see that Series XI and Series XII are still missing, but I realised that the clip of Red Dwarf used in the “I Got U Babe” promo was from M-Corp.

So just 8 months into the rebrand, you can’t even watch all of the things in the U launch trailer on U.

This is sort of redundant in a world where Red Dwarf is available more or less for free on iPlayer however the general sentiment stands …

it is incredibly ironic that the rules that exist to ensure content owners and landlords (streaming services) get paid basically push people to piracy as it’s a solution with far less friction

Further ironically streaming rose to prominence because it was far easier and more convenient than piracy

The mistake is people assuming streaming replaces physical releases. It doesn’t. It just replaces television.

I have been signed up to Britbox Canada for three years and it is wild my access to Red Dwarf has been more consistent than in the UK.

I ripped all my DVDs and put them on Plex, then I tracked down ISOs of the PAL versions, ripped those and put them on Plex instead. Which is a level of commitment nobody can reasonably be expected to have.

Honestly I don’t expect streaming services to be dependable in general, but even in the context of streaming, losing access to one of their most popular pieces of original programming that they actively used to promote the service after less than a year is pretty standout. Imagine logging onto Netflix right now and seeing that the only Stranger Things they had was Seasons 2 and 3.

I guess given the iPlayer availability it’s a net good that we can only watch like 32% of Dave Dwarf on U but we can watch nearly 100% of The Bill there. Still strange.

As an aside, I had a fun time trying to use YouTube search to find the U channel yesterday, and it was impressively difficult. “U”? Of course not. “U TV”? Still no. “U streaming”? Nope. Eventually “U UKTV” found it, which sure makes a mockery of the rebrand. “Stream on U” also works, because that’s the channel’s social handle, but you’d need to know that first.

I originally signed up to Netflix to watch Marvel’s Daredevil TV series, so…

Just to be clear, digital downloads are probably better than physical discs, given disc rot, but that doesn’t seem popular for films for some reason.
