A magazine poll and the 2009 calendar, of course!

Well, if you were hoping today’s TOS update was going to shed a little light on this week’s exciting news coming from the lips and chin of Robert Llewellyn then you wont be alone in feeling a little in the dark today. We’ve got just the one update to digest, and that’s the news that Red Dwarf has come joint second in a Radio Times poll asking readers which shows they would like to made in to a film. However, there are some small nuggets to take from this: the Red Dwarf TV special *is* mentioned here, meaning this is, of sorts, our first confirmation from GNP. Also, has anyone else seen that Movie flyer before? I’ve certainly not seen a version with such a clear view of the Agonoid… er, sorry, I mean ‘Sapienoid’.

Second up, the most rad Rad, has spotted that buytheprint.com have stuck up the cover of the 2009 calendar and made it available to preorder. Blimey that’s hot. The cover is, of course, a lovely adaptation of Stephen Hawkin’s A Brief History of Time, but what does this mean for the actual content of the calendar? A run down of the various space phenomena in the Dwarf Universe? Or will be what it says on the tin; a brief history of Red Dwarf itself to tie in with the possible ‘clip show’ aspect of whatever the hell this TV special is going to be? I guess we’ll see, but it’s looking very promising, never-the-less.

That’s it for now, but I’m sure there’ll be something much bigger to be reporting on soon, so KEEP IT G&T. Thanks.

  • I hope that’s not the final art. I get the concept of it being a parody of the Hawking cover, but it looks a little… amateurish. I think it’d be fine if it wasn’t for the red text on the left. Red on grey looks bad, as does the font. And “calendar” shouldn’t be capitalised, but that’s nitpicking.

“Through Wormholes & Stargates” is a bloody excellent strapline, though.

  • Well, if red on grey was good enough for the book, it’s good enough for this. A bit more faithfulness in the fonts would help, but I still think it looks lovely and is a very successful parody of the original.

  • Yeah, it’s not even so much the colour scheme, it’s that the font and the unnecessary capitalisation make it look a bit amateurish. The black text, in that classic Dwarfy font, works quite well.

  • Aaah, I see why you had issues with it, now. It’s strange, though, as I consider the current paperback to be by far the most iconic out of the two.

  • I’ve only ever seen the paperback version.

Shame there’s no news of the special on the main site. The distribution of information is all very odd.

  • The ship breaking in two could have been fucking amazing to see!

It’s always nice to see there are still loads of people out there waiting for new Red Dwarf, whether it’s a movie, TV or whatever. It’s such a shame the potential movie financiers didn’t go for it. I’m sure they would have been very happy with the result.

  • I’m afeared that the only way new Dwarf could be truly great would be if Grant Naylor reformed.

  • I hope they both return after the brief writing stint on BodySnatcher, that little reunion should have created a spark in the team surely. I think Rob will return, fingers crossed.

  • > The back cover of the calendar shows what the calendar pages will be – image montages.

Ah, yes! Me not paying attention, there.

  • From TOS:

The only other non-Who British entry on the list was, coincidentally, also the only other show not currently in production – Patrick McGoohan’s classic The Prisoner

Is Friends currently in production? Or am I misreading that sentence?

  • Bah – ‘currently’ should have been ‘recently’. Stupid mistake. Prisoner one’s a judgement call…especially since I mentioned it’s production in the next line. But yeah, not great – despite meaning the 60s series.

Would the “I’ve been working on another story that kinda distracted me” excuse carry any weight?!

  • >Would the ?I?ve been working on another story that kinda distracted me? excuse carry any weight?!

    OoooOOOOoooh! You little tease!

  • >Would the ?I?ve been working on another story that kinda distracted me? excuse carry any weight?!

Not until we see it, no ;-)

  • The end to the classic Prisoner was complete genius, Fall out I think the last episode was called. Very original.

  • >Bah – ?currently? should have been ?recently?.

Ahhh, gotcha. I had no idea if they had a special in the works or something.

  • >The end to the classic Prisoner was complete genius, Fall out I think the last episode was called. Very original.

I’m afraid I’m in the group that think it’s fucking atrocious. I don’t mind the ideas, but the execution is just…odd. I realise that The Prisoner was always surreal, but compared to the sheer sublime brilliance of The Schizoid Man, Fall Out just seems like a big old mess.

I always liked Schizoid Man, also Many Happy Returns was one of my favourite, even though it wasn’t a heavily surreal episode. Hammer into Anvil was brilliant, I liked how Number 6 literally drove that particular Number 2 into total fanatism.

  • This years calendar looks pretty dann good. though if it’s one series per month, what happens when we reach September? will we then get montages from the Deleted scenes and Smeg ups? The movie flyer (or is it a poster?) is great, it works better with out the red boarder.

  • >I hope they both return after the brief writing stint on BodySnatcher, that little reunion should have created a spark in the team surely. I think Rob will return, fingers crossed.

That’s been my dream scenario ever since BodySnatcher.
Not that I’m getting my hopes up too much, but it would be rather nice.

  • though if it?s one series per month, what happens when we reach September?

    There are 52 weeks in a year…

  • Looking at the back of the calender…
The episodes from series 5 are on the 7th month and episodes from series 7 are on the 10th month. Whats all that about?
