I’m more with Flap Jack, the TV movie is a different thing entirely to the classic series, to me. Although that might be because I remember experiencing the Doctor Who cancellation in real-time and the long wait for the movie to revive it, which felt like just as much of a reboot at that time as the RTD era did later.

In retrospect though I can see how the movie feels like a last hurrah of the classic series rather than the start of a new era.

It occurs to me that Kryten’s reintroduction to Holly in Nanarchy (“face, I suppose”) might be one of the most extensive dialogue exchanges the two characters directly have with each other in any Red Dwarf episode.

This was exactly the scene I was going to mention. It’s a nice little interaction and maybe the best moment the characters have ever shared together. 

I also like Hattie-Holly’s drunken interaction with Kryten in The Last Day.

Norman is great but weirdly I’m glad I only saw his episodes on the eventual repeats after I’d got used to the Hattie version in IV and V when I got into Red Dwarf, because then I didn’t view Hattie’s Holly as any kind of an attempt to imitate Norman. In my mind they both just did their own thing and are both equally good at it.

Ace is just rubbing it in how useless he thinks Rimmer is by asking to perform a task he is physically incapable of and then mocking him for it.

That said, between this and the original ending I think Rob and Doug might’ve just forgotten Rimmer is a hologram while writing this episode.

Reminiscent of the bit in Backwards (the novel) where he eventually learns how to control something physical by bouncing his light bee on it.

I think I first heard of him when Jasper Carrott did a routine decades ago about roads in Birmingham that had been renamed to honour famous war heroes, one of which was (and this is true) “Bader Walk”.

Absolutely. It’d be an interesting challenge to try and rework some of the weaker gags into something that lands better, but with respect to the original writers I’m sure they went through that process too and felt like the final version was the best they could come up with.

And sometimes the overworked nature of these gags, particularly the extended similies, is part of what makes them funny. It’s not an exact science.

The “Saturday night in Salt Lake City” joke works mostly for the rhythm and sibilance of the phrasing, I think.

Often with these kinds of jokes I feel as though the importance of the central premise is overrated and the importance of the specific language used is underrated. The beat and rhythm and accent of a sentence is massively important in whether a joke lands or not.
