I’m never quite sure whether to give credit to the director or Cinematographer for the choice of angles, mood and style, but either way whoever was responsible deserves credit for the originality present in this film. Given that the same applies at times to the script, I’ll gamble on the director (Tomas Alfredson). I’ll not give too much away, because it’s really worth seeing for yourselves, but it’s particularly clever how most of the genre cliches are played out in authentic and yet original ways. The soundtrack was great too. Creator Topic Viewing 11 replies - 1 through 11 (of 11 total) Author Replies April 17, 2009 at 8:57 am #97252 Zombie Jim UndeadParticipant Saw it the other day. Thought it was a bit overrated….pacing is a bit odd. Drags at times. But, as you say, it’s occasionally beautiful in an understated way. Surprisingly sweet, quiet and dreamy sort of film, with moments of extreme violence. April 17, 2009 at 9:12 am #97257 Tarka DalParticipant > Saw it the other day. Thought it was a bit overrated?.pacing is a bit odd. Drags at times. Yeah I’d say that’s justified. Although for me the good bits outweighed, if not outnumbered, the slower scenes. It’s quite odd how you find yourself routing for what effectively is a mass-murderer. It’s not like any of the victims are hugely unlikeable. Loved the ending, although it didn’t quite add up and makes you asks questions about yourself given there wasn’t an awful lot in that scene that wasn’t on the face of it horrific. April 17, 2009 at 9:38 am #97260 NoFroParticipant I read about this film the other day. Am wanting to see it at some point. Will put it on the old lovefilm list. Oh, and Blade Runner has just arrived in the post. I’ve heard that… *SPOILERS* *SPOILERS* *SPOOOOOIIIIILERSSSSS* on the DVD commentary, the director says that the entire ending is the boy’s death hallucination / fantasy. April 17, 2009 at 12:29 pm #97284 Tarka DalParticipant Ah! That fits and is damn clever, although :( April 17, 2009 at 12:39 pm #97285 Zombie Jim UndeadParticipant Exactly. Like the end of Pan’s Labyrinth…it makes sense that it’s just a fantasy but….it’s just too damend sad to accept it as such. April 17, 2009 at 1:35 pm #97292 ChrisMParticipant That website made my IE spawn new windows in an infinite loop. (Stuff like that reminds me why I usually use Firefox. I switched to IE lately as my Firefox kept playing up too.) Anyway, doing a virus scan now, just be warned… you might want to do the same. Interesting looking film, I’ve seen it advertised. April 17, 2009 at 1:51 pm #97294 ChrisMParticipant Maybe. It’s happened before with other sites certainly but only every now and again. An IE issue on my PC no doubt, I just wonder what triggers it. My AV scans find no fault although the current one is still running. (I have the usual AV daemons running in the background anyway.) Firefox, strangely has other issues, like not opening windows at all, even when I want it to! I think I’ll try another browser. April 17, 2009 at 2:45 pm #97298 Tarka DalParticipant > Exactly. Like the end of Pan?s Labyrinth I was a little dissapointed with Pan’s Labyrinth. Although that’s probably because I’d had it built up to an unrealistic level beforehand. ‘Right One’ I had only a brief knowledge of – A mention in SFX a while ago, a glowing review on Film (with Wossy) and hey presto… great things. Less defintely seems more when going to see films. Redbelt and Doomsday were amongst my favourite films of last year and both were spur of the moment choices. April 17, 2009 at 3:24 pm #97300 Zombie Jim UndeadParticipant Same here – I knew nothing of it. Had only glanced over the review in SFX. I was actually expecting it to be more of a fantasy / horror film, which may have coloured my reaction.
