    Obviously the continuity of Red Dwarf is usually absolutely water-tight, but occasionally the odd flat-out contradiction does slip through.

    Imagine if Doug had thought “yeah that was probably the best gag in Nanarchy, good way to end the series,” and then just left it rather than trying to resolve a cliffhanger nobody cared about. 

    The opening scene is about as necessary as a scene finding out how they desposed of the second polymorph or a lengthy section of Duane waiting for the others to unfreeze after Emohawk, or an episode of Rimmer in Cat’s body, or a whole bit about how they didn’t die at the end of Legion or

    Well, they had to introduce the nano-resurrected crew. If they’d ignored the cliffhanger, then there would have to be a time skip. 

    I suppose they could’ve done a “Lister spent a month on the ship and didn’t notice the crew were back” joke.
