Hello, I’m Professor Flibble, I’ve already sort of integrated myself into the forum but thought I’d properly introduce myself!

Been a massive fan of both Red Dwarf and Doctor Who all my life. My dad got me into both when I was little. I shared a lot of interests with him, but he suddenly passed a couple of years ago and it’s been very difficult.

The lack of new episodes from either is very much getting to me right now. Though I hope Doug is able to make a deal with the BBC.


My favourite Red Dwarf episode is Quarantine, (is that a surprise?) with Meltdown close behind. Never understood the fan consensus on Meltdown, really, I’ve always loved it. My comfort era of Dwarf is Series III-V, which isn’t uncommon obviously. I don’t have a favourite from the main lot but I think I have favourite versions of them? Again, how they were all depicted in from 1989 to about 1993. My favourite bunkroom set is the III-V one. Kryten’s best mask is the Series V one. And…just take it as read, I like III-V. I do also group VI in as part of that era even though it’s got something different going on.


I’ve never personally met any of the cast members but my dad did get Danny John-Jules to sign a picture for my 9th birthday, which obviously made 9 year old me very happy. I’m still hoping to get a Mr Flibble puppet if it ever becomes cheap enough. I generally want to get into puppetry anyway, it’s a bit of a dying art at the moment. 


I was born when the first few DVDs were being released, so those were what I grew up with. The “byte” VHS releases being a bit before my time. I also grew up with the Classic Series of Doctor Who on DVD, at the same time David Tennant, Matt Smith, etc were doing their thing on TV, meaning I had equal exposure to both and I still prefer the Classic Series. My favourite story is The Curse of Peladon, I think it’s just the perfect Doctor Who story. Plenty of monsters, Ice Warriors, fantastic worldbuilding, a lovely model sequence with the TARDIS falling down a cliff, a nicely paced four episodes and it’s the Doctor stumbling into a high stakes situation. My favourite Doctor switches between Patrick Troughton and Sylvester McCoy, with Matt Smith being my favourite of the revival Doctors, and Series 5 for me being the pinnacle of the revival. I’m a bit of a Doctor Who traditionalist, I like it to be four episodes, cliffhangers, the 70s theme tune, face in the title sequence, white roundel TARDIS console room etc.

I notice there’s an appreciation for Sonic the Hedgehog here too. I’m still relatively a newcomer, but I’ve recently binged the mainline games (about 27 of them?) cause my best mate is a big fan of it. 

I’m terrible at making introduction posts because I always miss one or two or three things. But it’s nice to meet you all!

When it comes to Dwarf, I’m not a purist. Most of the seasons are so distinct in style and tone that I find there are things to appreciate in all of them, even VIII. But my heart belongs to Series II, that’s my comfort era and favourite bunkroom. I always loved the level of detail put into it, and how well defined all the characters and their relationships were. Favourite episodes would be anything from II, Meltdown, Holoship, Psirens, Fathers and Suns. 

I grew up watching New Who, but started binging the entire classic run during the Capaldi years and immediately became more affectionate towards it. I have a strong preference for the stagey, slower writing style. There’s something more tangible and real about it, especially in the 1960s. Hartnell and Troughton are absolute favourites. Pertwee is old reliable, never had a truly bad story. I like Tom, but not in the Williams era. Davison is great, but I think he only found his groove in his final season. Colin is not for me. Sylvester is somewhat limited as an actor, but the material he got was fantastic and he made it work for him. My favourite story is the War Games (and Parting of the Ways for New Who).

Actually, I will say I do find Doug’s attempts to reinvent the format with each series fascinating. I love the Series III-V vibe but if the entire show did that, I guess I wouldn’t have the attempts to stray from it exist so I can moan about them.

Tbf, Me² is probably my favourite of Series I. Love Rimmer arguing with himself, and the gazpacho soup revelation.

Not all that right wing, he was one of those Aggressively Centrist people. Nothing wrong with his sincerely held beliefs, he was just really weird about them.
