Overall she liked VI more than V though, as she found that series too dark.

As in the tone, or the lighting?

VI is still plenty dark, but it has the rapid fire gags.

Mine had no reaction when I tried out White Fucking Hole, despite liking loads of sci-fi AND sitcoms, so I gave the fuck up.

Quite a lot of White Hole depends on already being a fan, really. In bad and good ways.

    #296690

Yeah, probably best to try with The Inquisitor or Future Echoes

I think Camille is underrated as a good entry point for new viewers. You get a good sci-fi comedy story that’s very heavily rooted in character and which has great moments for all four of the core cast and is very funny – but also, everything you need to know to understand it is provided within the episode itself.

Terrorform was on Dave one afternoon and the five of us that were hanging out all seemed to enjoy it. But two of us were already familiar with the show.

Among all the many, many issues with Pete Part I, somehow I always find myself most irritated by the fact that a quadratic equation is not actually particularly hard.

Well, for Rimmer they probably are, given his long tradition of melting down on astronavigation exams

I used to wonder… exactly how difficult is the astro nav exam for a self taught layman like Ole-Iron-Balls? Is he actually capable (of either the exam or the post), in terms of intelligence and cognition, if he just conquered his nerves?

Given that we see (in The End) at least five people, of 169 on the ship, taking the exam – and with plenty more of those 169 already being officers – we can probably assume that it’s a reasonably achievable qualification for someone of average intelligence like Rimmer.

It feels like a it’s a basic cert you need to have but one that’s relatively easy to obtain. A bit like doing a theory test before the practical driving exam

You definitely stole using The Inquisitor as an introduction from me. I’ve seen success with introducing people to the show with it. Here’s why I argue it’s a good starting point:

    (1) Peak high concept sci-fi writing, one of the show’s best premises.

    (2) The episode (especially in the trial scenes, but not only there) does a good job of introducing the basics of every character in a way that a new audience member could easily latch onto.

    (3) It’s one of the best looking episodes in the whole show.

It’s also the first episode I remember catching, so it definitely works.

Queeg and Marooned were the first 2 eps I saw. I think I picked up pretty quickly that Lister was the regular/relatable guy, Rimmer was the uptight nerdy one, and they were lost in space. I didn’t need much more background info to enjoy more.

Clearly the best entry point for Red Dwarf is Back In The Red Part 3.

I was going to say this, I’ve talked before about how The Inquisitor isn’t the most comedic episode. It’s quite bleak throughout but it does have some very good gags, fairly spaced out. Also, possibly controversial but I don’t like the little “reality patrol” dance he does, young me just didn’t get it and old me is thinking it’s actually pretty shit.

Also, young me never understood why Kryten was so disgusted with Lister when he said “I can give you fifteen”, because I assumed he picked up one of the other Kryten’s hands, since those come off anyway.

    #296781

I’d always thought it was the other Lister’s hand.

Unfortunately pre-teen me didn’t have the technology of the Smega Drive or a Blu-Ray at his disposal, and only had a fuzzy off-air VHS recording. So I assumed it was just Kryten’s hand, given that in the very same series Kryten removes his own hand with ease and it isn’t a big deal.

I’ve shared this before but as a kid I absolutely did not make the connection between the hand and the exploded Lister so I just blankly accepted that Lister carries around a severed hand in his jacket.

Anyone else notice that the Dave era is no longer on iPlayer? Its vanished just as the GGs reached it – which is a shame as I’d hoped a lot of their “I’ve never seen the new stuff” commentators would give them a go.

ps… I’m so glad they’re nearly beyond S8. It’s not nice watching them deal with Krytie TV and Pete.

Oh. Will any new Red Dwarf now be the U era?

Well we didn’t call it the UKTV era before, and the actual channel is called “U&Dave”, right?

So it will be called “the U&Dave era”.

Or, “the Dave era” for short.

I mean, I assume GG will still be posting reactions for the Dave era, as they seem interested in continuing and they won’t have been watching it on iPlayer in the States.

(Couldn’t tell whether that was the point you were trying to make)

I think the point was hoping that UK based followers of GG might be inspired to actually watch the Dave stuff, if they hadn’t previously, and lack of availability would scupper that

If they’re watching the reactions, hopefully they’ll see the 60% or whatever of the episode that is included and think “hey, this is actually decent!” and seek out the boxsets or something.

Yeah, sorry, I meant I’m sad that UK viewers who haven’t watched the newer stuff won’t have it on iPlayer.

But as someone said, hopefully seeing the Gal’s watch an episode and enjoy it might be enough to draw people to grabbing a DVD etc.

    #296921

I’m just glad that, being able to look past the shallowness of VIII and enjoying it as a goofy comedy, even they couldn’t get past the absolute mess that is Pete Part II. The post-episode chat starts with “that wasn’t the best” and ends with really negative comments. Wonder how well they’ll fare with Only the Good…

I remember a review of it in BTL that said it should be called “Only The Good Bits Are In the First 20 Minutes”. I imagine they’ll feel along those lines.

I’m watching the GG’s do “only the good”, and before that I watched music reviewer Spectrum Pulse’s new epic 3 hour examination of the current music industry, streaming and vinyl issues. And in both videos…I saw the likes going up in real time. I didn’t know you could see that.

This is going to pay off brilliantly once they make it to Skipper.

    #297059

I’m really curious to see how they react to BtE coming straight off that. They seemed to find Only the Good quite funny but narratively spotty, unsurprisingly, but the tonal whiplash of going straight in to BtE will be really interesting.

They’re wrong, obviously, but I can see why they’ve come to that conclusion. They’ve seen Mac’s handful of pre-VIII appearances, in which he was almost entirely the straight man, precisely once each, so all they’re judging him on is what they’ve just seen in the last few weeks. Their criticisms are valid, especially after watching Pete (Part Two) which feels like half the running time is Mac saying the same few lines over and over again quite slowly. “The Series VIII version of Captain Hollister doesn’t work” is something I’d definitely agree with, it’s just that they’re seemingly blaming the actor rather than the writing.

Series 1 and 2 treat Hollister like a rounded character.

Series VIII treats him like a round character.
