I had a theory that when holograms are booted up for the first time, before we see them they spend some time in a kind of virtual waiting room, where they’re briefed on what’s going on.

Yeah, this is the theory I go with too.

As well as the C&P ending there’s also the bit in Holoship where they’re auditioning new hologram crewmates and Lister says:

I wonder if the mind swap they attempted on the Nova 5 was during the crisis that ended with it crashing, since it was so dangerously experimental that you’d only try it when desperate. Maybe one of the three skellingtons already died that way before/during the crash and they needed her authorisation or something.

Maybe Kryten is secretly one of the crew’s personalities that has been swapped into a mechanoid body to survive.

Given the potential for fun with Holo-Lister I’m surprised the show never really did anything with it. Outside of this, obviously:

There’s a bit where you see the ghostly figure standing against a wall in a room which lead to me being scared of the full-length curtain covering the kitchen door that could easily fit someone standing behind it. For YEARS I had to kick it every time I went in to make sure nobody was hiding there.

That specific shot (I know exactly which one you’re thinking of – the camera pans past the curtain and then does a double-take, but Pipes is gone) is one of the best bits of Ghostwatch. That’s when I knew it was going to be good.

(I was reminded of it recently watching Widow’s Bay on AppleTV where there’s a similar, relatively subtle reveal as the camera pans round a room that was also subtly chilling.)

Yeah I love the taste of a lot of booze, and not just because it’s booze. There are some fantastic wines, beers, whiskies and cocktails out there. But I also recognise it’s not for everyone and some people might not enjoy it.

It’s just that traditional British ales, stouts etc. traditionally aren’t chilled to the same degree that a lot of beers from other traditions are. They’re not warm exactly but not served as cold as other beers.

Over time it just became one of those hoary old clichés about the British – like bad teeth, drinking tea, and violent football hooliganism.

think Inside No. 9 might genuinely be the best series the BBC has ever produced. Not my favourite, but in terms of maintaining an incredible quality over such a long time, covering such a huge range of styles and settings and ideas, it’s absolutely phenomenal. 

It’s an amazing body of work. I introduced my daughter to it last year and she’s become hooked too, it’s been fantastic rewatching them all again with her and realising just how much they managed to do with the format. Inspiring.

Toyah was filthy and kept telling the boys that she wanted to take them back to the dressing room and fuck them. Then she sang a bit of I Want To Be Free. It was all quite chaotic but good fun.

I don’t think Amandaland works quite as well as the ensemble isn’t quite as strong. Although Lumley lifts it and there have been some enjoyable bits. The Christmas special with Jennifer Saunders was quite good fun.

Maybe Motherland should be in there as well? I also recently enjoyed Mammoth.

The live show of the latter was superb as well, saw it in Sunderland.

Yes, I saw it in Birmingham (Toyah Willcox). Incredible. 

I have similar concerns over a Ghosts movie, but I trust them at this point to do it right.

Ghosts and Inside No. 9 would both be near the top of the list for me. Both superb in their own ways. Detectorists and Small Prophets would both be in there too, lovely shows.

I’d also make room for the Cunk On Earth/Britain/Life shows as they’re one of the few series that reliably make me laugh out loud multiple times every episode.

Oh, I’ve been doing that for a while when mixing the classic and Dave eras. It looks weird otherwise.
