Dimension Jump attendees have just been the first to be informed – by Doug Naylor, via email passed on by Andrew Ellard – that Dave have commissioned six new episodes of Red Dwarf for broadcast in late 2010.

Also, it’s been hinted that (a) there may actually end up being more than six, depending on budget; and (b) it’ll probably have a studio audience.

More to follow.

  • I bet that woke a few people up from their morning-after drowsiness…

Splendid news, thanks for the update..

  • Would be fantastic to watch it being filmed if they did indeed decide to go down the studio audience route

  • Woah, while the rumours were there, it’s good to see there’s confirmation the rumours were true.

  • absolutely fantastic news, wish i could have been there this weekend, great to hear it could have an audience ..HERE WE GO AGAIN !

  • Porupine Tree gig, new TV Burp, new Hitchhikers book and now news of a new series of Dwarf. Yeah, it’s turning into quite a good long weekend.

  • Will Norm be bitter when it’s decided he’s been too much of an arse? (That’ll make another chapter for the book)

  • >Will Chloe Return?

Yes, but she will be played by various puppets from Team America.

    >Will Hattie Return?

Perhaps, but it depends on whether her contract allows for it

    >Will Norm be bitter when it?s decided he?s been too much of an arse?

I believe he will make a myspace post about it, and it will be incredibly intelligently written.

    >Will jokes return?

No, the writers from the recent seasons of The Simpsons will help write it.

    >will starbug return ?

    Yes. It will be pink.

    >Great news! How much time will Craig have to take off to film them?

    A day. He’s a quick actor.

    >Will Mr Flibble Return?

He will have his own episode.

  • News just in, after much demand, Dave have dropped the new series of Red Dwarf in favour of a new series of Hyperdrive.

  • >Will jokes return?

    >No, the writers from the recent seasons of The Simpsons will help write it.

The latest season started out strongly enough…
Fair enough I haven’t seen any of the later latest episodes but still…
    My point is obvious.
    So THERE.

  • As if I wasn’t happy enough on hearing the news, this thread makes me happy and I love you all.

  • I read it first on G&T. :-) Thanks guys. Great News. Makes a crappy overtime shift fade away into an afternoon smile of the future. So more than 6 then. Time will tell on that I guess, sounds like that same kind of budget jiggling that back to earth went through in developement. Exciting times to come. I predict it will be different, yet again. :-)

  • Yeh, I read it first on G&T, I went down the main forum page and I looked at the side to see “MORE NEW RED DWARF IN 2010”, my first thought was “Why shout?” and my second thought was “MORE NEW RED DWARF IN 2010?”.

  • (a) there may actually end up being more than six, depending on budget;

Have Dave won the lottery or are they hoping to make it with favours again?

  • I?m told that as a result of my previous post Venture South’s Drummer received a phone call from Norman expressing his offence to my comment and that people are unaware of the full story and how he feels somewhat hurt by the negativity towards him recently. Consequently, I offer my apologies to Norman for this. It had been intended as a post inline with the kind of humour found on the forum but I realise that in actual fact it just caused offence and was ill thought through, so once again my apologies.

I shall try to reserve my these kinds of posts for criticism of Iain Lee whom, as we all know, is fair game.

  • I thought Norman said he was never going to come on this site ever again?

I wish he’d post here (again). If we’re unaware of the full story, why not give us his side?

Also, I’d like to believe he’s a nice and generally misunderstood guy, and surely posting here a little and joining the community would give people a chance to get an insight into the REAL Norman and not this grumpy caricature that’s been built up amongst RD fandom over the last few years…

  • Also, I’m gonna go on record and predict that Norman will be asked back for the new series.

Whether he accepts or not of course is another matter…

  • He said on the phone that having seen BTE he was glad he wasn’t a part of it, so don’t hold your breath.

  • Great news! (The return of Red Dwarf, not Norman’s phone call. Although I genuinely wish him well.)

    >News just in, after much demand, Dave have dropped the new series of Red Dwarf in favour of a new series of Hyperdrive.

You’re a sick sick man Mr Object. (Snigger.)

  • I hope (beyond hope!) that these 6 episodes are going to be just that – 6 single stories. Not a three parter, or a two parter, or a six part story, or any combination capped with a pointless cliffhanger… just 6 solid, funny, individual tales.

  • I hope (beyond hope!) that these 6 episodes are going to be just that – 6 single stories. Not a three parter, or a two parter, or a six part story, or any combination capped with a pointless cliffhanger? just 6 solid, funny, individual tales.

Whether or not that’s a good thing depends on how much time we’ve got per episode I reckon. If it’s the same time slot that we had in the original shows, fair enough. I’d like more of that myself although I wouldn’t be opposed to an overarching plot, (That wouldn’t exclude the individual stories,) or one two parter.

If we’ve got the same timeslot as BtE though, I’m not sure 23 minutes (or whatever it was) would be enough for the dense stories RD is known for. Multiparters might be the way to go in that case, but two episodes long should be enough.

  • > I hope (beyond hope!) that these 6 episodes are going to be just that – 6 single stories. Not a three parter, or a two parter, or a six part story, or any combination capped with a pointless cliffhanger? just 6 solid, funny, individual tales.

Nah, it’ll be one large six-parter that will then extend into 2 additional episodes..

Also BOO-YAH!!! :D Now if only they can manage something with a bit more originality than BTE.

  • Whether or not that?s a good thing depends on how much time we?ve got per episode I reckon. If it?s the same time slot that we had in the original shows, fair enough. See, I reckon you can still get a decent story into a 23 minute slot. Sure it’ll be quicker, and the extra 4 minutes make a lot of difference. I’m sure though, with some sharp plotting and writing, you can pack a great, multi-layered story into 24 minutes. Look at Frasier for example, or the US Office – you can get the story AND the gags in there.

  • I don’t care, just get it made.

Okay, I do care. I sat through the initial broadcast of BtE with a big grin on my face because it was Red Dwarf and it was new. I’d never seen BladeRunner, so got none of the references, and yes, looking back, it was nowhere near as funny as it should have been. Six ‘classic’ style episodes would be lovely, yespleasethankyouDoug.

  • I would rather have 3 two-part stories, while 23-24 minutes is good for some shows I don’t think Red Dwarf can pack it all in, Series VI was practically bursting at the seems as it is.

  • Fan-smegging-tastic! Btw, did anybody else who saw Friday’s Peep Show wonder whether Johnson asking Mark if Suze was seeing “that guy from the Smeg oven shop” might be a reference to Sophie Winkleman having been in Back to Earth?

  • They really need to do 6x29min episodes (fit into a 40min Dave slot). Hopefully Dave will allow that. The BtE individual episodes felt too short. OK they weren’t fitting a full story into each but it definitely didn’t feel right.

I say they should STICK to 6 episodes, unless Doug wants to make the last a 2-parter, which will be good, as long as they are 29min each. There’s no need for 8 eps or more, that’s stretching things out too much, UNLESS other writers get involved. It is a FACT that VII and VIII suffered due to having 8 episodes each. Epideme, for example, would have been much better if combined with Nanarchy (this would involve cutting most of Nanarchy then upping the pace in Epideme, it could have turned out rather good).

Let the G&T team write an episode. Did I just type that…? Don’t worry, it’s OK, I’ve slapped myself as punishment for considering such a terrible notion.

  • >Fan-smegging-tastic! Btw, did anybody else who saw Friday?s Peep Show wonder whether Johnson asking Mark if Suze was seeing ?that guy from the Smeg oven shop? might be a reference to Sophie Winkleman having been in Back to Earth?

Yup. It was too obscure to not be deliberate.

    >I hope (beyond hope!) that these 6 episodes are going to be just that – 6 single stories. Not a three parter, or a two parter, or a six part story, or any combination capped with a pointless cliffhanger? just 6 solid, funny, individual tales.

This. God, this. And original stories, not just tired reruns of Future Echoes or Back to Reality.

  • I would like a continuing story, but have it not be mentioned in half of the episodes (interleave them), and have a two parter in the middle.

  • great amazing news, i just hope they dont end the show on this new series, as it would be nice to give life to at least 2 more series after this one

  • Each week the Dwarfers face mortal danger and we’re all left on the edge of our seats wondering how Rimmer is going to die ala South Park.

  • bobby on twitter

“Want to re-state that UKTV, aka Dave have commissioned Doug Naylor to write scripts, still a long way to go before it’s all official”

  • It is great news. :D

Whether it ends up being six episodes or more (I very much doubt it’ll be more) I wouldn’t be opposed to other writers being brought on board (whether as co-writers or guest writers), despite the, er, mixed results of that approach in series VII and VIII.

  • > despite the, er, mixed results of that approach in series VII and VIII.

Totally different circumstances now, I think. It could work a lot better than it did. I’m sure plenty of writers would be up for doing an episode.

  • I’m sure plenty of writers were up for doing an episode then, too.

If he’s got a year to play with, I’d imagine Doug will happily write the entire series himself. Or turn to established Red Dwarf scribe Paul Alexander, or even Mr Ellard, should he need another voice.

  • did anybody else who saw Friday?s Peep Show wonder whether Johnson asking Mark if Suze was seeing ?that guy from the Smeg oven shop? might be a reference to Sophie Winkleman having been in Back to Earth?

I saw that episode but I completely missed that! I tend to miss bits of dialogue here and there though. Certainly looks like an in-joke.

I think they made an in-joke in That Mitchell and Webb Look too. The posh lad made a snarky comment about their programme being ‘taken up by Dave’ in one of the meta sketches.

  • Robert seems to be advising caution, not yet totally in the bag!

Clearly making up for leaking details about BTE there :-)

Great pictures from B’ham already by the way.

  • Hey team G & T! I had to fuck off before I got a chance to get Chloe, Craig and Danny’s autograph. Obviously I wanted to find out if my shout out on Friday went down well or whether you just thought I was a massive cunt! Could’ve just asked on the night but I’ve now read your twitter feed and am glowing in smug gittiness.

    Highlights…

Ellard’s announcement about new series. All my friends from DJ ’98 now hate Red Dwarf but I did text my lady friend who seemed very excited. Or maybe she was just humouring me.

Meeting Bobby and telling him how much I enjoy his youtube confessionals.

Seb’s enjoyable fan fiction getting published in new magazine spectacularly upstaged by Walrus Polishing Kit advert. Haven’t laughed that long and hard since the perfectly square bit of dirt on the window from Father Ted.

Craig Charles not giving one solitary shit that there were kids in the room and reading a poem with about thirty ‘fuck’s in it. If I had gotten the chance to get his autograph I would have gotten him to write out his closing poem word for word. Majestic appearance.

And now I’ve got Friday’s Peep Show to watch. Bliss!

  • >All my friends from DJ ?98 now hate Red Dwarf but I did text my lady friend who seemed very excited. Or maybe she was just humouring me.

the show got that bad huh?

  • I remember dj 98 as a very sour time. I kept the faith. In a way…

    Here’s a message I got on face book from a fellow dj 98 attendee;

from Robert Llewellyn on Twitter :- “Series 10 of Red Dwarf announcement just been made at DJ 09. To clarify the scripts have been commissioned, wont be filming til 2010.”
There is no avatar to sum up how I feel about this. Even the ‘…hand slaps own head’ does not come close. Naylor is milking a dead cow.

  • Each to their own opinion but surely BTE’s viewing figures alone denote a very much alive cow. Maybe it isn’t as creamy as it once was perhaps, but semi-skimmed is still favourable compared to a dry cereal bowl.

  • Just got back from DJ. I’m so glad that I went – had an absolutely brilliant time!
It was so great to finally meet some of you guys.

I can’t believe we have to wait a whole year to do it again.

    …..
I still think they’d be pushed to fit a proper RD storyline into 23 minutes. I’d love to have 40 minutes in a hour-long slot.

  • > Or turn to established Red Dwarf scribe Paul Alexander

    God plz no.

I’d like just six episodes of Doug doing what he wants to do with HIS show and not bringing back X, Y and Z because it’s allegedly what the fans want.

  • Maybe he could come up with his own version of Seinfeld’s famous “no hugging, no learning” mantra.

“No Ace, no Duane, no squids”

  • Actually, I wouldn’t mind the return of Ace if it wasn’t contrived and shoehorned in. If it added to an episode with a good plot, bring him on. That intro to Stoke Me A Clipper was probably the funniest sequence of series VII.

There’s no need to EVER see Duane again.

  • >I?d like just six episodes of Doug doing what he wants to do with HIS show and not bringing back X, Y and Z because it?s allegedly what the fans want.

What if he wants Y back in HIS show, besides Y was pretty funny.

  • Okay let me clarify I’m not saying never bring back Ace, or Duane or whoever. However so much of the outcry from ‘fans’ seems to be simply to a re-run of something they’ve seen before. It works at DJ in the Q+A’s when people ask can we see the cat dance or if Chris can sing the Rimmer song, because it’s a quick laugh and always a pleasure to see a cast member perform his greatest bit.

However re-appearances by old characters in any TV show only work if there’s a reason for that character to return. We’ve been blessed with so many great alternate personas and guest characters in Dwarf, but they all stemmed naturally first and foremost.

The SMAC episode return to my mind works really well because it’s a story driven return. The idea that ‘our’ Rimmer’s ultimately destiny is to become Ace? Well that’s the perfect end for our Rimmer IMO. IAlso the character is given something new to do. The scenes of Ace in action as a pan-dimensional swashbucking adventure are something we haven’t really scene before. Other times in stuff like Emohawk and the crap in Series 8 with the ‘Dibbley family’ the returns feel cheap and shoe-horned. As if the decisn w

It’s more or less the same with the ‘Bunk Room scenes’ it wasn’t because those scenes took place IN A BUNKROOM that made them funny. It was the sparkling dialogue and the performances. The Bunkroom dialogue just evolved into other rooms and ships. So bringing back ‘Bunk Room Scenes’ doesn’t automatically equal great Dwarf.

  • If we were going to see Ace again surely it would be a flashback showing us how he, aka the original Rimmer, ended up back with the crew. Though we don’t really NEED to see that. The obvious idea is that Rimmer is crap at being Ace. Ace turns up and while usually he would save the day, and that’s what the crew expect, what he does makes things a whole lot worse. His ship blows up and he is stuck back aboard the Dwarf once more.

The problem is, you can’t top the pretty elaborate sequence at the start of Stoke. Any real Ace return would be a letdown after that methinks.

  • Isn’t the grammer wrong? I’m no expert or anything, but how can I hope to improve if even the press does gets it wrong a bit!

  • > And despite being re-written the piece is STILL inaccurate.

Maybe an official press release is the answer?

  • > Maybe an official press release is the answer?

I’m not bemoaning from a Dwarf angle so much as the laziness. The story being reported could be accurate if the various sites reporting it actually made one bit of effort to garner the facts. Basic effort to get the number of Back to Earth episodes right, or to accurately state the ratings data, really shouldn’t be beyond someone who writes this stuff for a living.

I know there’s a culture of getting it out fast rather than getting it right, but lazy guesswork shouldn’t make up the majority of any coverage of anything. A press release isn’t really in the spirit of the message, which was a semi-personal one to a group of devoted fans. (But then, most of the coverage seems to unaware that the message itself even exists. Poor Bobby’s being cited despite only repeating the information.). Why is the BTE info messed up? That shouldn’t need restating when one Google would find the data.

There were hundreds of people in the room. Using Twitter as the only source is lazy. Red Dwarf will be fine, though – it’s journalistic integrity that’s in trouble!

  • I’ve heard that. Apparently TV channels love to commision show scripts with no intention of ever using them…..

  • Indeed. He could write entire pages about some of DoG’s ‘journalism’. He also has some copyright-infringing YouTube vids….

  • > Basic effort to… accurately state the ratings data,

Aren’t they using the overnights for the original showings of each episode?

[I realise that using the BARB figures, which were [as (Dave)+(D+1/DJV)] 2.357m+0.385m, 1.238m+0.366m and 1.197m+0.319m respectively would be more accurate, but I’ve never seen a news outlet use GNP’s preferred measure of “all the showings for an episode in a week added together” to date since BARB switched from that method (after RD8’s broadcast, incidentally).]

  • I partly meant the 2.7 figure for ep one, which is a record of sorts, but I’d really argue that the parity of parts two and three in the ratings tells an important story – if you want to talk about the numbers, forgetting episode three is a big deal.

I wasn’t referring to the ‘during the week repeats’ total, though it’s not unusual – certainly the Beeb always used to go with ‘the ep and it’s Sunday repeat’ (or whatever) for their shows. Not massively my area, though, and not what I meant. Seemed like the story had gone with old archive data rather than final numbers – if I mis-spoke or they’ve corrected, fair enough.

  • No, like I said, I’m fairly sure they’ve used the overnight (initial) figures – “dipped into their archives,” as you put it. If that’s your trouble, then you’re right.

I was mostly working on the presumption (given that GNP press releases tend to cite BtE pts 2 & 3 as getting over 2m each) that you were complaining that they didn’t consolidate the ratings for all the showings together, rather than about the specific version of the numbers used.

  • > was mostly working on the presumption (given that GNP press releases tend to cite BtE pts 2 & 3 as getting over 2m each) that you were complaining that they didn?t consolidate the ratings for all the showings together

Oh no, not my intention at all. That’s a judgment call, a matter of choice. And to be honest I suspect the piece wasn’t based on making any choice at all, either way, rather than pasting the first numbers that were found handy.

  • Some slightly more informed reporting on DoG today, then.

(despite not having written for them for a while, I’d emailed Simon to correct a couple of the errors – and he asked if I could write it up as a story, in that case, and he’d take the old one down. So I did, and he did.)

  • Really, REALLY, REALLY hope that, if the series does come to pass, we get some tight, gag-packed, done in one stories. The multi-parters absolutely murdered series VIII.

  • Damn right. As much as I genuinely enjoyed series VIII, there were only two fully self-contained episodes in the entire series. In my opinion, they were also the two best episodes of the series.

  • Damn right. As much as I genuinely enjoyed series VIII, there were only two fully self-contained episodes in the entire series. In my opinion, they were also the two best episodes of the series.

Agree entirely. I know people say “well that’s how Doug writes”, but I think he needs to hark back to the early series’ story-telling structure a bit and do away with the multi-part episodes. For me they all scream WARNING: BUDGET PROBLEMS. I worry that the Dave-level of budget means we’re likely to get more stories split across episodes, but personally I’d rather have a series of 4 excellent standalone episodes than a bunch of clock-watching multi-parters.

  • On another topic, I also don’t think we really need to see how Rimmer botched it at being Ace. Let’s just take it as read that he did and move on – hopefully Doug will treat the big gap in series as Dwarf’s version of the Time War and just build the funny onto the status quo. A part of me appreciates his attempts in later series and in Last Human to tidy up the discrepancies, but after all this time I don’t need to see Red Dwarf as a proper continuity package, I’d sooner it was entertaining and funny.

  • See for me I don’t need to know or particular want to know which Rimmer it is, what really happened to Kochanski, where the crew went etc…

We’ve got the key four, we’ve got a Red Dwarf. Series III feels to me like it’s a slightly different universe to the one we saw on I and II and that got away with just that quick unreadable (till you got a decent pause screen and a decent video) scrawl.

Good, bad, indifferent – the past is the past now. I’d just really love to see the characters of Kryten, Cat, Rimmer and Lister (not the caricatures we got in S8, and partially in BTE) back on screen and most important evolving.

Are there any plans for a G&T ‘Things we’d like to see in Series ?’ article btw? Then again as Dwarf fans I guess we should all know better than to get too excited until everything’s all signed, sealed and most importantly filmed.

  • > Rob Grant knew how to say ?no, that?s not good enough, chuck it out?
    Doug Naylor doesn?t.

Yes but Doug does know when to say ‘That’s enough Cake’.

  • > Rob Grant knew how to say ?no, that?s not good enough, chuck it out?
    Doug Naylor doesn?t.

Maybe not so much that, but in VIII you get the impression that there are a lot of gags that wouldn’t have made the script edit in the old days.

I completely agree about the multi-part episodes. Although, not so much because an episodic format *couldn’t* work, but because we’ve seen how much of VIII suffered from the addition of weak scenes added/extended to fill the time.

  • >Rob Grant knew how to say ?no, that?s not good enough, chuck it out?

Tell that to the people who sat through Dark Ages.

  • I had a thought today (Just the one, I’m still recovering from DJ), but what if Rob had stayed… and it had been crap? I mean we automatically assume that Rob + Doug = Dwarf Gold, but perhaps the idea, the time, the cast – I love ’em to bits, but perhaps Dwarf’s time has just passed?

  • Andrew Ellard informed us that Doug thought the later series of RD suffered because there was no mystery left to the characters back story. We pretty much knew all there was to know about them and that the BtE “reboot” gave us a 9 year mystery again. I’d never really thought about an unknown history of the characters being important for the enjoyment of later series. Could that be one of the reasons series VII and VIII suffered? I personally am not sure. VII wasn’t anywhere as good because Rimmer left. VIII was just silly at times….but I actually quite liked most of VIII

  • > Could that be one of the reasons series VII and VIII suffered? I personally am not sure.

    Me neither.
But I thnk the comment about giving the characters more history is valid and makes a lot of sense.

  • > Andrew Ellard informed us that Doug thought the later series of RD suffered

Actually, I said Doug had made an astute point about a large narrative gap providing the characters new backstory, which allows you new material about ‘how I became me’. Giving the characters a fresh start, almost.

Then I did my own ranting editorial about how that can affect the later series of shows – using Friends (not Red Dwarf) as an example. Didn’t ascribe Doug any opinion about the later series.

  • Ah, my memory isn’t what it was. I’d blame alcohol, but I believe I was stone cold sober at the time.

  • > Could that be one of the reasons series VII and VIII suffered?

I think so. It always grated for me when the Dwarf suddenly started looking backwards and referencing parts of the show we’d allready seen first time around. The luck/sexual magnetism stuff in VIII is a good example. I was thinking today about how great it was to see Craig in that Lister jacket at DJ, but then I started thinking new series and thinking I’d rather see Lister in his ‘Series 9’ gear whatever that maybe. It would seem more believable. Rimmer’s outfit in BTE was a great example of getting things right.

  • True on Rimmer’s BTE togs – a great mix of referencing the past, but updating it correctly. And I agree on having in Lister in ‘series 9’ gear, as opposed to his 3-5 getup (as much as I love the look). For a fleeting moment in Back In The Red Lister has an updated boiler-suit look from VI, and it looks great… The sets have always moved along, and if the Dave series gets the full go ahead, I’d love to see more of the Back To Earth production design, it just looked great…

But visuals-wise, there’s nothing to worry about is there, really? Virtually every series has it’s own visual stamp that makes it easily identifiable, and I’m sure any new series will be no different.

  • i wonder has red dwarf become like the simpsons?

now i know one is a cartoon and the other is a sci-fi comedy/sitcom, but many people are critical about the simpsons saying its not as good as it used to be and yet it continues to get viewers, and now we got red dwarf at its peak in the late 90’s and now i hear that people who were fans are being put off the show sayin its not as good as it used to be

  • on doug naylors commentary on BTE he says about how critics said he was running out of ideas and how he didnt think fans would believe he actally was breaking for 4th wall for real and yet many did…

now this sounds to me like people really dont have faith in him, i hope he goes out his way and tries hard to show them up :)

  • >but many people are critical about the simpsons saying its not as good as it used to be

Yeah, um, it’s not. Nowhere near as good.

    >and yet it continues to get viewers

The Simpsons was soooo good in its Golden Years, that its more hardcore fans will continue to tune in for the rest of its lifespan, no matter how far it continues to descend into mediocrity.

    >and now we got red dwarf at its peak in the late 90?s

You’re talking in terms of audience numbers, right?

  • >For a fleeting moment in Back In The Red Lister has an updated boiler-suit look from VI, and it looks great?
When did he wear this, are you refering to the diving bell sequence outfit?

  • >You?re talking in terms of audience numbers, right?

well lets just say i wasnt hearing people say oh i dont like it anymore, or its lost its way, or like previously mentioned… its like milking a dead cow

  • I think so. It always grated for me when the Dwarf suddenly started looking backwards and referencing parts of the show we?d allready seen first time around. The luck/sexual magnetism stuff in VIII is a good example.

I like back-referencing, as long as it is in moderation. It gives a sense of continuity, and can be an opportunity to explore certain things further. The positive viruses are a good example of that, particularly as they didn’t use the sexual magnetism virus in Quarantine. And I enjoyed the fact they mentioned Future Echoes in Cassandra. It worked in the story as establishing the rules of the time line employed in that episode.

That being said, I’d dislike it to be a regular story device. “Do you remember when…”, “this is like when…”, over and over again. It started to grate a bit in BtE for example, although it’s understandable in that case due to the anniversary nature of those episodes.

As for the gaps between series 8 and BtE, I would like some of that filled in, but it needn’t take up much time and leaving stuff ambiguous for comic effect is fine.

  • > Rob Grant knew how to say ?no, that?s not good enough, chuck it out?
    Doug Naylor doesn?t.

Yeah, you obviously know this to be fact.

  • >well lets just say i wasnt hearing people say oh i dont like it anymore, or its lost its way, or like previously mentioned? its like milking a dead cow

In the LATE 90’s? Are you sure?

  • >well lets just say i wasnt hearing people say oh i dont like it anymore, or its lost its way, or like previously mentioned? its like milking a dead cow

    >In the LATE 90?s? Are you sure?

I think in the LATE 90’s that was pretty much *all* that people had to say about RD. It seemed to me that a lot of people I knew who loved the show through to VI got turned off by VII.

  • Despite being a fan of VII & VIII, I often wondered if they would have improved with Rob Grant on board and to a degree I still do..

Having seen Rob Friday though, I find the following statement ludicrous.

    > Rob Grant knew how to say ?no, that?s not good enough, chuck it out?
    Doug Naylor doesn?t.

If this were the case, Friday nights show would have lasted all of 5 minutes.

    Sad but true.

  • >I think in the LATE 90?s that was pretty much *all* that people had to say about RD. It seemed to me that a lot of people I knew who loved the show through to VI got turned off by

Hence my confusion. I think Dax is forgetting that Red Dwarf VI was actually in the early 90’s.

  • > Rob Grant knew how to say ?no, that?s not good enough, chuck it out?
    Doug Naylor doesn?t.

    >If this were the case, Friday nights show would have lasted all of 5 minutes.

Was it, err, not good then? Brave of Rob to move into stand up after all these years, really.

  • >Hence my confusion. I think Dax is forgetting that Red Dwarf VI was actually in the early 90?s

series 6 was 1993, and series 8 was 1999 i believe and id guess red dwarf was at its peak during that time, maybe im wrong!

and i mean now days u get negative comments towards how the show has gone

  • The negative comments come from people who don’t know any better. Most non-Dwarfers I know are always surprised to find out the last series was 10 years ago. But then it surprises me how many non-fans know about the movie’s development hell. Somehow that news filtered through to the masses (when I say ‘masses’ I still mean people who are interested in television programmes, not idiots)

  • Re: The non-movie. I was going through some old Dwarf stuff the other day, and amongst them was a signed photo of Robert Llewellyn from around ten years ago, along with a newsletter informing us that the movie would be filming soon, ‘no, honest’.

    Hahahaha.

  • Just think if the movie HAD been made 6 years ago. Where would we be now? Probably on a proper site.

  • Haha! From today’s TOS DJ write-up:

inside-fanboy Andrew Ellard boldly takes to the stage to reveal a Top Secret email from Doug Naylor… which we can’t possibly recreate here. Suffice to say it included the words “commissioned”, “to write” and “new series”.

    Nice.

  • >?commissioned?, ?to write? and ?new series?.

So Doug told Andrew to write a new series of Commissioned, sounds good.

  • I thought it was the new series of Monkfish: “Monkfish: Commissioned”

“Coming soon to Dave in a brand new drama series, John Actor is Doug Monkfish, the tough, uncompromising sitcom writer. He shouts and points and tells Andrew to put his knickers on and go and make him a cup of tea.”

  • “Right you, spread ’em!” They look so much like trailers of the time as well: beautifully done :)

  • Hey folks….

Well I have to admit I am new here, and an American. Love me or Hate me, I can deal.

We here in American abosolutely love Red Dwarf (As well as Doctor Who & Hitchhikers). Quite a bit different than American Sci-Fi like Star Trek.

I have to say… We just recently were able to get “BTE” on Blu-ray here in the States in our local video stores as well as Netflix.com.

So I have to say this… Yes it is true, some series/seasons are better than others, just as some episodes are better than others as well. Yet to be totally honest we love every episode & are just excited to here that there is going to be 6 more episodes and maybe more!

We are big enough fans that we don’t care if the next 6 episodes are 6 stories, 3 – 2 parters, 2 – 3 parters, or 1 big 6 parter. Hell we are just happy to have more!

Hey DOUG…. & DAVE channel… if funding is problem… come to the states…. we have money to help with budjeting! As long as you promise to release Blu-rays here in the states & give BBC-America a chance to air the episodes as well, OR our SyFy channel!

Heck… KERA our local PBS station here in Dallas. (The one that Introduced Monty Python to the USA) might be even able to help with funding!

BTW…. Our local video store sold out of all 150 copies of the Blu-ray version of Red Dwarf first day it was released!

Even though we have to wait an additional 3 to 6 months for us to see new episodes of Dr. Who, Torchwood & even Red Dwarf… we are always anxiously awaiting!

    TGC
