a Youtube channel called Gallifrey Gals (2 American women who review/react to Dr Who and Star Trek) is currently doing Dwarf and they used the writers strike to go fast through the first 4 series in the past few weeks.

They just did Dimension Jump and they said they miss the bigger focus on Rimmer that series 1 and 2 had, and one of them said they miss the Rimmer Salute and asked when he does it again.

Google says they did it in Ace’s funeral in Stoke, and I remember it has some big moments in 8, but does it happen in 5 or 6?

Can’t think of any occurrences in V or VI. Does he do it much in the Dave era? I can only think of this from Skipper.

It would make sense for him to salute Katerina, Captain Herring, possibly others.

I think in Herring’s case, he’d probably just tell him he saluted rather than actually do it.

The characters were constantly developing in the writing and performance, so a lot of their early traits were dropped across the bubble years before the series started to look back nostalgically from VII and mainly VIII onwards. Rimmer also doesn’t obsess about aliens after series 2 and doesn’t seem to have the exaggerated geeky interests before IV.

He seems to genuinely believe it might he aliens about to return Glenn Miller in ‘D.N.A’, but seems weirdly blasé about it, as opposed to the foaming excitement he has in eps like ‘Waiting For God’ and ‘Thanks For The Memory’.

The nonchalance could be read as he doesn’t really think it’s aliens, and is just having a bit of a laugh, but that would arguably be just as out of character.

Early Rimmer seems the type to get sucked in to conspiracy theories* and conspiracy theorists tend to leap from one to another as they go deeper down the rabbit hole. My theory is that Rimmer’s genuine glee at the possibility of aliens got him into various mad ideas about them that made him see them in a more negative light over the years, such as returning celebrities like Glenn Miller. And so the Rimmer in DNA is still interested in aliens, but his relationship with that fascination has evolved.

It does feel a little strange the salute doesn’t make an appearance in Officer Rimmer.

“dyin’!” BOOM – the monster’s arms all give the salute as it melts to the ground

Doesn’t Rimmer demonstrate his salute to Kochanski in the flashback scene in Ouroborous?

Child Rimmer in the dormitory does the salute to Adult Rimmer (who does it back in response) in Timeslides.
