Right, so now we’ve had a little time to deliberate, cogitate and digest, where does Back to Earth place on your all-time favourite Dwarf?

For me, as far as series are concerned (even though BtE isn’t a complete series)…it goes

    V>II>IV>III>VI>I>BtE>VIII>VII

As for individual episodes, I preferred Back to Earth to:

Everything in 7 and 8….apart from maybe Cassandra.

    Emohawk,

    Camille,

    Meltdown,

    Backwards,

    Waiting for God.

On a similar level to Series VII and below everything else.

I still don’t understand why the episodes were not filmed in front of a live audience……..this left the atmosphere cold and in my opinion weakened the whole trilogy. There is a quality in live shows that reflects in the performances and the jokes are certainly times better, i just felt deflated by this.

I’m unable to view BTE as anything aside from three episodes of varying quality. Even lumped together I’d say that the beginning is ropey, the middle is good and the ending is mostly awful.

It definitely works better as a whole.
I’m going to have to go away and think about this…

I have provisionally placed BtE 28th (after only one viewing) in my personal all-time list. That puts it above the following Series 1-6 eps: The End, Demons and Angels, Bodyswap, Rimmerworld, Parallel Universe, Confidence and Paranoia, Better Than Life, Waiting for God and Emohawk: Polymorph 2.

    By series, it goes 4>5>3>2>6>1>BtE>7>8.

I know… if only someone had talked about it anywhere! I think this calls for a G&T Investigation…

Considering my rankings for the first six series change on a daily basis, this is very difficult. But I think broadly speaking, I-VI > BTE > VII > VIII. And that’s the best that I could have hoped for.

As these eps were broadcast individually though, shouldn`t they be judged individually really? In the same way that G&T recently compiled a list of their favourite 52 eps a while ago considering BitR and Pete to be multi-parters.

    > I still don?t understand why the episodes were not filmed in front of a live audience

In terms of time, money and not wanting stories to leak it was understandable.

In terms of the actual episodes, I agree that they should have been filmed in front of an audience. The Back to Reality stuff the audience could have coped with (they did the first time after all) and the dramatic scenes weren`t too dramatic either. After all, other audience sitcoms have effectively dealt with the funerals of cast members in the past and not suffered.

it also effected the timing of the humour which seemed stale.

Fine, in that case, Part 1 goes in 37th out of 55 (between Rimmerworld and Parallel Universe), Part 3 goes in 29th (between Stasis Leak and The End, just like the whole 3-parter originally did) and Part 2 goes in 26th (between Out of Time and Backwards. Yes G&T, I have OOT in 25th place. Apart from that, though, our lists aren’t massively different.)

I preferred Back to Earth to:

    Waiting For God
    Only the Good
Pete (the episodes and the forum-visitor)
    Beyond a Joke

    That might about do it.

    >I still don?t understand why the episodes were not filmed in front of a live audience

Based on the fact that you didn’t show shock and surprise to Nick’s post which stated what the majority of us already knew… that it was down to the timescales and the massively tight budget, clearly what you meant to say was that you do understand why they didn’t have an audience but you wanted to complain about it again anyway. And whether the actors would have preferred it is irrelevant since them wanting an audience doesn’t create more time or increase the available budget to make this possible.

Also in answer to the original question… I don’t know. I’ve not decided yet. I’m finding it hard to place it, I really enjoyed BtE but at the same time I don’t feel as though it fits in with Red Dwarf as a series…

I prefer BTE as a whole to most Red Dwarf stories, not as good as ‘Backwards’, ‘Back to Reality’, ‘Out of Time’ or ‘Meltdown’ but still pretty high up.

Not only in my opinion was lack of audience down to budget, but I can’t really see an audience do it’s job properly when 50% of it was filmed on green screen… they wouldn’t have a clue what was going on!

Plus the plot would’ve been online quicker then a ‘celebrities’ sex vid. And that’s pretty darn quick!

And as for it fitting in within the series… it isn’t a series, it’s a standalone special. So for that reason alone I feel it doesn’t fit in anywhere. When Series X comes along, THEN we can rate the new standard…

For me the important thing is, as the guys said on the podcast, BTE can hold its own against series I-VI. That’s a first for a Doug solo script, in my view.

This. All i know is that i enjoyed it more than VIII but not as much as some parts of VII. That’s not to say it was crap, far from it. But in terms of Doug-solo Dwarf, it’s better than VIII. IMHO

VIII is the weakest series IMO and BtE ranks alongside it.

I decided the only way to do this was to (re-)rate Red Dwarf episode by episode rather than series by series.

When that proved impossible, I decided upon:

    IV > III > II > V > BtE > VI > VIII > I > VII

Although Queeg remains possibly my fave episode.

Bearing in mind my fave episodes of each series are Future Echoes, Queeg, Marooned, Justice, Quarantine, Gunmen of the Apocalypse, Stoke Me A Clipper and Cassandra, the idea of placing all the episodes in order is ridiculous as, for example, I prefer Cassandra over lots of series VI.

Y’see, this is why I never really got involved in the ‘Top 51…’ thread…
