Probably not worth a post but, hey, what the hell.

Emily Marsh is the new host of Mystery Science Theater 3000, playing Emily Connor. I haven’t seen any of her episodes yet (I think they’re available in some members-only streaming thing I haven’t looked into?) but I’ve seen her in a few shorts and live events and such, and she was great in all of those. I look forward to, y’know, actually seeing an episode at some point.

Anyway, a few nights ago she posted a story on Instagram showing a clip of The End (the chicken soup machine repair scene) and captioned it with something like, “Unwinding with my other favorite show set in space.”

I saw it and thought it was neat but didn’t think to grab a screenshot until now, and it looks like it’s already gone. Or maybe it isn’t. I’m very old and I don’t understand social media. I just thought it was cool. I didn’t think it was cool until it was too late to grab a screenshot, though. OOPS.

That’s quite cool to hear. I’ve seen some episodes of MST3K and I definitely enjoyed them, but due to the hefty per episode time investment and the limited availability, it never became more than a casual interest for me.

    That meme is fucking brilliant.

The first three episodes are available just as of recently to everyone, as far as I know. I saw them early and can vouch that they’re quite good. Jonah’s crew are in the first two then Emily’s in the third (featuring a female Crow, which works all too well). There was even a literal SEGA Dreamcast in one host segment, because finally MY childhood is what they’re referencing instead of just my dad’s. It’s magic.

That’s great to know! Thank you. I thought Jonah’s first season was a bit rough but he really hit his stride in his second season…at which point Netflix killed it, of course. Very glad to know that this season has come out well and that he’s getting more room to settle in. Emily has been great in the bits that I’ve seen so I’m particularly excited for whatever episodes she ends up hosting.

And thank you to the memes for justifying the existence of this thread. I knew I could count on you.

It felt very season 12 to me, and I agree that Netflix killed it right when it was finding its feet. Although season 11’s Avalanche was an instant classic to me.

13.01 doesn’t have the overabundance of singing riffs so that’s a plus. It also doesn’t have Santo wrestling Drácula so aboo.

I do reccomend the Gizmoplex app. You have to register, but once you do you have free access to all the old episodes and the option to pay for the new episodes coming out. A large chunk of episodes are missing due to rights issues, but it’s nice to see some episodes in all their glory after only being able to watch them as grainy VHS transfers on YouTube.

Ooh, Gizmoplex. OK, that’s pretty cool. Quite a stark contrast between “watch all classic seasons for free without ads” and “pay $8 for each episode” but they’re indie, so fair enough. Kind of funny that they made all the limited/backer exclusive packages absurdly expensive instead of making them non-purchasable.

Also, hey – they stole G&T’s idea!

Yeah, I’m cutting them a bit of slack there as it’s really just them doing their own thing, built using only donations and goodwill. Not to mention all the hoops they’ll have had to jump through to get clearence rights for some films.

Do the Blackadder and Count Duckula reffs/rifs land for US audiences? And Red Dwarf riffs when?

I haven’t seen the new episodes so I don’t know how specific the references are, but Blackadder is well-enough known here that they probably do land. Count Duckula depends; it aired regularly here when I was a kid (on Nickelodeon, I think?), but I don’t know how long it actually stayed in rotation. I didn’t even know it was an import until much later! I don’t have an answer for your Red Dwarf riff question, though. Maybe someone can ask the AI writer bot.
