Right, apologies if someone has already satisfactorily answered this elsewhere….

So, it was an “Elation” Squid in BtE, right? So, just as the despair squid plunged each crew member into their own personal hell, so this squid should have brought about hallucinations of their ideal state of being.

I can understand Lister – he was given a reason to live in discovering that he could get back to Earth, where he could live happily with Kochanski if he so wished.

Rimmer’s ultimate pleasure seems to be in discovering that he doesn’t exist. Fair enough.

But what about the Cat and Kryten? The cat in particular bothers me – quite the opposite to Rimmer’s reaction, he is completely distraught at the thought that he doesn’t exist.

So where was their fantasy / elation?

Sorry to bring back an old topic, but I’ve just remembered something that could easily explain this problem – Rimmer’s diseased mind affected Better Than Life, perhaps it did the same here to cancel out the elation?

Well if Ben says it then clearly all internet speculation must now HALT and we should all start talking sense.

Or on the other hand: maybe the Cat found it in a tiny stasis tube onboard the SSS Esperanto as a specimen, along with a variety of other fish. His plan was to create an entire larder of little fishies.

The stasis tube was then placed in Starbug during the events of Prelude and Series VI/ VII, still in their small specimen collecting stasis tube.

Sometime after the crash but before they are all sentenced to the tank, the Cat upended the contents into the water tank on G-Deck. We’ve seen that he used to explore the cargo decks via the service ducts so there’s no reason he couldn’t slip off Hollister and Holly’s radar and vanish for a bit sometime during Lister and Rimmer’s bunkscenes.

Being genetically modified they had no problem adapting to the saline free water. Everything in the water thrived by eating everything else. The Joy Squid was eventually the last thing alive.

I’d like to see a Ben Paddon Red Dwarf script. Have you written any that you’d care to share? (Don’t worry I won’t laugh. No wait… that would be bad. OK. I will laugh. Promise. No that’s bad too…)

To be honest I’d like to see a J script, but that’s never going to happen. My attention span is to sh- ooh look a butterfly.

Actually, I recently finished off a Red Dwarf script. I wrote it for Kris, and once I finished the first draft we worked between us to get it flowing nicely as an eight-page comic. I can’t remember Kris’ timeframe for getting the comic done, but if I had to guess I think we’ll see the finished product in July/August some time.

It’s my personal hope that it finds its way into the fanzine.
