Taking into consideration the fact that I have over 500 albums, wittling it down to the 100 records I couldn’t live without was no easy task. Painful choices were made. Sign up to the official website mailing list dude – Nicky emails us all every so often with updates. There’s polaroids on the site now of the band in the studio with Albini. That’s right – the new album is produced by Steve Albini! If that doesn’t get you excited then I don’t know what will :D

While I’m looking forward to it immensely, it’s either gonna be brilliant or the biggest mistake they’ve ever made (OK, maybe nothing could be worse than James thinking stuff like Song For Departure was a good idea! the solo aside…). I hope it doesn’t sound like they’re too desperately trying to recapture their old ferocity. Many bands have fallen flat on their faces trying to do the same.

I still think Know Your Enemy was a great record. OK, some cringeworthy moments like Let Robeson Sing and the lyrics to Royal Correspondant, but I love how raw everything is. I saw them in Manchester on that tour and it was the best ever.

I guess coming off the back of the amazing ‘Masses Against The Classes’ (the first single to reach number one in the charts this millennium, trivia buffs) I expected something a bit… better from ‘Know Your Enemy’. Wasn’t bad, but wasn’t great. I’m a big fan of ‘Ocean Spray’ and the sentiment behind it.

    > ?Generation Terrorists? is just too long and not that melodic

    !!

Okay in reverse order “not melodic” I just can’t compute that at all, but each to their own.

As for “too long” – Well it was meant to be a double-album. The whole speil behind the release of that record was that the Manics would release one double album, sell 20 million copies and split-up. Only the record label wouldn’t put it out as a double LP so we got stuck with it’s final form. I own a gatefold vinyl copy in mint condition which has to be one of my favourite things in the world.

Generation Terrorists is just very dated. It’s the only Manics album I didn’t like first time I listened to it but then I did come to it last (Order I listened to Manics albums: TIMTTMY, GATS, EMG, KYE, LB, THB, GT and then of course SATT) and EMG is the only album that could successfully follow on from the Bible. I like it now but it took a long time and I must admit I had to see them live before I could appreciate Motorcycle Emptiness. Strangely, even though its older, You Love Us (Heavenly) still sounds amazing.

Looking forward to Journal for Plague Lovers. I loved Wire’s solo album but I don’t know – I’m not sure he’s been as lyrically successful as he might have been. Some cracking Social History Rock but some of his output has been disappointing.

Christ. I don’t even have that much pony on my iPod.

No Smiths, James or Stone Roses. Or Pulp.

    I’d rather have white noise.

Generation Terrorists is an amazing record, just for the sheer volume of ideas on there, both lyrically and from James riffing and soloing like there was no tomorrow. Yet the production puts me off sometimes. I don’t think there are any real drums on the album, am I right? James played every single note on it. And it does sound almost like a covers album, with The Clash, GNR, Pistols all over it. That’s not a bad thing, but for me the Manics are defined by THB and EMG. This is no doubt due to me being too young for GT. EMG was when I was really getting into music.

Lol just found this. Wtf is Nicky doing?? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DIStruye-mw

monkey – Sean plays ALL the drums and rhythm instruments on GT. James plays all the guitar. Nicky plays most of the bass, though James did some. Richey doesn’t play a fucking note hehehe he just looked the shit with a guitar. Sexy man that he was :D

hehehe The Wire looks so awesome in that vid. Love how The Word producers were expecting them to play ‘Love’s Sweet Exile’ and when they instead launch into ‘Repeat’ they put the wrong caption up anyways! :P

    > Sean plays ALL the drums and rhythm instruments on GT

I’m not saying it wasn’t Sean but I’m pretty sure it’s all drum machine on the album and not real drums. That’s one reason I like the Heavenly version of You Love Us a lot more (it’s definitely the best version, maybe if you disregard the ‘woohoo’ backing vocals!).

Everything they did from ’91-’94 still defies logic. The jumps from GT to GATS to THB, how the hell did they manage it??

    #93866

There are no drum machines on GT. Trust me on this one my friend. It’s all real drums. It’s just that Sean is playing in a room with appalling acoustics, so they chucked a load of reverb on the drum track and we end up with what’s there. Still some amazing moments on GT and I always get a tingle down my spine whenever I listen to the very last moment on the album – ‘There’s nothing I wanna see, there’s nowhere I wanna go.’ I don’t know if it’s the way James sings it, the line itself or the beautifully held harmonic from the guitar in the background, but something about that moment brings all sorts of emotions out in me.

Fair enough. As mentioned before I think GATS is a great piece of work, although I know I’m in the minority. THB I always feel uncomfortable with mainly because of the ‘Cult of Richey’ which stems from it. The bleakness and pain on that record mostly just goes to make me think of a talented lyricist, creative and thinker and the horrific mental state he was in. I don’t mean that as a criticism of anyone who respects that record. It’s just a personal reaction too it.

I like how Manics talk has taken over a music thread created by a ‘Richey’.
