The very same. 19/05/2026 May 18, 2026 at 9:40 pm in reply to: Mundane observation dome #320729 DaveParticipant May 18, 2026 at 6:24 pm in reply to: The Classic Doctor Who Thread (1963 to 1989/1996) #320693 DaveParticipant I’m more with Flap Jack, the TV movie is a different thing entirely to the classic series, to me. Although that might be because I remember experiencing the Doctor Who cancellation in real-time and the long wait for the movie to revive it, which felt like just as much of a reboot at that time as the RTD era did later. In retrospect though I can see how the movie feels like a last hurrah of the classic series rather than the start of a new era. May 18, 2026 at 4:56 pm in reply to: You Red Dwarf Looping GIFs #320688 DaveParticipant May 18, 2026 at 4:56 pm in reply to: Which episode makes the best use of both Kryten and Holly together? #320687 DaveParticipant May 18, 2026 at 4:40 pm in reply to: Which episode makes the best use of both Kryten and Holly together? #320685 DaveParticipant It occurs to me that Kryten’s reintroduction to Holly in Nanarchy (“face, I suppose”) might be one of the most extensive dialogue exchanges the two characters directly have with each other in any Red Dwarf episode. This was exactly the scene I was going to mention. It’s a nice little interaction and maybe the best moment the characters have ever shared together. I also like Hattie-Holly’s drunken interaction with Kryten in The Last Day. May 18, 2026 at 3:40 pm in reply to: Your Unpopular Red Dwarf Opinions #320666 DaveParticipant If it can put the legs back it should be able to land “standing up” too. May 17, 2026 at 10:50 pm in reply to: Did somebody turn over two pages at once?! #320583 DaveParticipant May 17, 2026 at 10:05 pm in reply to: Your Unpopular Red Dwarf Opinions #320573 DaveParticipant Norman is great but weirdly I’m glad I only saw his episodes on the eventual repeats after I’d got used to the Hattie version in IV and V when I got into Red Dwarf, because then I didn’t view Hattie’s Holly as any kind of an attempt to imitate Norman. In my mind they both just did their own thing and are both equally good at it. May 17, 2026 at 9:59 pm in reply to: Your Red Dwarf Art #320572 DaveParticipant Professor Flibble can stay. Yeah this is superb. May 17, 2026 at 8:42 pm in reply to: Ace Rimmer – What A Bastard #320534 DaveParticipant Ace is just rubbing it in how useless he thinks Rimmer is by asking to perform a task he is physically incapable of and then mocking him for it. That said, between this and the original ending I think Rob and Doug might’ve just forgotten Rimmer is a hologram while writing this episode. Reminiscent of the bit in Backwards (the novel) where he eventually learns how to control something physical by bouncing his light bee on it. May 17, 2026 at 8:40 pm in reply to: Your Red Dwarf Art #320532 DaveParticipant I quite like those, all very plausible. May 17, 2026 at 8:39 pm in reply to: Your Unpopular Red Dwarf Opinions #320530 DaveParticipant I wouldn’t have known who Bader is when I saw that ep but I did see a doc about him being in Colditz a couple of years ago I think I first heard of him when Jasper Carrott did a routine decades ago about roads in Birmingham that had been renamed to honour famous war heroes, one of which was (and this is true) “Bader Walk”. May 17, 2026 at 7:10 pm in reply to: Your Unpopular Red Dwarf Opinions #320503 DaveParticipant Why a heroic RAF pilot wouldn’t be getting much sex I don’t know. Unless his injuries extended up to his groin but the wiki article doesn’t cover that. Genuinely not sure if joking. May 17, 2026 at 6:40 pm in reply to: Ace Rimmer – What A Bastard #320499 DaveParticipant But Rimmer is a weaselly maggot who probably can’t smoke a kipper. Ace considers giving somebody a nickname a great honour, and Cat already has one, so giving him another one is redundant. He says “hopefully” some sex, which is just a very forward way of asking for consent. And mechanoids aren’t people, so decking one is fine. Please remove this inflammatory post immediately. ACE APOLOGIST May 17, 2026 at 5:43 pm in reply to: Ace Rimmer – What A Bastard #320492 DaveParticipant And of course the all-time number one. May 17, 2026 at 5:42 pm in reply to: Ace Rimmer – What A Bastard #320491 DaveParticipant Sexually harassing a woman and implicitly conditioning her rescue from her Nazi captors on future payment in kind. NOT OK, ACE. May 17, 2026 at 5:39 pm in reply to: Red Dwarf frames with sexy auras #320490 DaveParticipant May 17, 2026 at 5:38 pm in reply to: Ace Rimmer – What A Bastard #320489 DaveParticipant Taken together, this implies that after meeting Cat and learning he doesn’t have a name, Ace still thinks it’s more important to give Lister a nickname than sort out a proper name for Cat. What an arsehole. May 17, 2026 at 5:37 pm in reply to: Ace Rimmer – What A Bastard #320488 DaveParticipant Not very understanding, Ace. May 17, 2026 at 5:37 pm in reply to: Ace Rimmer – What A Bastard #320487 DaveParticipant This is a dickheaded thing to say. May 17, 2026 at 12:09 pm in reply to: Jokes you don't/didn't get #320482 DaveParticipant Clearly it should have been “you’ve got a longer yellow streak than a Series VIII Smegle”. May 17, 2026 at 10:48 am in reply to: Jokes you don't/didn't get #320475 DaveParticipant g(u)oD Appropriately for this thread, this took me a second. May 17, 2026 at 10:26 am in reply to: Your Unpopular Red Dwarf Opinions #320472 DaveParticipant Absolutely. It’d be an interesting challenge to try and rework some of the weaker gags into something that lands better, but with respect to the original writers I’m sure they went through that process too and felt like the final version was the best they could come up with. And sometimes the overworked nature of these gags, particularly the extended similies, is part of what makes them funny. It’s not an exact science. May 17, 2026 at 10:07 am in reply to: Your Unpopular Red Dwarf Opinions #320469 DaveParticipant The “Saturday night in Salt Lake City” joke works mostly for the rhythm and sibilance of the phrasing, I think. Often with these kinds of jokes I feel as though the importance of the central premise is overrated and the importance of the specific language used is underrated. The beat and rhythm and accent of a sentence is massively important in whether a joke lands or not. May 17, 2026 at 10:03 am in reply to: Did somebody turn over two pages at once?! #320467 DaveParticipant SHITEY SPRITE When a videogame character that Lister has merrily abused for years finds its way into the real world, the boys from the Dwarf find themselves in a pixel pickle.
