I don’t know if anyone else heard about it? This is probably the crux of it. He’s really good and people have always wanted him to have more of a shot at the role, and at a time when the show is in flux and it might be hard to get any actor to commit to being the next Doctor given the uncertainty, a throwback with an old Doctor who can still credibly play the role (and who isn’t David Tennant again) might be the best way of plugging that gap. November 12, 2025 at 11:53 am #313378 RidleyParticipant Narratively useful that his screen time is next to zero too. November 12, 2025 at 8:03 pm #313389 sleepeyParticipant Maybe he’s doing the CBeebies thing? The original post just said he’s “acting”, could be voice acting November 12, 2025 at 8:41 pm #313390 Renegade RobParticipant Paul McGann would be a fantastic Sixteenth Doctor though. And later on, an excellent Twenty-fourth Doctor. Every eighth Doctor should be Paul McGann, really. December 16, 2025 at 8:35 pm #314807 DaveParticipant Has anyone else been watching The War Between The Land And The Sea? It’s four episodes in now with just one to go (this Sunday). I think RTD should be embarrassed by this series. Because it’s written by someone else and it’s head and shoulders above what he’s been doing with the main Doctor Who show for the past couple of years. It’s still not amazing top-tier TV, but it’s telling an engaging story in an entertaining way, with good performances and makeup/effects and some interesting ideas at the heart of it. It also manages to incorporate progressive aspects (particularly when it comes to environmental stuff) without beating you over the head with it or being overly blunt. Even Russell Tovey is likeable in it! I wish Doctor Who had been more like this for the past couple of years. December 16, 2025 at 10:42 pm #314809 Ben SaundersParticipant I watched the first two episodes, and they weren’t enough to convince me to keep watching. But I might tune in if everybody says it’s amazing or something. So far it’s a lot of standing around, and someone said if they really did that to the sea then millions of people would probably die, which I believe based on almost nothing. December 16, 2025 at 10:44 pm #314810 Ben SaundersParticipant Also, everybody is unbearably smug, in a really offputting way. Kate Stewart is smug, Salt is smug, UNIT are all smug. Smug. Smug smug smug smug smug. December 16, 2025 at 10:45 pm #314811 RushyParticipant Also, everybody is unbearably smug, in a really offputting way. Kate Stewart is smug, Salt is smug, UNIT are all smug. December 17, 2025 at 9:04 am #314824 WarbodogParticipant New Who and post-2017 Trek in a nutshell really And pre-2017 Trek. December 17, 2025 at 11:56 am #314825 Ian SymesKeymaster I’ve only watched the first two episodes, has Russell Tovey shagged the big fish yet? December 17, 2025 at 12:34 pm #314826 DaveParticipant I’ve only watched the first two episodes, has Russell Tovey shagged the big fish yet? That’s no way to talk about Kate etc. December 17, 2025 at 3:10 pm #314833 Nick RParticipant I’ve only watched the first two episodes, has Russell Tovey shagged the big fish yet? I don’t know, but he has shagged (worked with) the Big Fi(ni)sh. December 17, 2025 at 3:16 pm #314834 DaveParticipant I’ll be delighted if this entire miniseries ends up as an origin story for Jim the Fish. December 21, 2025 at 11:07 pm #314913 DaveParticipant Unfortunately the fifth and final episode was terrible. Felt like a different show entirely and threw away all the potential of the preceding episodes. What a shame. December 24, 2025 at 3:31 am #314936 Ben SaundersParticipant “We got owned… we got rusted” and the whole bit leading up to that had me saying “ooohhhhhhhh nnnooooooooo” out loud. I haven’t seen cringe like this in a long time. December 24, 2025 at 4:40 am #314937 Ben SaundersParticipant Listen, I’m not saying the Sea Devils got what was coming to them, but… Episode four was my favourite, because for a very brief moment it felt like the show wasn’t being so bloody self-important and serious. Episode five didn’t feel much different to me in the way Dave says, although I do have to ask why Doctor Who/TWBTLATS is so bad at the “emotional ending set to pop music” thing that American shows are often so good at. It was shit in Rosa and it’s shit here. There was a line where Barclay’s mate said “she’s sushi mate”, and I genuinely thought he meant it like she’s fit/sexy, but I think he actually meant she’s dead. December 24, 2025 at 4:43 am #314938 Ben SaundersParticipant Kate Stewart is insane. She should be locked up. She’s a danger to herself and others. December 27, 2025 at 1:19 am #314995 Ben SaundersParticipant This guy is awful. Generic character, generic dialogue, and I can’t tell if that’s his real accent, but it better be otherwise idk what he thinks he’s doing. December 27, 2025 at 10:50 am #315001 RidleyParticipant Colin McFarlane has a pretty distinctive voice. December 27, 2025 at 11:34 am #315002 Ben SaundersParticipant Well he’s at least a little less wooden there December 27, 2025 at 12:46 pm #315003 DaveParticipant Yeah, I remembered him from The Fast Show too. I’m sure he’s cropped up in other stuff, always very recognisable. December 27, 2025 at 9:56 pm #315007 Spaceworm JimParticipant He’s in The Dark Knight, isn’t he? Drinks himself to death. December 28, 2025 at 7:12 am #315012 WarbodogParticipant He’s in one of the better post-Quentin Jonathan Creeks too, but I did first think of the Fast Show. December 31, 2025 at 11:13 am #315080 RushyParticipant And pre-2017 Trek. I like the Abrams films. If that’s what you’re referring to? Early TNG’s enlightened arrogance was the first thing to spring to mind, because I’ve been trying to watch it again. December 31, 2025 at 12:25 pm #315083 RushyParticipant Enlightened arrogance? Star Trek Beyond was okay I guess.
