Maybe he banged his head in the crash

Although Lister goes to great pains to remind everyone he’s had 6 years of adventuring and is much better equipped to deal with stuff than the crew is.

    OR….

and I can only apologise in advance for what I’m about to say

… maybe the nanobots did more than just rebuilt his arm but rebuilt his entire body and brain to match the version of himself that existed prior to the radiation leak, which would explain why he has also reverted to his series 1 self and would, of course, mean the last time we saw the “real” Lister was at the end of series 7….

    #296250

Yeah, I mean it’s obvious that Doug is trying to go for ‘classic’ Lister or something, but he just misses the mark by quite a margin by turning him into a full on idiot. Lister always lacked knowledge, not understanding.

I remember the dot to dot puzzle being infuriating on first broadcast. At no point was Lister ever that stupid. His pride and excitement at finishing and realising it’s a bucket and spade still haunts me today.

Lister is written as a Dougal-level idiot for some reason. Only a series ago he was comfortably explaining time paradoxes so complex they blew up cameras, and now he’s struggling to do a dot-to-dot.

I don’t mind it because it’s such a stupid throwaway joke, but I also like to assume he’s just doing it to wind Rimmer up.

I am sure this has been brought up, but did the nanobots resurrect George McIntyre?

Why did they rebuild the ship to the original design specification but still include the faulty drive plates? Are drive plates just something destined to fail?

Were holograms a common thing on Earth or did you only ever see them in places such as groovy, funky Channel 27?

Given we’re now entering the age of AI I’m sure this is going to have to be addressed sooner than later, but surely there are laws in place against this? Presumably Channel 27 don’t have to pay a hologram and there would be laws in place protecting living workers?

I can see a corporate studio looking at the pure profit from artificially generating a stable of on-air performers, unless they have to pay royalties to the hologram’s estate? In which case, surely there’s union rules against that sort of thing? Dead people don’t need to worry about the cost of living.

Thankfully the real world isn’t an awful dystopia in which dead actors would be made to act in new movies via horrible tasteless computer-generated recreations.

I think that was supposed to be Lister winding Rimmer up and Craig just played it straight.

To be fair, Carrie Fisher was still alive for Rogue One, and Helen Slater was (and still is) alive for The Flash, so it’s not just about bringing back dead people, it’s also about youthify-ing inconveniently aged people.

Hmm, actually that might be worse. I’ll need to think on it.

At least with Rogue One they still got actors to play those roles and just used CG to change the way they looked, I guess.

I didn’t make it through season 1. Not that I ever got around to all 170-odd episodes of TNG in the first place.

Picard season one was the most uninteresting thing I’ve ever forced myself to sit through, just dull, boring, tepid, shallow, loathsome, droll, sleep-inducing, yadda yadda. Genuinely piss poor. Never bothered with season 2, but everybody seems to agree that series 3 is a massive step-up (and is basically just TNG2), but I’ve already been burned once and can’t be bothered with it anymore.

The last time the real Picard appeared was in Encounter at Farpoint (he died when he took the transporter for the first time).

I enjoyed Picard Season One. I was shocked when I got online and discovered that it disrespects all the lore, is badly written, and that I was stupid (and forgetful of TNG’s lore) to like it. I didn’t love all of it, the “Picard and Data have a deep father son friendship” retcon has never been my thing, but I thought it was an interesting little spin on what an old Picard could have been up to. Having typed all that, I did think the girl being “Data’s daughter” was silly (when he already had one in the show), and I thought the whole thing with the world banning androids and the Romulans making it happen based on some prediction was a bit forced and silly. And Picard dying and being reborn as a robot, with a Principal Skinner “no one will ever again mention that he’s a robot now” thing was a bit dum. But I did enjoy a lot of the episodes and premise, and I liked the borg stuff, and the Romulan warrior guy.

so…ridiculously… the last time we see the real Picard is his death at the end of Season One of Picard. After that he’s an android. hm

    #296277

I haven’t seen any of Picard but the one clip I did see from Season 3 indicated that his death and status as an android is a big plot point that they just conveniently forgot for the whole of Season 2

I kinda like that at some point Kat off of the Gallifreys Gals is inevitably going to find this thread and have to wade through utter shash to get to any comment about their show (hai there) but it’s all nerd shash as opposed to *waves hand vaguely in direction of YouTube*

Dead people don’t need to worry about the cost of living.

I feel in Red Dwarf this would be the slogan of some scheme where you spend your life paying off your future hologram.

well, they watch TNG too so it is vaguely relevant I suppose. Personally, I think Picard’s old age in “all good things” (the TNG series finale) is his “real” ending, and Picard 2020 is an “elseworlds timeline”. I need to rewatch TNG, I got the whole series on DVD for pennies from a charity shop

Yes, give me that Star Trek crap!

I’ve been taking part in an epic Star Trek (re)Watch via another online forum that I like to make slightly worse with my presence (grcade.co.uk for anyone that is interested, tag line is “games + stuff” so if you’re interested in either of those feel free to drop by 😊)

Premise is to essentially consume all Star Trek TV and Film media, which as I’m sure we’re all aware is A LOT of content. We’ve so far made it through all of TOS, TAS, TNG, Movies 1-10, DS9, and VOY, and are now a season into ENT.

It’s been an enjoyable ride so far, I still think DS9 is the best of the shows even if TNG remains my favourite due to familiarity and nostalgia (sort of like why I can see that Series V is probably objectively the best of RD but VI will forever be my favourite as it was the first I properly watched). Voyager is actually better than I remember giving it credit for back in the day.

It’s been surprising going back through them and seeing how many points of similarity and connection there are with RD though – I guess with the length and history of both shows it’s hard for there not to be crossover in themes and events at this point!

Do rewatches ever alternate shows by airdate, or just stick to series blocks for consistency? I know there’s barely any crossover because it’s the 90s, but you’d get the sense of where the franchise was at each year, rather than jumping back each time. CGI getting more ambitious, the Borg showing up in Voyager after First Contact etc.

I planned on doing this for TNG/DS9/VOY but felt like it was too complicated to bother with (as in, it took any amount of effort). It would be interesting I guess, although DS9 is somewhat serialised so it benefits from watching it as one thing imo.

I essentially binge-watched all of TOS/TNG/DS9 and the movies, and by the time I got to VOY I was sick to death of Star Trek and needed desperately to watch something else, so I gave up on it pretty quickly. I’ll go back to it some day.

I followed production from 1998, so Voyager Borg and Dominion War were contemporaneously exciting developments, Insurrection’s associated with the winding down of DS9, then there was only Voyager. Bringing in The Rock and pissing about with rustic Ireland and Borg kids n shit.

Also, a hologram chef might be useful. If they’re
like head chef and can create dish and run a kitchen have have everyone
    else do the actual work.

I highly doubt Petersen was head chef though. Unless he did in fact have hidden depths we did not know about.

I’ve been watching it all for the first time and DS9 was my least favourite series, though after about 4 seasons I did start to enjoy it more. I really loved season 1 of Voyager, probably because of the “crew trapped on a small ship” element which is apparently something I go for.

I also skipped forward and watched Lower Decks and that is honestly some of my favourite Trek thus far!

I really like Lower Decks! It’s a bit “zany” which can sometimes ride the line close but I enjoy that it’s doing something a bit off kilter in the Trek universe whilst also managing to stay surprisingly true to the history and values of what has come before.

I enjoyed Voyager a lot but I think I’ll always be sad that they didn’t do more with the premise. There was potential for a really great exploration of what it really felt like to be alone, separated from all the support that the fleet usually get. But sadly it’s rare that they feel any genuine consequences of their situation.

    #296404

At its best, Voyager is great, but so much of it feels very tired to me. Lots of stories that could have been done better in TNG, and a lot of non-entity characters. I wouldn’t want it to be as heavily serialised as DS9, but there are way too many ‘huge’ plots which get resolved quickly and forgotten about; instead, I’d love it if you had things like Tuvix being around for a few episodes as a standard crew member before that plot resolves; they tried it with Seska, and Paris’s demotion, but they felt very undercooked. TNG has them going on missions, so the structure makes sense, but Voyager’s journey home format makes the “then this happened then this happened then this happened” structure stand out awkwardly.

to be fair, bad Red Dwarf is nowhere near as bad as Red Dwarf fans think it is  casual audiences hear a shit joke and move on with their lives, fans are still arguing about it 30 years later (it’s me I’m fans)

    #296625

Yeah, a lot of the issues with VIII especially come from people who have an emotional investment in the show. Most of us can admit that even the worst Dwarf has a fair few good jokes, but it lacks the magic touch that makes us adore the programme. If you’re new to it, it’s not so hard to make the most of a bad episode and move on.

(that said, on first watch my girlfriend thought VI was awful and VII unwatchable, so it also depends how picky the person is)

Even if I was new to Red Dwarf, experience has made me hypersensitive to when a show feels like it’s passed its would be better if it had stopped before now threshold and knowing that I’m damaging my overall appreciation by carrying on, so I‘d be really bummed out by this point, if I‘d even stuck with it.

But that‘s different to this odd public way of watching a show and trying to entertain people while opening yourself to real-time judgment of your every reaction and opinion. There‘d be more considerations distracting you and encouraging you to look on the bright side, or you could find yourself stuck in a job you no longer enjoy.

For what its worth, my fiance hates all the Cat’s smelling gags in VI. Then again, she’s the person who put Back to Earth Part II as her all time favourite which bumped it up a slot in the Silver Survey (now you know). Still, she’s down on VII and VIII too, but is good with the Dave era.

I think the bigger question now is how the Gals’ will react to the status quo re-set in Back to Earth. As hardcore fans we are just relieved to see things back to normal and are willing to headcanon it back together (e.g. Karnie’s Homecoming), but I have often wondered how jarring “nine years later” is to a casual.

Mind you I don’t really rate VI either, so I’m in no rush to forcibly correct her. It’s The Fast Show I’m planning on using when I make her sit and enjoy something she hates.
