    The Lyre bird: Nature?s Sampler

That was amazing. I saw a clip of that on the 7 O’ clock show just this afternoon. (or rather yesterday afternoon now as it’s just turned midnight as I write this.) I didn’t here those worker/saw sounds though last time.

I’ve seen that Lyrebird clip umpteen times but i’m amazed at it’s accuracy. Truly amazing.

Just stumbled across this on The Hits – and it’s brilliant:

    http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=CEhT2QlRBMo

Directed by Garth Jennings who, after Son of Rambow, I am happy to declare a genius.

    From Wikipedia:

“The entire video took twenty seconds to shoot. What you’re watching is a loop that goes forwards for twenty seconds, backwards for twenty seconds, forwards for twenty seconds, backwards for twenty seconds, with one camera, static, and then using a technique called ‘pan and scan’…moving in on certain parts of the entire picture.”

I’ve always wondered how that video was made. Awesome! Michel Gondry is also a certified genius.

I don’t even have to click your link Andrew to know it’s that Imitation of Life video. :-)

Definitely a great video…it actually manages to take a mediocre song and make it seem far better than it really is, simply by association.

I do wonder, though, how they got certain party guests to mouth fragments of the song…if it was only a 20 second loop then they must have had everyone singing a different part of the song at the same time, which is by no means undoable…but it would sure take an admirable amount of coordination!

I think that’s what makes it – and Gondry’s stuff – so affecting. You KNOW how much work it is logistically. I love a shot you can’t quite wrap your head around. Rare in the digital age, but these guys prove it’s still possible.

I’m in the process of making a Gondry-esque music video for my college project with a bit of Close Encounters and the influence of Chris Cunningham thrown in. I’ll Upload it to youtube/GoogleVid when it’s done.

It is ridiculously silly and kinda sick in places that’s true. (Although that’s kind of the point.)
And the acting was hokey (but again… it was supposed to be..)

    I haven’t seen Uwe Boll’s Postal.

Didn’t have a problem with the tone or the point. Just found it lazily written and painfully unfunny! But each to his own.

So exactly like the show it’s parodying. Obviously Heroes isn’t meant to be funny but it doesn’t need to be so fucking depressing and uninteresting to the point of nausea.

Wow, Mad TV! I didn’t even realize that show was still on.

I remember when it premiered, and everyone was hoping that some competition would make Saturday Night Live start being funny again.

    It didn’t.

And then Mad TV gave up, too.

They both have their moments, mind.

But jeez oh man is American sketch comedy depressing.

    #80627

    >But jeez oh man is American sketch comedy depressing.

This. If I want good sketch comedy that isn’t from England, I have to content myself with DVDs of older and comparatively obscure stuff like The Kids in the Hall and Mr. Show. The current state of American sketch comedy shows is downright frustrating–badly written, badly acted and never trying an original idea when a thoroughly overused recurring character will do instead.

To be honest, the only current sketch show on British telly I think is any good is Mitchell & Webb (although there was The Peter Serafinowicz Show last year, too, but that’s not coming back). I don’t think we’re hugely better off at the moment, either…

Not necessarily funny but I like this little sequence from the seriously underrated film that is…Hudson Hawk –

    http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=tVAVCW2t_TE

Interestingly enough (or not, particularly if you’re of the sane persuasion) I ended up picking that through watching John’s clip and remembering cheesy American TV intros from when I was about 10 or 11, notably this show that’s surely a contender for the greatest sci-fi sitcom of all-time!

    http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=zBgDgQmUnNY

I used to really fancy the girl in that. Ah it’s all coming back to me now… me and her and Melody from The Queen’s Nose all living on a planet somewhere. Childhood fantasies… I could weep… actually I already am, quite nifty stuff this precum…

    >notably this show that?s surely a contender for the greatest sci-fi sitcom of all-time!

Funny you remember that show…most Americans don’t even remember it!

I used to watch it all the time, but I admit I don’t think I’ve seen that full-length intro. Maybe they trimmed it down in later seasons, or maybe I only caught the show on edited repeats.

The music was definitely the same (for many, many years I always thought of that song as The Theme From Out of This World…I never realized it existed long beforehand), and the logo, and the paintcan being halted in mid-air, but that’s all I remember for sure. The departure sequence for Earth was definitely cut out of whatever airings I was watching.

Definitely something I used to love as a child, though. Ditto Small Wonder, about the little girl robot who would misinterpret simple commands. They really don’t make shows like that anymore, do they?

    Thank god.
