The classic series on the other hand gives a mammoth amount of extras, infact the best DVD on my collection is ‘The Trial of a Time Lord’. January 16, 2009 at 4:10 pm #88838 p2p_productionsParticipant I wonder if some of the ‘new’ material in the Dave specials will be from the unfilmed Dwarf Movie script. I doubt it – especially since the script was for a big-budget movie and the specials are apparently being made on a shoestring. Plus didn’t Craig say recently that the movie was still a vague possibility? January 16, 2009 at 9:36 pm #88941 hummingbirdParticipant >Plus didn?t Craig say recently that the movie was still a vague possibility? He mentioned this in his recent Digital Spy interview. January 16, 2009 at 10:14 pm #88947 hummingbirdParticipant I saw that, but I didn’t think anything of it. January 16, 2009 at 11:27 pm #88966 CarlitoParticipant He simply used the expression “never say never” which then led Digital Spy to write a whole article with the headline “Craig Charles still wants Red Dwarf movie” or summat like that. They literally took a nothing remark and twisted it. Media for you, eh? I don’t think I missed the mark too much, considering I was going from the memory of reading the article once two weeks ago. I’d love to get a bunch of us on Skype to record a commentary together. I have the software and the means. All it’d take, really, is all of us pressing “Play” at the same time. January 18, 2009 at 3:24 pm #89055 Jonathan CappsKeymaster I think doing something like this would be great, but I’d have to make sure my house was ENTIRELY empty. January 18, 2009 at 3:31 pm #89057 Ian SymesKeymaster Because he would have to do it naked. January 18, 2009 at 6:47 pm #89083 PhilParticipant I have never seen the entirety of RDUSA #1 (that’s the one with the clips on Dwarfin’ USA, right?) but that won’t stop me from being a completely worthless addition to the commentary. The ‘My baseball cards must be worth a FORTUNE!’ line always makes me smile. The holograms are crap though, that whole “Ghandi in Space” thing…Awful. January 18, 2009 at 10:51 pm #89095 CarlitoParticipant Yeah I was thinking of the exit sign scene when I said Bobby had a couple good lines. And it’s nowhere near better than VIII. And you know it. January 19, 2009 at 12:07 am #89103 genericnerdyusernameParticipant My brother downloaded it ages ago, so I would be able to get you a copy if not for the fact that it’s so shit I deleted it immediately after watching it. January 19, 2009 at 8:20 am #89115 Pete Part ThreeParticipant >And it?s nowhere near better than VIII. And you know it. Do I? Hang on, wait a minute. No, I really don’t. If you want a wacky version of Red Dwarf, you might as well go for an episode that uses the basis of a decent script and story. January 19, 2009 at 10:41 am #89117 JamesTCParticipant Series VIII is miles better than the USA pilot, even the worst episode of Red Dwarf is alot better than the USA pilot, I’m looking at you Pete Part 2. January 19, 2009 at 10:58 am #89118 Pete Part ThreeParticipant Red Dwarf USA has a beginning, middle and a (rushed) end. Pete Part 2 is a sketch show with some shouting and humour that a 14 year old would label as infantile. Don’t get me wrong, Red Dwarf USA is shit but its shitness is excusable given that its an attempt by a bunch of newcomers (sans Robert) to reinvent the show for a US audience. Pete Part 2 does not have a similar get-out-clause. It’s just as hurried, has equally bad characterisation and is far messier as a narrative. And the Fire Exit joke is better than any line in Pete Part 2. January 19, 2009 at 4:31 pm #89129 JamesTCParticipant Don?t get me wrong, Red Dwarf USA is shit but its shitness is excusable given that its an attempt by a bunch of newcomers (sans Robert) to reinvent the show for a US audience. Pete Part 2 does not have a similar get-out-clause. It?s just as hurried, has equally bad characterisation and is far messier as a narrative. It has the get out clause that it was originally a one part episode and a second episode had to be rushed, instead of a rushed episode it had a padded two parter. And the Fire Exit joke is better than any line in Pete Part 2. I agree with that but it only had that and another joke about base ball cards which I found funny. January 19, 2009 at 4:39 pm #89130 Ian SymesKeymaster That’s two more jokes than Pete Part Two has going for it. January 19, 2009 at 4:47 pm #89131 Pete Part ThreeParticipant Kryten: (To Lister) He evolved from cats, sir, just as your distant ancestors once swung from trees. Rimmer: Ancestors? His grandparents swung from trees. __ Lister: Chris, you’re alive! I just got through sweeping you up! __ Cat: Is that what I think it is? Rimmer: What do you think it is? Cat: A big whirly thing in the corner of the room. >It has the get out clause that it was originally a one part episode and a second episode had to be rushed, instead of a rushed episode it had a padded two parter. Bearing in mind that Pete Part 2 was your example. Switch it for Only the Good if you must. January 19, 2009 at 4:49 pm #89134 JamesTCParticipant I mentioned Pete Part 2 because I consider it the worst episode or Red Dwarf, still find it much funnier than the USA pilot. January 19, 2009 at 5:06 pm #89137 NitroChrisUKParticipant pete part 2 was awefull for dwarf standards and the usa pilot was shite as peopel have said apart from the fire exit joke and the line about the baseball cards being worth a furtune .. the actors playing the charactors are shit (especially there version of rimmer ) not counting robert ovc pete part 2 and only the good feel like rushed ” weve run out of budget creating a dancing robot and a dinosour ” when i think the budget should have been saved for an end of series spectacular .. but owell cant be changed now January 19, 2009 at 5:07 pm #89138 Jonathan CappsKeymaster Yeah, no, the mask looks pony. January 19, 2009 at 7:32 pm #89146 Pete Part ThreeParticipant >I mentioned Pete Part 2 because I consider it the worst episode or Red Dwarf, still find it much funnier than the USA pilot. Each to their own. I don’t think I’ve watched Red Dwarf VIII since the DVD came out (and only a few times on video before that), whereas Red Dwarf USA doesn’t annoy me nearly as much and is, at least a curiosity. A pile of shite, it may be…but in the spectrum of shite, it’s not without merit. Unfortunately, its reputation (and the fact that it’s a remake) precedes it. That’s what makes Dwarfin’ USA such a fascinating documentary. Doug says its not that bad, Danny trashes it (perhaps more to do with sour grapes, than an unbiased viewpoint). Ignoring the actual finished article; if you compare the script of USA to, lets say, Pete Part 2, I’d say the former is far superior. It’s horribly paced and far too busy (the presence of Kryten is at the expense of Rimmer) but there is a plot there. Unfortunately, we’ve never seen Linwood Boomer’s original script (according to Doug the finished version is a curious hybrid of that and Rob and Doug’s rewrite…which is at odds with Robert’s version of events in TMITRM). It would be interesting to see that and compare. The first episode of the US version of The Office is a virtual remake of Episode 1 of The Office UK. It’s bloody awful. However, when they left the constraints of remaking a show and did their own thing, the show became great. Maybe the same thing could have happened with Red Dwarf USA? The failure of it is more to do with the direction and the performances. An extra 5 pages and a dialogue polish, and it could have been pretty good. Pete Part 2, meanwhile, is doomed from the outset. It’s a lousy script and a fucking awful story. January 19, 2009 at 7:56 pm #89152 Jonathan CappsKeymaster > Unfortunately, we?ve never seen Linwood Boomer?s original script (according to Doug the finished version is a curious hybrid of that and Rob and Doug?s rewrite?which is at odds with Robert?s version of events in TMITRM). Wasn’t aware that it had ever seen the light of day. How does it differ, Ian? January 19, 2009 at 8:10 pm #89155 hummingbirdParticipant *sigh* wish there was some way that I could watch US RD January 19, 2009 at 8:14 pm #89157 Jonathan CappsKeymaster > Really? Wasn?t aware that it had ever seen the light of day. Don’t take my word as gospel, but I do believe it’s Boomer’s first draft. It certainly has ‘First Draft’ on the front, anyway.
