Small Town, Big Story

A strange comedic drama by Chris O’Dowd on sky currently. The central theme being a film producer from LA returning to her childhood Irish home to film a historical drama on location in a town of eccentric locals. Where a doctor once jilted her as a teenager decades ago after they both got abducted briefly by aliens

Episode five see’s this brief moment where the author of the book being filmed, (played by Chris himself) sits idly at the airport with the film producer asks her ..

C: “What was the name of that programme used to be on, where they were living on a space ship for some reason?”

Runner: Star Trek?  

C: No 

R: Battlestar Galactica?

C: No (Dismissive) 

Long Pause 

Producer: “Are we getting more clues? Or are we just guessing now?”

C: Was one of them as Cat? maybe 

R: One of the Astronauts was a cat?


C: Yes 


P: Red Dwarf 


C; The very one, Good Woman Wendy. 


Long Pause, Chris looks at TV screen showing scenes of Scottish devotional Marches.

R: Are they bringing it back or something? 

C: No Idea. …   I was trying to remember the name of those stars that expand too quickly and explode violently, and diminish to a tiny rock in a vast abyss. … Now I know.   … (Looking at TV screen now showing a graphic of the UK breaking in a speculative four country’s) Cus that’s it now the British empire… a wee Red Dwarf. (Smirks) 

The scene then enters plot related dialogue ending with the producer walking offf annoyed after an airport tannoy. The scene ends thus as they follow. 

R: Why was it? … That he was a cat?

C: (Reflecting) … God Knows.

Yeah, after the explanation in the first episode and recaps in the next 10 episodes and reminders in several other episodes they never explain that, do they?
