Your Unpopular Red Dwarf Opinions

The title says it all. What opinions do you have about Red Dwarf that no-one else seems to agree on?

For me, it’s that VIII is my second favourite series (behind V) and that I prefer Chloë over Claire as Kochanski (this may be partially influenced by the fact that I’ve met Chloë).

And please, no arguing.

Until today, to see what you guys were talking about. I guess you’re talking about the Cotton Eye Joe harmonica tribute music? I… don’t hate it… it’s only 4691 on the list of things wrong with that episode, but it sure doesn’t belong in Dwarf.

Actually I might be in the minority because everyone loves it, but Lost in Space by Nigel Bates never sounded that Dwarfy to me either. I don’t dislike it, it’s a nice ethereal piece but Goodall did a score with a proper motif for Ouroboros that would’ve been so much better.

The music that plays when Lister is removing Kryten’s inhibitor chip in Tikka is absolutely fucking everywhere. I’ve heard it from Spongebob to a visitors video at the Stade de France.

20th Century Gothic. I actually quite like that one, when I was growing up I assumed Goodall did it alongside the JFK assassination music, so when I put on the music cues on the Series VII DVD I was a bit disappointed to find it wasn’t included.

I think having Ace and Duane in Emohawk is fine for the story and more than just fan service. We never got to see the real Duane in Back To Reality (he was Cat in Duane’s body), so seeing how he’d actually act and speak is funny, and we never got to see Ace in an actual adventure/action situation in Dimension Jump either. It’s after that they got gratuitous (series 7 and 8), but their appearances in Emohawk were fine. (and probably would have been remembered as fine if both characters never came back)
