I wonder if there was a more practical reason for Kryten to be classified as a woman in Series VIII – they needed someone for Kochanski to have scenes with in prison, and he was the only one of the existing main characters where any argument at all (no matter how silly) could made for him being placed in the women’s section.

Doesn’t mean they don’t try to wring a lot of tired humour out of the premise, but I do think there’s a good chance it started from a place of story mechanics rather than “let’s do jokes about how silly it is for a man to do stereotypically feminine things”.

I don’t know if this has been brought up before, but I was watching Meltdown today and only clocked for the first time that the motorbike Rimmer rides (when he sees off his troops for the final time) has to also be a hologram, and therefore generated by his own light bee.

Which in turn raises the question, can Rimmer’s light bee generate other vehicles for him? Could it make a car, a tank, a plane? Presumably any vehicles are limited by the speed his light bee can travel, but what is that? Was he only able to pootle along on his bike at 10mph? There must also be maximum altitude, otherwise Rimmer would be able to fly.

Thinking even more broadly, what limits are there on the items Rimmer (or any hologram) can generate? In Polymorph he has a pipe and a placard after having his anger removed. In Thanks for the Memory, his triple fried egg, chilli sauce and chutney sandwich is visible, but the drinks he has down on the moon at the beginning are invisible. There are probably other examples as well, but those are the first ones that spring to mind.

The back and forth stuff suggests that Holly’s playing proper, legal moves, up until at least “queens don’t move like that” and “check and mate, sucker”, with the ‘horsie’ stuff being silly, but inconsequential to the actual gameplay. To counter that, seems odd that Holly would be competent at it, given he tries his best to get out of chess being the game, and “I was thinking of poker” etc…

Given that Queeg was Holly all along, the whole match (and the discussion about what game they’re going to play) is just an act on his part. He presumably pretends to be worse at/have less understanding of chess than he actually does for the sake of the prank.

As someone who only recently created an account, and only really did so to keep track of which threads had updated, I’d like to use my very first comment to say that I’ve found this thread absolutely hilarious and the memes frequently had me in stitches.

I’d much rather see more of that sort of thing than ongoing confirmation that an actor whose work I’ve enjoyed since I was literally a child has gone off the deep end.
