Unlikely rendition of Red Dwarf theme on national radio #832; Matt Fincham, co-producer of the Chris Moyles show on Radio 1, took his cello into work today and Vernon Kay (standing in for Chris, who was climbing Kilimanjaro for Comic Relief) opened up the floor to suggestions from listeners.

Caller Craig, on the A14 on his way to Huntingdon, proved himself a Dwarfer that we can all be proud of by requesting the Red Dwarf theme. Matt did a rather nice job, in my opinion, but you can decide for yourself by clicking here and fast-forwarding to 34 minutes in.

  • I think Vernon’s genial enough, but Chris is a lot better. I used to listen to Radio 2 a lot as well, but Chris amuses and interests me a lot more than Wogan. I suppose it helps that he’s a jingle and theme tune geek like myself.

  • I stopped listening to BBC Radio ages ago.

(That’s an immigration joke, and it’s also inaccurate as I used to listen to Genius on the Listen Again website before it was integrated with the iPlayer.)

  • ARSE! I just sat through Vernon drivelling on for about 5 mins while I bobbed about the internet, then just as the fella started singing the tune for the Cellist I thought ‘What’s that tab up there? Hmm?’ Clicked on the X and silence… now I can’t be bothered to listen again, again. I’m sure it was good though – good one Craig!

  • Chris does have the following qualities:
    – He’s excellent at driving a desk and generally running a radio show
    – He’s quite funny
    – He’s a geek, and often fails to hide this fact
    – When you’re used to him, you know when he’s messing about (most of the time) and when he’s not.

I originally started listening as I changed jobs, had to get up earlier and can’t stand Sarah Kennedy. And now I’m rather a fan of his show…

Anyhow, do you want this clip in MP3?

  • You’ve got to admit Moyles is great at what he does. His huge ego makes him the perfect Radio 1 DJ. Though, unlike many of his predecessors, there IS more to him than that. I didn’t previously think so, mainly because he comes across as such a twat sometimes, especially on TV. I like him more now that I’ve heard him more.

This is another instance of Dwarf being brought up on a programme, which can only be good as we lead up to BTE. I like how just about everyone seems to have heard of Red Dwarf, even if they don’t know exactly what it is. No-one I’ve said ‘Red Dwarf’s coming back’ to has replied ‘Red Dwarf, what’s that?’ OK, maybe my mum and dad only know what it is because I had it on all the frakking time when I was at home, but I’m sure they would still have heard of the name.

Has anyone else been telling people who wouldn’t normally watch Dwarf to tune into BTE? My other half has been getting a bit weary with my constant banging of her friends…constantly banging on about Dwarf to her friends, I mean… It was funny (to me) when I was telling them, on Sunday, that it was the last day of shooting on BTE, and one of them was like ‘yeah right, how would you even know that?’ It’s not a good idea for me to start talking about Twitter and G&T to a sane person. No, I have told a few people about G&T, but NOT that I post under the name ‘performingmonkey’. I don’t reckon that would be a wise idea.

Kinda. About once a week I change my Facebook status to “looking forward to Red Dwarf: Back To Earth, April 10th on Dave” or something along those lines so people who liked the show will know about it, and those who never saw it may be curious. Also invited all my friends to join the “Red Dwarf: Back to Earth” Event, yes it has its own Event, on Facebook. No idea how many joined though.

That’s great! If all your friends tune in based on your recommendation, that’ll be at least four extra viewers.

    Fucking OUCH.

    It hurts because it’s true.
