In ‘The Inquisitor’, Kryten’s line “we have to go!” (to Lister, as they escape from the Inquisitor after the judgement sequence) sounds exactly like his overdubbed “we have to go!” in ‘Back To Reality’ as they flee the Esperanto. I know that the Esperanto sequence was cut down a bit to help fit the episode to length, so did they just bung Kryten’s dialogue from the earlier episode over the top to paper over the cracks and add a bit of urgency? Apologies if this has come up before and I missed it. This isn’t Star Trek. I mean, the joke is pretty clearly that JMC are blindly applying human gendering to mechanoids, so the absurd idea of them applying this classification technique only to robots and letting humans self-identify just can’t be what the episode was going for. It’s a headcanon wriggle-out. Unless I’m forgetting a bit where Kryten says something like “In your time, all mechanoids were explicitly boys or girls – boy mechanoids were all designed with mechanical penises, and all girl mechanoids were designed with nothing. Yes, even cleaning and maintenance mechanoids.”, then that idea does not come across, nor could it plausibly be either Naylor or Alexander’s intent. (And even a clarification like that would still suggest that society at large was transphobic enough to enforce a cock-based gender binary onto robots, so still not great.) Yeah, I mean they somehow didn’t notice when Kryten walked through a security checkpoint with the time wand VERY visibly hidden inside his head. It’s really that easy for convicts to sneak things on board? Surely that’s a massive safety hazard to literally everybody on ship. With a crew that stupid, I’m surprised the drive plate wasn’t blowing up every week. (As much as I can tolerate Pete, that scene always makes me irrationally angry) And then you have the therapist, who’s just a fucking idiot, and Hollister, who is incredibly lenient towards Rimmer and Lister to the point of still letting them on probation after they indirectly caused a dinosaur to shit all over his face and drown him in vomit. Surely any sane captain would have, you know, at least extended their prison sentence for that. I guess you could argue though that as Pete goes on Hollister isn’t exactly sane anymore, but still. January 19, 2019 at 2:22 pm #242864 bloodtellerParticipant Looking at confidential files gets you and your friends 2 years in prison, giving the Captain an erection gets you weeks of laborous punishment detail, but creating a dinosaur that grossly endangers the crew and vomits and shits all over them means you get let off with a reprimand. The rules on punishment aboard JMC mining ships are far too unclear January 19, 2019 at 7:00 pm #242867 NoFroParticipant To be fair, there’s probably little precedent for that third offense.
