In the name of pop-culture I’d like each and every last m*thefucking one of you to recommend the following… ONE FILM ONE BOOK ONE ALBUM ONE OTHER REALLY COOL THING* * – Said thing cannot be a film, book or an album. Creator Topic Viewing 50 replies - 1 through 50 (of 56 total) 1 2 Author Replies October 3, 2009 at 11:32 am #103964 Kris ‘Drivaaar’ CarterParticipant FILM: Speed. Because it is gloriously stupid good fun. BOOK: Truckers/Diggers/Wings by Terry Pratchett – a fantastic trilogy! ALBUM: Yourself or Somene Like You by Matchbox Twenty – because it’s shorter than most Meatloaf albums. ONE OTHER REALLY COOL THING THAT IS NOT A FILM, BOOK OR ALBUM: Any Transformers: Alternators toy – they’re just THAT cool. October 3, 2009 at 11:52 am #103965 DaveParticipant ONE FILM: The Fisher King ONE BOOK: Gulliver’s Travels ONE ALBUM: This Is Hardcore ONE OTHER REALLY COOL THING: Nebulous, a radio show you should all buy October 3, 2009 at 1:12 pm #103967 AndrewParticipant ONE FILM: The Fly ONE BOOK: The Shining ONE ALBUM: Life In Cartoon Motion ONE OTHER REALLY COOL THING: The Fountain (graphic novel and movie for full experience) October 3, 2009 at 1:14 pm #103968 peas_and_cornParticipant ONE FILM: Johnny Got His Gun This film is about a bloke who had his face and limbs blown off in WW1 and his journey in trying to come to terms with his life. It’s very interesting. ONE BOOK: Inside the Global Jihad Written by a bloke who joined the French security services, became a member of Al Qaeda and went to a training camp in Afghanistan, and his story. Reads like fiction, is all true. Amazing and easy to read. ONE ALBUM: Opeth “Ghost Reveries” Fantastic album by the blokes from Sweden. ONE OTHER REALLY COOL THING: Lunch Meet It’s the off topic podcast by the brewing network which sometimes crosses the line but is really funny. October 3, 2009 at 1:49 pm #103969 hummingbirdParticipant Delicatessen A Prayer for Owen Meany: John Irving Tom McRae: Tom McRae The Hunterian Museum, London – fascinating and gruesome. Not recommended for a romantic date. October 3, 2009 at 2:55 pm #103971 BazParticipant One Film- Moulin Rouge. One Book- London, The Biography by Peter Ackroyd. One Album- Stereotomy by The Alan Parsons Project. One Really Cool Thing- Digital radio. October 3, 2009 at 3:14 pm #103973 Jonathan CappsKeymaster ONE FILM: Your mother. ONE BOOK: Your mother by Your mother. ONE ALBUM: Your mother (self titled). ONE OTHER REALLY COOL THING: Your mother. October 3, 2009 at 3:24 pm #103974 ori-STUDFARMParticipant FILM- Goonies. Can’t beat a bit of 80’s harmless fun BOOK- Only Forwards by Michael Marshal Smith. Starts of as a stupid futuristic comedy about a private eye (dick :)) that is hired to find a missing person. then, about halfway through it suddenly turns into a very dark and scary horror story. Absolutely fantastic for a debut novel! ALBUM- Cortizone- Selling Out For A Sucker. Available very cheap on Amazon but not on iTunes. The band are now split up, but this album is an amazing melodic rock/metal. They have a myspace where some of the tracks can be heard if you want to check it out…..but I can’t be arsed top post the link! ONE REALLY COOL THING- The Suckcast podcast. Childish and immature humour. They use the podcast to promote a film they’ve made which they are trying to find distributers for. Basically 2 american blokes (and 1 in the background) The humour is childish, sometimes sexist and always funny as fuck!(IMO) The best thing is one host trying to control his co-hosts A.D.D. (I can’t spell Attention Deficit Disorder) giving in and switching his mic off! October 3, 2009 at 3:32 pm #103975 siParticipant FILM: The Rocky Horror Picture Show. (Yes, I’m obviously a perv.) BOOK: Who On Earth Is Tom Baker? (The best autobiography ever.) ALBUM: The Life On Mars Soundtrack album. (It may be a compilation, but it’s one of the only albums I have complete on my mp3 player.) ONE OTHER REALLY COOL THING: Spaced. (Unbelievably, it’s ten years since this was first shown. Dave will be showing it from the beginning from later this month.) October 3, 2009 at 3:41 pm #103977 Pete Part ThreeParticipant OK, these aren’t my favourites…but since my favourites aren’t exactly obscure, I thought I’d go for stuff that there’s a slim chance you might not be aware of. FILM : 12 Angry Men BOOK : Everything I Know I Learned From TV, Mark Rowlands ALBUM : I’m Not Dead, Pink ONE OTHER REALLY COOL THING : The Angry Video Game Nerd October 3, 2009 at 3:43 pm #103979 JonsmadParticipant Film: Still Crazy (starring Bill Nighy) Book: The Complete Farside by Gary Larson Album: The Liberty Of Norton Folgate (Madness) Other Really Cool thing: Ganymede & Titan October 3, 2009 at 4:57 pm #103982 Bob LoblawParticipant FILM : The Lookout BOOK : Unreal!, Paul Jennings ALBUM : The ’59 Sound, The Gaslight Anthem ONE OTHER REALLY COOL THING : Dr Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog October 3, 2009 at 6:24 pm #103984 Ben PaddonParticipant Film: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind I love this film. It’s easily my favourite film of all time. It’s a sort-of scifi-love-drama-comedy film in which Jim Carrey plays more or less the straight man and Kate Winslet plays the batshit insane Jim Carrey role, and it works really well. It’s a beautiful piece of film and I could watch it every day for the rest of my life. Book: “Feet of Clay” by Terry Pratchett Re-read this recently and decided it’s probably my favourite Discworld novel. A fascinating, clever fantasy murder mystery. Album: “Demon Days” by Gorillaz I love this album. I have difficulty listening to the tracks individually – usually if one pops up on my iPhone’s shuffle I’ll skip it – but the album from beginning to end is an unrivalled masterpiece. There isn’t anything else quite like it. Other Thing: “Left 4 Dead” – Xbox 360, PC Cracking game. October 3, 2009 at 6:54 pm #103986 JamesTCParticipant Film: Clerks Book: Lord of the Flies Album: Oasis – Be Here Now Cool Thing: Crackdown, it is like GTA meets the Hulk on crack. October 3, 2009 at 6:59 pm #103988 Joey TORDFCParticipant Film: Fanboys Book: The Time Traveler’s Wife (the film was shit) Album: Tilly and The Wall – O Cool Thing: Saw – The Ride October 3, 2009 at 9:00 pm #103991 MANI506Participant Film: Live Forever (documentary about British music in the 90s. Great for dwarfers of a certain age and Noel and Jarvis are really funny too) Book: Harry Potter (I’m surprised how much I’m enjoying the series having previously shown no interest) Album: Pulp – This Is Hardcore. I second that! Absolutely brilliant. Other cool thing: Collings and Herrin is mah favourite podcast. October 3, 2009 at 9:16 pm #103992 DaffParticipant Film: Shaolin Soccer Book: Shogun – James Clavell Album: Terrorvision – Regular Urban Survivors Other Cool Thing: A Fridge October 3, 2009 at 10:25 pm #103994 Phil1034Participant Film: ‘Good Night and Good Luck’ Book: ‘The Complete Book of Scriptwriting’ – J. ONE BOOK: Your mother by Your mother. ONE ALBUM: Your mother (self titled). ONE OTHER REALLY COOL THING: Your mother. Your mother gets around. October 4, 2009 at 12:00 am #103999 CarlitoParticipant On the understanding that “recommend” doesn’t neccessarily imply that the following items represent my actual favourite item in each genre, nor neccessarily suggest that I consider these to have the highest artistic quality in their respective genres… ONE FILM: Ghost Busters (greatest Hollywood popcorn blockbuster ever) ONE BOOK: Colony (simply because it’s my most recent read and I really enjoyed) ONE ALBUM: Ian Broudie – Tales Told (because only about 5 people ever bought it and its cruelly overlooked… not my absolute favourite ever but it deserves to be heard) ONE OTHER REALLY COOL THING: Harry Hill’s early stand up comedy, before he became Mr. Family Entertainment Cabaret Act. I mourn for ‘old Harry’. October 4, 2009 at 12:04 am #104000 CarlitoParticipant > Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. I love this film. I hear ya. It makes me feel something and I don’t know what. I mourn for ?old Harry?. Funnily enough I hated Harry Hill’s early stand up, it’s only recently with TV Burp that I’ve warmed to him. October 4, 2009 at 12:34 pm #104010 siParticipant >Album: Terrorvision – Regular Urban Survivors God, I remember when this album came out. I was your average ‘Kerrang!’ teenager, with all the posters from the mag on the wall. I had a penpal called Amanda who sent me a recorded copy of the album on a tape, with a little message from herself afterwards. I went to HMV and nicked a cassette inlay for said tape, because I’m pernickerty like that… As for Harry Hill – I thought his old C4 show was hilarious. It lost something when it came to ITV. And as brilliant as TV Burp is, I must agree, stuff like ‘Hooves’ is brilliant. October 4, 2009 at 4:58 pm #104015 Seb PatrickKeymaster – The Hudsucker Proxy – Bryan Lee O’Malley – Scott Pilgrim (I can’t recommend starting at anywhere but the first of the five volumes so far, but if you only want me to choose one book, then it’s volume four, Scott Pilgrim Gets It Together) – The Unicorns – Who Will Cut Our Hair When We’re Gone? – The November issues of Wired UK and When Saturday Comes, both of which feature articles by a certain S. Contentedly melancholy, I think Definitely one of my favourites of the last few years. I too feel like watching it again right now! When I first saw it I was in a shitty place, for various reasons, and I think as a result it sank deep into my brain and…cleansed me, almost biblical style(!) It’s one of those genuinely perfect films. The first 10 minutes or so when they meet ‘again’ on the train, you can’t tear your eyes away from it because it’s so beautifully executed. The ending is equally as amazing. They know they’re probably going to argue, fall out, leave each other again like before, and yet their attitude is basically ‘fuck it’. All the stuff they said in the tapes means nothing. Apparently it was originally going to end with the idea that they had erased their memories more than once and yet they always end up in the snow together. October 4, 2009 at 10:34 pm #104028 Nick RParticipant ONE FILM – Almost Famous, which I watched last week and really enjoyed. (Some of you have mentioned Eternal Sunshine – yep, it’s brilliant, but I love Adaptation. and Being John Malkovich just as much.) ONE BOOK – The Player of Games by Iain M Banks. I’ve read three of his Culture novels recently, and this was my favourite so far. Although I’m looking forward to getting to Excession, after what I’ve heard about it… ONE ALBUM – Sonic Youth’s Daydream Nation, because it really is as good as its reputation suggests. ONE OTHER REALLY COOL THING – This webcomic page ONE OTHER REALLY COOL THING: Harry Hill?s early stand up comedy, before he became Mr. Family Entertainment Cabaret Act. I mourn for ?old Harry?. So do I. TV Burp is great, but I miss Stouffer, “and relax”, the Badger Parade, and regular viewer Bunty Hoven. Just to clarify, I adore TV Burp; I was talking specifically about his pre-Channel 4 show stand-up, when he didn’t have a full band, a stream of costumed/puppet characters, myriad of songs… when he was a lot more unpredictable and manic and even a bit near the knuckle on occasion. I loved that manic Harry with the mad look in his eye when you never knew what was coming next, when his surreal act consisted almost solely of words and not endless walk-ons from Bert Kwouk and Al Murray, badgers, Savlon… all the running jokes he built up on his Channel 4 show… Check out Harry Hill Live! (1995?) and Harry Hill: Man Alive (1997?) if you are able to. Stouffer’s there, and his ‘tiny son’ Alan Hill, but that’s it. The rest is just wildly surreal and bizarre stream of seemingly random statements that eventually pay-off in running gags or the last quarter ’round-up’ of callbacks and punchlines… just brilliant. I don’t hate anything post-C4… First Class Scamp, Hooves and the third one that I can’t recall at this moment are all good entertainment… but I miss vintage Harry. October 4, 2009 at 11:31 pm #104030 CarlitoParticipant Birdstrike… that’s the other one. “Those Variety packs of cereal you get… there’s two boxes of Coco Pops, isn’t there? Hmm? Where’s the variety in that?” “My grandmother’s got false teeth. Hmm. My grandmother’s got false teeth… so how can I believe a word she says? Eh?” Love it. October 5, 2009 at 1:36 pm #104045 Seb PatrickKeymaster It’s because you don’t tend to think of “myriad” as being a number, but rather as a collective noun. However, etymologically… it’s a number, and should be used in the same way as “million” or “thousand”. Common mistake, though.
