Here we go, then!  As stated, unlock the trailer with the code MOOSE and then report back here for debriefing.

Ignoring the fact that I don’t think the idea of hiding clips behind arbitrary barriers is a very good idea, I really like this clip.  It certainly warrants being played from THE BEGINNING a few times.

If I was to be really critical I’d say two things: one, Kryten says “ship” too many times in his first line, and Chris’s Rimmer is perhaps a *little* too on the broad side, but never mind all that tot because the main gag of the scene a solid woofer.  Kryten trying his best to be helpful and serve the best interests of the crew, only to have scorn poured on him by Rimmer is a classic dynamic, and one complimented here with a lovely visual gag.  I am pleased.

Be sure to catch Dave’s Series VIII marathon today and try to spot a single gag as funny and well executed as this one.  You won’t.

  • Brilliant, first trailer I’ve laughed out loud at. I’ve liked all the trailers so far but great to actually have a chuckle.

  • Also – did we all enjoy the shot of the ship at the beginning of the ad break? With it’s 04.10.12 start date overlaid? Lovely.

  • Everyone’s first comments are being approved to help me in the WAR AGAINST SPAM, so don’t be alarmed if comments start appearing randomly.

Annoyingly, I missed the nice ship shot with the code because Dave’s fucking press release from that SHIT of a company Five by Five said the repeat run started at 11.

  • >Kryten says “ship” too many times in his first line

    Yes.

    >And Chris’s Rimmer is perhaps a *little* too on the broad side

Yes. Chris is the most prone to do this now, unfortunately. It’s not *that* bad here.

But, hey, it’s a GOOD scene. And while the joke was given away in the synopsis, I actually laughed along with the studio audience which I haven’t done for Red Dwarf in fucking years.

  • Ooh, I’ve just seen the ship shot. It’s bloody lovely, probably the best one I’ve seen.

  • Yes. Chris is the most prone to do this now, unfortunately. It’s not *that* bad here.

It’s not something that really stuck out at recordings, so I guess it’s a performance you settle into as you’re watching it.

  • OOH! OOH! Another ad break, a different model shot of the ship!

Ooh, it was a different one? Shit, looks like I’m stuck here for the whole series, then.

  • It’s a while since I’ve watched any Series VIII….and from the off this morning it’s been a bit of a shock to the system.

I’ve never really noticed before how the opening titles have snippets of most of the worst bits of the series. Couple of shots of the dinosaur, Archie, the claymation bit, Dibbley wigs….it’s like a montage of repressed abuse memories set over a guitar rock soundtrack.

  • That model shot is very reminiscent of the original fly by, the model looks superb from that angle. it will be nice when these videos turn up on YouTube, as most phones cant play the video!

  • I know, I’ve only just gotten home and thats the only one ive had a chance to get. I’ll try and get the other one later.

  • “and Chris’s Rimmer …”

As opposed to how he was played by the previous actors portraying him. ;-)

  • A funny joke but there was something off about the performances. I don’t know if it’s just because I watched it on my phone or out of context of the episode.

  • Got the link working now. I agree with Pendo, there was something a bit dodgy about that clip. Robert sounded a bit like he was doing an impression of ‘that robot off of that space comedy programme’ down the pub. The way Rimmer says fork also unsettles me.

That clip made them seem like caricature versions of the characters.

  • from the 2 teaser clips they released it seems like the cast are improvising, esp robert in this latest teaser says “sir” twice and it sounded kinda awkward

perhaps dougs directing is abit off O.o

  • >Are you sure about that?

I don’t know whether it was because the comment was awaiting moderation but yes, yes I am. [Cassandra]I’ve seen it.[/Cassandra]

  • I think it’s just the face that it’s a shorter clip from a larger scene that makes it seem off.

At first I thought Robert was struggling to remember his lines. As Cappsy wrote in the article, he seems to repeat the word ship unnecessarily. But then I remembered, Robert does this anyway throughout Red Dwarf.

  • Just come back to see if anybody else posted since me and noticed that typo that I can not edit. That should be the word ‘fact’ and not ‘face’. It just makes better sense that way.

  • > and try to spot a single gag as funny and well executed as this one. You won’t.

There’s plenty of stuff in BITR and Cassandra that’s just as good…

Bobby’s definitely having trouble with the line there (the second ‘ship’ won’t have been in the script), but they probably thought ‘sod it’ and didn’t do it again. Chris’s line delivery is dodgy too, it’s not like Rimmer…as someone said above, it needed to be deadpan. Okay, we could put it down to character development!

    > It certainly warrants being played from THE BEGINNING a few times.

ISWYDT…;) Also, I’m assuming this bit was shot in front of the audience as opposed to being a pre-record or pickup?

Btw I have an edit button. I edited a post last night and just edited this. Don’t know if that’s of any interest…

  • Thank you Ori!

    > Btw I have an edit button. I edited a post last night and just edited this. Don’t know if that’s of any interest…

I don’t have one. How is this possible?

  • Hi guys, first time poster. Been a dwarfer since I was an 11-year old watching the ’94 repeat run, and while I (like many) lost the faith a little with series VII onwards, I’ve been getting right back into excitement mode these past months, since discovering this fab site (also quite like Gazpacho Soup, but only for the news roundup, prefer G&T for the comments, casts etc.).

Really looking forward to new series, especially things like the new models, and the back-on-the-ship-with-four-cast-members set-up. The new trailer clip is ok, but I must add to the chorus of people who think Chris Barrie has sadly lost it a little in recent years. OK, Doug’s writing in series VII onwards has been hit and miss, but a good cast should still be able to make slightly off gags funny with delivery. Craig and Robert still seem able to play their characters, and from the set reports Danny has apparently “remembered” how to play Cat again (good news!), but it’s hard to believe that Chris is the same man who was stunning as both Rimmer and Brittas in the late 80s and early 90s. Rimmer Experience counterpart is right! Wish he’d tone it down.

Oh well. The 11 year old inside me is still very excited. Roll on October the 4th!

  • I don’t think it’s necessarily a case of Chris needing to ‘tone it down’, I mean there’s plenty of past Rimmer that’s all about big line delivery, it’s the venom that he used to have that’s sort of disappeared. It IS character development in some way…

  • >It’s not something that really stuck out at recordings, so I guess it’s a performance you settle into as you’re watching it.

Going on the two shows I’ve seen, there’s one sequence I recall where Chris’s performance got broader and broader with each take. The kind of stuff that I really didn’t like in BTE (Rimmer pratting about in the diving bell). Conversely, Craig is far more subtle now in his performance these days. Robert’s performance seems more dictated by the writing. He does the zany robot shit when that’s in the script – which it was frequently in VIII.

    >Danny has apparently “remembered” how to play Cat again (good news!)

Danny was responsible for some of the biggest and most deserved laughs in the bits I saw. He gets a minus point for stinking out his Cat teeth in the poster in the way he’s been doing since Series VI (specifically in Legion where he’s looking for the dancing-moose-shaped asteroid) but that’s a, um, rather minor quibble that annoys me and only me.

    >The video’s now been unlocked, so the Moose is no longer required. ;)

Pretty sure it just caches the code if you’ve visited before. I’ve just tried it from a different browser and been prompted for it.

  • Of course we shouldn’t be worried about Chris’s performance. It’s just that this is the first time Rimmer’s featured in the RDX promo, and it’s just something new to comment on. What I’ve seen of RDX Rimmer is fine. And funny.

As for the code – the news piece with the vid included has actually been reposted, removing the comments left yesterday, and unlocking the video, enabling it to be linked to on Facebook etc.

This makes me feel a bit better now. Thanks, Si. I was starting to worry quite a bit yesterday after some of the comments that followed from people who were at the recordings, and I also remembered some concerns of over the top performances on one of the set reports. If RDX Rimmer is like BtE Rimmer then I honestly don’t mind because I found him funny and mostly enjoyed what Chris was doing in those episodes, but I can see why some people might find it too broad.

  • also quite like Gazpacho Soup, but only for the news roundup, prefer G&T for the comments, casts etc.).

Oh bollocks, I’d forgotten its Sunday.

  • How Good is the youtube interactive transcript for the new clip

  • Quite enjoyed the clip, myself. Great joke, the pencil sharpener really seals it for me. I do agree about the slightly lacking performances, but they’re not bad enough to be hugely detrimental IMO.

Hoping someone grabbed the ship shots from the ad breaks and uploads them somewhere, the new model looks great.

  • Just realised, on here or anywhere else, I’ve not seen a single comment about Kryten’s mask. Each clip before we’ve had comments on it about how it looks odd but for the first time people seem to have gotten used to it.

In regards to Kryten’s line seeming a bit odd, I thought the second “sir” was the bit that meant the line didn’t flow properly. In context I’m sure it works as they are probably a little bit on edge what with, presumably, the impending attack of the simulants.

  • >(specifically in Legion where he’s looking for the dancing-moose-shaped asteroid) but that’s a, um, rather minor quibble that >annoys me and only me.

I’ll join you in that one.

Rimmers portrayal was fine in the episodes I saw, both of which focussed on him to varying degrees at various points. Only performances I felt over the top in a way that turned me off were an actor in a guest role. To early to tell how that is edited yet, to know the outcome.

  • I’ve found it amazing that I’m yet to see anyone comment on the actual codeword. But, if any future codes are John, Frank, Howard or Able, then who knows..?

Maybe they’ll all form a sentence at the end, or an anagram to work out about a plot point? “A MOOSE IS LOOSE AND THEY MUST ALL VAMOOSE IN A POD.”

  • Moose doesn’t work anymore, are they just basically allowing them to be seen for the one week?
