I ask because I wanted to tell you about a weird Red Dwarf related dream I had yesterday.

Me and Ian (for some reason, we’ve spoken but never actually met) were in a a warehouse discussing how ridiculous the pencil shaped CGI Red Dwarf was. We’d found some test recording of the original pencil model, but it was double barrelled. Not just two Red Dwarfs side by side, but the right hand side had the front and ran back so somewhere in the middle of the ship (though about the same length as seen on screen, then next to it on the left, the middle of the ship continues, but level with the front of the ship, down to the back which sat level with the middle of the part on the right hand side.

Confused? It looked like this http://imgur.com/a/9kQeL

Now, remember we’re in this warehouse. Well this dishevelled old man that looks like a homeless Doc Brown from BTTF arrived and opens this box containing the model we had seen in this test shot. He keeps pulling bits out like a magician removing handkerchiefs from his sleeve. Piece my piece until this full length model is presented to us.

Now, you know how dreams change location but you know you’ve always been there? Well suddenly me and Ian are at my dead grandparents house, except my granddad isn’t dead. He seems quite happy that me and Ian have decided to suspend this model from his ceiling, starting in the back bedroom and snaking all around the top floor of his house.

At this point the model is 12 meters long (we measured it in the dream) and its more akin to the small RD model that come with one of the DVDs (series 6?) … but none the less we’re convinced this is the original 12 meter model build with the intention of shooting it for remasters.

All that stuff about how the current model is a cut down version of a 12ft model that was scanned for CGI … well that 12ft model, in my dream, was a cut down 12m model that look ridiculous.

And that’s all me and Ian could say to each other, and that we’re lucky the version that ended up on series 8 and the re-mastered wasn’t as bad as this monstrosity … and what were they thinking building this ship that ended up looking like a small red snake, winding its way around the ceiling of my grandparents house.

The artist Dave from the G&T forum has set up a ‘Back to Reality 2′ experience in his home and invited fans to come along tonight. I travel there by subway, and the strange, literally colourful characters around me make me eager to read Titan again. I meet some friends outside Dave’ mansion and we walk around a display of what seem like ‘Who has had a Red Dwarf dream?’ posts. Then we get distracted and try to find some milk in various rooms, but can’t locate the kitchen. This alerts his staff who show up to quietly help, then Dave himself appears and tells us “I invited you to play Back to Reality 2, but it’s 5 AM and you’re disturbing my family, so can you please leave.”

I had a dream in about 1991 when I was a kid. I was on the TARDIS with the Seventh Doctor and Ace but that it was built in the style of Series III/IV Red Dwarf science room (which I’d just discovered). I was only 9 so had quite wooly memories of the Sylvester McCoy era. For years I was convinced that’s what his TARDIS had looked like before I got hold of VHS tapes and realised my subconscious had overlaid the aesthetic one BBC Sci-Fi show on top of another.

The III/IV science room would make a pretty cool Tardis interior. I wonder if the Tardis inspired its design.

The interior of the Nostromo inspired its design

Now whether the TARDIS inspired the interior of the Nostromo we’ll never know

Ridley Scott was originally hired as designer on The Daleks (1963) before Raymond Cusick, so there is a bit of a connection there. It doesn’t really make him more or less likely to be inspired by the TARDIS, but I thought I’d share a nice bit of trivia that everybody here most likely already knows.

And Dan O’Bannon of course wrote Dark Star, which inspired Red Dwarf way more than Blade Runner ever did.

Only just learned O’Bannon is credited on Total Recall though. And Heavy Metal.

I’m sure this has been referenced already but I love how the typo in the title of this thread gives it a ‘Martin Luther King’-esque vibe.

I don’t think I’ve ever dreamed anything Red Dwarf related but I did once dream an episode of Lost, back when it was originally airing. I can still remember some of the imagery.

    #326985

I have Lost dreams to this day. It’s always that the show never ended, just had a kind of episode that tied up most of the main plots, and actually it’s been showing since, only in a graveyard slot so barely anyone’s been watching it.

I had a League of Gentleman dream recently. Edward and Tubbs were riding around a car park on a miniature steam train, jumping on and off and occasionally grinning creepily at “the camera” (me). Meanwhile, Benjamin or Ross or some other Reece character had to ride a metro that ascended into the clouds despite his fear of heights.

Are you sure it wasn’t just a dreamed ‘Inside No 9’ crossover episode, like they did with ‘Psychoville’?

Well they kind of did that in reverse with Tubbs and Edward’s flat in the LoG anniversary specials.

    So The Simpsons?

My wife has dreams where there are both live action and animated characters in the same setting and apparently it doesn’t jar.

Dreamt last night that I discovered that there were in fact two different versions of the Smeg Outs tape, and nobody had ever noticed before. The less common version was ten minutes longer, but rather than being a collection of outtakes from the early series of Red Dwarf, it was a feature length making-of documentary for the first series of Don’t Miss Wax.

The night before, I dreamt that there was a DwarfCast-themed connecting wall on an episode of Only Connect. So I woke up and made it.

Solved it and got all four connections. Not 100% sure about how one of the clues fits into the cyan group.

I solved it, but it came down to the wire. Good stuff.

Not 100% sure about how one of the clues fits into the cyan group.

The colours change depending on what order you solve the groups in though, right? Maybe you could name the clue, and then if someone else knows they could explain it in rot13 or something.

I didn’t realise it was Dwarfcast related, just thought it was Dwarf related, so I immediately got one of the groups because there’s a very simple and obvious connection for it, which I won’t tell you but you should be able to notice. I failed to get anything else obviously since I thought it was in-show stuff.

At least three quarters of the wall comes directly from the dream, so blame my subconscious if anything is wrong.

I got Ian’s, but Flap’s was a lot harder and I only got one set. But I do think one entry’s based on you taking a line more seriously than intended, or just pretending to.

One that might be guessable even if you didn’t know what it was doing. Even better, there was no fourth episode for one of the categories, so I left it “N/A.” They must sometimes have a “sorry, we couldn’t think of four” placeholder on the show, right?

I did make it deliberately difficult, so 1/4 is good. Feel free to complain to me in rot13 if you want to go into details.

I do have an inkling about which clue Warbodog is objecting to (and maybe Ben is thinking of the same one). Despite this, my biggest regret is that I could have called it BACK IN THE RED HERRINGS but only thought of it after I posted.

I got 0/4 on yours Warbo, so rest assured I can dish it out but I can’t take it. Impressed by the ideas there.

Got all four groups on this!

At first I thought one of the connections might be rcvfbqrf gung tnir gurve anzrf gb Olgrf ba gur ivqrb eryrnfrf, so I spent some time trying to remember those.

I didn’t get any of Flap Jack’s even though I spotted one of the connections, the Barker group, just never picked the right four.

Having more than four items that share a connection is fine, in fact it’s common practice. There’s often trial and error involved if you’ve got five things that could be part of the same group, trying to figure out which four it wants, and what other categories the fifth could belong to instead.

I’ve also made another couple of these over the last 24 hours. I smell a front page quickie, when I have time.

0/4 for both clem’s and Ben’s, haha. I think the issue (for mine as well) is that if all of the clues are the same type of thing, then there are just so many possible connections between them that it’s too hard to even get started.

I might try again with some more distinct groups.
