Hang on… http://www.thespoof.com/news/spoof.cfm?headline=s3i10425 Personally, I quite liked this one… http://www.thespoof.com/news/spoof.cfm?headline=s4i10428 March 12, 2009 at 12:50 am #93745 RicheyParticipant Sign up to the official website mailing list dude – Nicky emails us all every so often with updates. There’s polaroids on the site now of the band in the studio with Albini. That’s right – the new album is produced by Steve Albini! If that doesn’t get you excited then I don’t know what will :D March 12, 2009 at 2:05 am #93747 pfmParticipant While I’m looking forward to it immensely, it’s either gonna be brilliant or the biggest mistake they’ve ever made (OK, maybe nothing could be worse than James thinking stuff like Song For Departure was a good idea! the solo aside…). I hope it doesn’t sound like they’re too desperately trying to recapture their old ferocity. Many bands have fallen flat on their faces trying to do the same. I still think Know Your Enemy was a great record. OK, some cringeworthy moments like Let Robeson Sing and the lyrics to Royal Correspondant, but I love how raw everything is. I saw them in Manchester on that tour and it was the best ever. March 12, 2009 at 2:24 am #93748 CarlitoParticipant I guess coming off the back of the amazing ‘Masses Against The Classes’ (the first single to reach number one in the charts this millennium, trivia buffs) I expected something a bit… better from ‘Know Your Enemy’. Wasn’t bad, but wasn’t great. I’m a big fan of ‘Ocean Spray’ and the sentiment behind it. March 12, 2009 at 12:25 pm #93754 siParticipant > 11. Extreme – Pornograffiti Oooh, yes. March 12, 2009 at 4:05 pm #93765 mickParticipant Cheers Si ;) March 13, 2009 at 12:32 pm #93794 Tarka DalParticipant > ?Generation Terrorists? is just too long and not that melodic !! Okay in reverse order “not melodic” I just can’t compute that at all, but each to their own. As for “too long” – Well it was meant to be a double-album. The whole speil behind the release of that record was that the Manics would release one double album, sell 20 million copies and split-up. Only the record label wouldn’t put it out as a double LP so we got stuck with it’s final form. I own a gatefold vinyl copy in mint condition which has to be one of my favourite things in the world. Re: Mick’s List No Gotthard. No Wang Chung. Our friendship is over :( March 13, 2009 at 4:27 pm #93810 mickParticipant It is only the top 50 ;) March 13, 2009 at 8:14 pm #93819 RadParticipant Generation Terrorists is just very dated. It’s the only Manics album I didn’t like first time I listened to it but then I did come to it last (Order I listened to Manics albums: TIMTTMY, GATS, EMG, KYE, LB, THB, GT and then of course SATT) and EMG is the only album that could successfully follow on from the Bible. I like it now but it took a long time and I must admit I had to see them live before I could appreciate Motorcycle Emptiness. Strangely, even though its older, You Love Us (Heavenly) still sounds amazing. Looking forward to Journal for Plague Lovers. I loved Wire’s solo album but I don’t know – I’m not sure he’s been as lyrically successful as he might have been. Some cracking Social History Rock but some of his output has been disappointing. March 13, 2009 at 9:16 pm #93821 Tarka DalParticipant > Generation Terrorists is just very dated Timeless ;-) March 13, 2009 at 10:35 pm #93823 DaveParticipant > Generation Terrorists is just very dated If only by definition, surely March 13, 2009 at 10:54 pm #93824 RicheyParticipant Generation Terrorists still kicks the arse of most modern rock album debuts. You know this to be true >:D March 14, 2009 at 1:28 pm #93837 RadParticipant Oh yeah, it definitely does that. March 14, 2009 at 9:28 pm #93846 AnonymousInactive Christ. I don’t even have that much pony on my iPod. No Smiths, James or Stone Roses. Or Pulp. I’d rather have white noise. March 14, 2009 at 9:36 pm #93848 AnonymousInactive ‘The Wall’ also absent. And somebody else likes Marillion! March 14, 2009 at 10:55 pm #93854 pfmParticipant Generation Terrorists is an amazing record, just for the sheer volume of ideas on there, both lyrically and from James riffing and soloing like there was no tomorrow. Yet the production puts me off sometimes. I don’t think there are any real drums on the album, am I right? James played every single note on it. And it does sound almost like a covers album, with The Clash, GNR, Pistols all over it. That’s not a bad thing, but for me the Manics are defined by THB and EMG. This is no doubt due to me being too young for GT. EMG was when I was really getting into music. Lol just found this. Wtf is Nicky doing?? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DIStruye-mw March 14, 2009 at 11:25 pm #93860 RicheyParticipant monkey – Sean plays ALL the drums and rhythm instruments on GT. James plays all the guitar. Nicky plays most of the bass, though James did some. Richey doesn’t play a fucking note hehehe he just looked the shit with a guitar. Sexy man that he was :D March 14, 2009 at 11:27 pm #93861 RicheyParticipant Lol just found this. Wtf is Nicky doing?? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DIStruye-mw hehehe The Wire looks so awesome in that vid. Love how The Word producers were expecting them to play ‘Love’s Sweet Exile’ and when they instead launch into ‘Repeat’ they put the wrong caption up anyways! :P March 14, 2009 at 11:39 pm #93863 pfmParticipant > Sean plays ALL the drums and rhythm instruments on GT I’m not saying it wasn’t Sean but I’m pretty sure it’s all drum machine on the album and not real drums. That’s one reason I like the Heavenly version of You Love Us a lot more (it’s definitely the best version, maybe if you disregard the ‘woohoo’ backing vocals!). Everything they did from ’91-’94 still defies logic. The jumps from GT to GATS to THB, how the hell did they manage it?? March 14, 2009 at 11:52 pm #93866 RicheyParticipant There are no drum machines on GT. Trust me on this one my friend. It’s all real drums. It’s just that Sean is playing in a room with appalling acoustics, so they chucked a load of reverb on the drum track and we end up with what’s there. Still some amazing moments on GT and I always get a tingle down my spine whenever I listen to the very last moment on the album – ‘There’s nothing I wanna see, there’s nowhere I wanna go.’ I don’t know if it’s the way James sings it, the line itself or the beautifully held harmonic from the guitar in the background, but something about that moment brings all sorts of emotions out in me. March 15, 2009 at 2:52 pm #93881 CarlitoParticipant Get a room. March 15, 2009 at 2:54 pm #93882 CarlitoParticipant lol just messing. So, for someone who is such a massive Manics fan, why are they only in at 10, 71 and 97 on your list? March 15, 2009 at 6:04 pm #93891 DaveParticipant >I don?t even have that much pony on my iPod. Look, I think we’ve all got something we can bring to this discussion, but I think from now on the thing you should bring is silence. March 15, 2009 at 6:48 pm #93896 siParticipant I bought the Kings of Leon’s debut album on the strength of the review in the Metro alone, having never heard them. Gone off them since they shaved… March 15, 2009 at 7:10 pm #93897 RicheyParticipant Carl lol just messing. But *after* the booze and the hookers. March 16, 2009 at 1:41 pm #93930 Tarka DalParticipant > Everything they did from ?91-?94 still defies logic. The jumps from GT to GATS to THB, how the hell did they manage it?? I’ve always thought there was a clear progression and development. Nothing they’ve done has ever really surprised me, just entertained. March 16, 2009 at 3:46 pm #93932 pfmParticipant It’s the difference between GATS and THB that amazes me the most. March 16, 2009 at 4:13 pm #93933 Tarka DalParticipant Fair enough. As mentioned before I think GATS is a great piece of work, although I know I’m in the minority. THB I always feel uncomfortable with mainly because of the ‘Cult of Richey’ which stems from it. The bleakness and pain on that record mostly just goes to make me think of a talented lyricist, creative and thinker and the horrific mental state he was in. I don’t mean that as a criticism of anyone who respects that record. It’s just a personal reaction too it. I like how Manics talk has taken over a music thread created by a ‘Richey’. March 16, 2009 at 5:58 pm #93935 Seb PatrickKeymaster I don’t like the Manics, but all you people who do like the Manics desperately, DESPERATELY need to read volume one of Phonogram. That is all.
