Well, the shit’s hit the fan. And now Blockbuster, too.

For anyone that’s got an HMV gift card and now can’t use it:

HMV Gift Cards – Your Options

Apparently, digital downloads accounted for 76% of music sales last year, compared to 7% in 2002. With figures like that, what chance did HMV stand?

I used to spend more money in HMV when I could go in and buy singles. Buying CD1 and CD2 of the latest singles from the likes of Mansun or Terrorvision 15 years ago…I could’ve kept them afloat myself.

The HMV in Luton seemed to be having year-’round sales on DVDs from 2003 until my last visit ti the UK in 2009, so Glod knows how they were ever keeping themselves afloat.

Mansun were amazing IMHO. Bought the albums from HMV and then spent years collecting all the singles on Amazon. B sides are amazing.

I’ve blogged all about this, like all good hipsters (yeah right!) do these days.

Not particularly sad for HMV but am sad for those who will lose their jobs and the high street in general. It’s a tumultuous time to be a music/film/tv fan especially if you cling to physical media.

Selfishly, I just don’t know where to spend my lunchtimes now! Although I thank my lucky stars that I spent my HMV vouchers on Monday before they pulled the shutters down.

I’m not particularly sad for HMV either. They were part of the trend that killed (or seriously wounded) independent music shops before them.
And until the internet came along they were an absolute R.I.P. Off!
    (Rip off)…
I’m not sad for the workers either… they could go out and become a stripper or something. Right Mr. Tebbit?!

Their own on-line store was cheaper, sometimes considerably so, than their retail outlets.

A while back Marillion released re-mastered double CD versions of all the classic pre-’89 albums, they we’re £18.99 each in HMV but £14.99 from HMV’s website.
I got them elsewhere on-line around the same time for £7.99 a piece.

They were an appalling business that simply failed to remain even vaguely competitive, and thought iPod accesories and Novelty headphones would save them, good riddance.

As even my old man shops on-line now and he’s 82, I fully expect other overly pricey high street chains such as Argos to follow suit, and who the hell pays WH Smith’s prices for books?!

“who the hell pays WH Smith’s prices for books?!”

As far as books are concerned, WHSmith are a ripoff. Waterstone’s have at least got rid of the 3 for 2 offers on books. When times are hard, people want to be able to buy one thing cheaply, not have to buy something else to get it cheap.

    Frankly, thank God for Amazon.

I blame myself, I really do. i should never have bought my RDX DVD from Amazon.

On the topic of Mansun….yeah, I have a load of the singles too.

I only got into Mansun to impress a girl. She never went out with me, sadly (no shit). Though I went to see Mansun live twice – with her – and met the band at an aftershow party. One of my fave bands ever, so many happy memories from that time. :)
