The trailer for XII came up in my Facebook memories today, and in it (and I assume the episode proper), Rimmer calls Planet Rimmer “this gas moon”. How are they standing on a moon made of gas? You can chalk him calling it a “planet” up to ego, but I think I’d be able to tell the difference between rock and gas if I attempted to stand on a big ball of it. One tiny flaw in an otherwise watertight episode.

Probably been asked and answered many times before, but why was George McIntyre – a “flight coordinator” – the person who was receiving Rimmer’s reports about Lister? Surely chain of command should have had whoever was first technician or some other engineering oversight/management responsible for this?

Part of co-ordinating the flight could be managing personnel. A sort of mix of HR and general departmental management would make sense. All departments report to George, and George reports to Hollister and Todhunter 

the fact George was sitting on Rimmer’s reports suggest he knew they weren’t worth passing on and wasting the Captain’s time

Yeah I can accept that perhaps Flight Co-ordinator is just a fancy way of saying “HR” in the JMC world.

I always had it down as being something more technical and involved with the actual journey itself – planning and preparation for their flight path, ensuring all risks have been identified and accounted for, co-ordinating with the rest of the ship to make sure every department is aligned, monitoring the journey as it progresses etc. – all of which, as far as I am aware at least, is more in line with what the role is here and now on things like commercial air travel

I always thought Flight Co-Ordinator was just a higher level technician, probably Rimmer’s boss.

That, or he just sent his reports to every officer on the ship in the hope someone would take some notice of him.
