Then I remembered that the only thing anyone really cares about are the highest and lowest placements, so I thought I’d post my top 10 and bottom 10 in the hopes that you would too, and we could all yell at each other and say nasty things. Or just celebrate the fact that we all have opinions. Either way. 1 – Holoship 2 – Thanks for the Memory 3 – Back to Reality 4 – Out of Time 5 – Future Echoes 6 – White Hole 7 – Queeg 8 – Legion 9 – The Last Day 10 – The Inquisitor 52 – Back to Earth – Part 1 53 – Pete – Part 2 54 – Back to Earth – Part 2 55 – Trojan 56 – Waiting for God 57 – Fathers & Suns 58 – Beyond a Joke 59 – Back to Earth – Part 3 60 – Dear Dave 61 – Duct Soup That looks really bad, but I promise I didn’t start this topic just to bash Back to Earth again. I wouldn’t have thought people would be posting their own lists here – they could, after all, influence others’ lists. :/ January 8, 2013 at 11:43 pm #205687 ori-STUDFARMParticipant I’m guessing that’ll be my top. I can’t put my finger on exactly why it is my favourite episode. I certainly wouldn’t claim it to be the ‘best’ episode. But it is my personal favourite…I think it’s just the character of Confidence. I tended to go with personal favourite than best. Not always the same thing I reckon January 9, 2013 at 12:54 am #205690 Ian SymesKeymaster Tsk. Spoilers. IMHO of course, and I apologize for skewing the results so that everyone puts Holoship at #1. I like Pete as well – it’s comedic, silly, fun, all things I regularly like about RD. Buuuuut … Possibly where I see it falls down, anyway, is (a) too much repetition – it should’ve been one episode, not two – and (b) it doesn’t really speak to any larger themes. Sure, the species regression was good and the time wand was an interesting tool, but the rest was really just silliness without an emotional core. I think tightening it into one ep might have given it a theme, even something as prosaic as “wow – without Canary missions, shit sure is boring in prison; why, it’s not much better than being stuck on a ship almost alone 3 million years into space. We have to break up this monotony … Basketball, anyone?” I do like the nekkid menz, though. January 10, 2013 at 1:26 am #205730 srmcd1Participant I think Pete was a missed opportunity. I’m in the minority that likes the nano-Rimmer, and his relationship with Lister was fascinating, particularly in this episode. Instead of reacting against each other, they work together in an environment that is way different to the one we’re used to (them coming together against the wardens and Ackerman). I really think that relationship should’ve been explored more thoroughly, because it could’ve been interesting to see how the nano Rimmer grappled with his existence – the fact that he’s a clone of himself and that there was a hologram of himself that Lister (comparatively) became rather “chummy” with and went off to become a space hero while he’s stuck here. Sadly, this was missed out on in favor of cheap gags, and it has since been relegated to fan fiction. January 11, 2013 at 12:21 am #205740 CarlitoParticipant > Carlito – Balance of Power as your least favourite episode? Please explain! I can’t. I kind of generally worked out which episodes I would prefer to watch over others. I’ve never really felt fondly towards Balance of Power. I think as a kid I found it boring and maybe that continues to paint my opinion to this day. But I guess if I was going to watch any episode of Red Dwarf right now, that would probably be literally the last episode I’d pick. It does have some redeeming elements. Not a huge fan of Waiting for God from series I either. I started on V and worked my way backwards so those two episodes from the first run seem the furthest away from the show I fell in love with. January 11, 2013 at 1:01 am #205741 fozzibear1Participant the real problem with democracy is that no matter who you vote for you always end up with a silly bastard January 11, 2013 at 9:13 am #205746 NoFroParticipant Waiting for God is problematic because half of it is some of the funniest stuff in season one and the other half is almost completely naff. January 11, 2013 at 3:19 pm #205752 RidleyParticipant Well I don’t believe Cat or Lister drink coffee six times a day, it would be nice to know why the Dwarfers are going along with Rimmer’s plan, I’m not a fan of the impact it has on Rimmer lore and the phone thread wasn’t particularly satisfying. January 11, 2013 at 5:29 pm #205753 Pete Part ThreeParticipant >Well I don’t believe Cat or Lister drink coffee six times a day To be fair, this is kind of the point of it. They’re buying something they clearly don’t need. That’s as much as I can be prepared to defend it, I think For everything I like about it, there’s something I dislike about it. The phone stuff, the way Rimmer reacts to his brother’s death, the opening scene – all a bit shit. I’m still not convinced by the Moose stuff, actually. But I still think there are far, far worse episodes and this does have the Cat’s funniest moment in about 20 years. January 11, 2013 at 5:47 pm #205755 Hard Drive Full Of ResentmentParticipant 1. Camille-blob pulls it down for me though) 54. Stoke Me A Clipper (the portrayal of Ace and obvious continuity errors spoil it) 55. This survey is such a big thing, and Red Dwarf is such a big part of my life, and has been for so long, that I felt it vitally important that I was as honest as possible in compiling my list. Also, If anyone’s interested in this sort of thing, my highest/lowest placed episodes for each series are at: RDI – 4/39; RDII – 2/27; RDIII – 1/18; RDIV – 8/26; RDV – 5/33; RDVI – 13/41; RDVII – 40/57; RDVIII – 37/61; BtE – 45/56; and RDX – 34/52.
