The absolute brilliance of that sequence, the use of the music… everything made up for the fact that series two was a little disappointing compared to the first. It would have been fine if they’d just had the first series ending with that scene, to be honest.

It doesn’t matter how many times I watch that, it doesn’t get any less special. Jacobi is fantastic, obviously, but Tennant also has his finest five minutes as The Doctor. EVERYTHING works.

I’d almost go so far as to say Jacobi’s performance in Utopia is the equal, if not the better, of anything in Who. Ever. That moment when he turns around after opening the watch… there’s no makeup, or anything like that, but purely through his eyes you can see that he’s changed. Awe-inspiring stuff.

And I still get a shiver down my spine when it cuts in the Face of Boe bit. And when you hear the Gallifrey music (although at the time we didn’t know it was that, of course) as Yana is remembering “his” life. And… oh, the whole thing gives me goosebumps.

Shame the LoM clip is messed up by David Bowie trying to copy John Lennon. The Master moment though is priceless. IMO they were beyond lucky to get both Jacobi AND Simm to do the role (Jacobi being immensely excellent in those few moments where he’s The Master). I know Simm grates on some people with all the Tennant-esque yelling and running around but I think he was exactly the right choice. If Eccleston had still been the Doctor probably the most perfect Master would have been Sean Bean (though it would have been more or less repeating his Trevelyan role in Goldeneye). I hope Moffat gets to deal with the character in the future. More likely to be the Rani and/or the Valeyard from Trial that return before him though.

And there’s plenty of stuff we already DO know about that qualifies as crisis…why does there have to be a hidden one that takes precedence?

Whomever gets in WILL have to face a crisis, and that crisis is proving himself to be able to handle the position RIGHT OFF THE BAT. There won’t be any time to get used to it. He won’t be able to coast along until tragedy strikes. We’ve had 8 years of tragedy. If the next president doesn’t take fast steps toward rectifying that, he’s already a failure.
