Now, we have Twitter. Brilliant! But it’s relentlessly spoiled by feeble-minded morons who should keep their opinions to themselves rather than directly insulting someone’s hard work. From Doug Naylor’s Twitter page, Oct 15th, somebody wrote: “People who watch Red Dwarf out of choice need to have a long hard look at themselves.” Doug’s reply: “Sold more Videos + DVDs than any Brit comedy. Highest ever ratings on BBC2 + Dave. An Emmy. MIMOP a fan. Maybe it’s U?” Then: “doesn’t change the fact that it’s shit. justin bieber sells millions of albums and people think his music’s shit.” Doug’s reply: “Why do people buy his music if they think it’s shit?” Then: “you’re missing the point. it doesn’t matter how much you’ve sold, it’s still shit.” *sigh* October 22, 2012 at 9:33 pm #202758 Ben KirkhamParticipant I’m beginning to understand why Steven Moffat closed his account. October 22, 2012 at 11:38 pm #202765 JoParticipant I was all set to agree with you, but to be fair to the original tweeter he didn’t @reply or even # his tweet. Doug must’ve been searching for “Red Dwarf” and made the choice to reply to it. In the same way I (as TORDFC) got stuck in a long debate about whether RDX uses canned laughter, I corrected someone who was complaining about it after finding them in a “Red Dwarf” twitter search. It wanted to smash my head against a brick wall by the end of it, but it was entirely my own fault, I should’ve just left her to her misinformed opinion! October 22, 2012 at 11:47 pm #202768 Ben KirkhamParticipant “I was all set to agree with you, but to be fair to the original tweeter he didn’t @reply or even # his tweet. Doug must’ve been searching for “Red Dwarf” and made the choice to reply to it.” Ah, I see, Jo. Thank you for clearing that up. :) I think sometimes with social networking it’s so easy to get involved in a slanging match with someone. Internet trolls use the anonymity of their computer to hide behind. Makes you wonder if they’d have the courage to say it to the person face-to-face. October 23, 2012 at 12:06 am #202769 RidleyParticipant A few years ago, being able to talk to your idols on a regular basis would have been tricky. Now, we have Twitter. They ignore me either way! Who or what is MIMOP? October 23, 2012 at 12:22 am #202770 Ben KirkhamParticipant “Who or what is MIMOP?” I’ve been trying to figure this out, too. Any ideas anyone? October 23, 2012 at 12:51 am #202772 Ian SymesKeymaster Massively Irritating Man Of Pecos. October 23, 2012 at 1:02 am #202773 JoParticipant You know, mimop! Like: “I’ve lost mipea!” October 23, 2012 at 1:49 am #202775 CackThosePantsParticipant “Sold more Videos + DVDs than any Brit comedy” Surely OFAH has done better? Anyway biggest cunt on twitter. Ricky Gervais. October 23, 2012 at 1:51 am #202776 Nick RParticipant Well Linwood Boomer produced the American pilot… so maybe it’s “Malcolm In Middle Original Producer a fan”? October 23, 2012 at 6:52 am #202781 PongoParticipant Maybe Doug should spend more time on scripts rather than Twitter. But who am I to complain? MIMOP’s a fan. October 23, 2012 at 11:00 am #202782 Seb PatrickKeymaster “Sold more Videos + DVDs than any Brit comedy” Surely OFAH has done better? Not sure about more recent DVD figures, but Dwarf was a VHS behemoth back in the day. RD and Mr Bean were the biggest selling comedy videos in the UK by quite a considerable margin from everything else. October 23, 2012 at 11:22 am #202783 NoFroParticipant Does OFAH have much of an international audience? October 23, 2012 at 11:36 am #202784 Pete Part ThreeParticipant >Who or what is MIMOP? I actually googled this last night as I thought I was missing something obvious. I found…nothing. Doug should probably stay away from the search button if he doesn’t want a slanging match with armchair critics (which, on various topics, everyone on Twitter is). The Moff was getting nasty stuff @-directed which is something else entirely. October 23, 2012 at 3:20 pm #202788 CackThosePantsParticipant Mind you OFAH is not worth getting on dvd as it’s cut in some episodes and library music has replaced some of the soundtrack. The worst example being the music that plays when Rodney looks at Damian. Beeb can’t be arsed to pay for the rights. TV though it’s still uncut in the evening onwards. October 23, 2012 at 4:02 pm #202793 Jonathan CappsKeymaster > Beeb can’t be arsed to pay for the rights. Yes, it’ll definitely be as simple as that. October 23, 2012 at 5:50 pm #202796 JoParticipant Doug should probably stay away from the search button if he doesn’t want a slanging match with armchair critics (which, on various topics, everyone on Twitter is). The Moff was getting nasty stuff @-directed which is something else entirely. Don’t get me wrong, Doug gets plenty of stuff directly @replied to him too, just not in this case. October 23, 2012 at 5:56 pm #202798 CackThosePantsParticipant ^ What else could it be? October 23, 2012 at 6:57 pm #202799 StephenSimpsonParticipant Not surprised he’s actively looking for “Red Dwarf” opinion. But shame he took it upon himself to answer. But you can see his obvious love & passion for the show. October 23, 2012 at 7:51 pm #202801 CackThosePantsParticipant Doug should have just ignored the guy unless it was Rob Grant fucking around. October 24, 2012 at 1:23 am #202809 MoonlightParticipant That would be amazingly hilarious. October 25, 2012 at 2:37 am #202842 Ben PaddonParticipant What else could it be? There are literally dozens of other reasons the Beeb might have been unwilling or unable to license the music for the DVD release. Stop being such a testicle. October 25, 2012 at 9:46 am #202844 CackThosePantsParticipant > There are literally dozens of other reasons the Beeb might have been unwilling or unable to license the music for the DVD release. Stop being such a testicle. They had no problem doing it on VII & VIII for example, even a Doctor Who episode which had a Beatles song. Stop being such a bunghole. October 25, 2012 at 11:20 am #202845 JamesTCParticipant They had no problem doing it on VII & VIII for example, even a Doctor Who episode which had a Beatles song. Stop being such a bunghole. Yet they had problems clearing music for: Red Dwarf: Series V Doctor Who: Revelation of the Daleks It is almost as if it is a complicated issue and not easily sorted out. Also, stop being such a testicle. October 25, 2012 at 11:29 am #202846 Ben KirkhamParticipant CackThosePants, Read this. Educate yourself. Stop being a bunghole. And a testicle. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Music_licensing October 25, 2012 at 11:32 am #202847 Jonathan CappsKeymaster > They had no problem doing it on VII & VIII for example That was either library music, or original Goodall tracks which would’ve been owned by the BBC. October 25, 2012 at 3:33 pm #202864 CackThosePantsParticipant > That was either library music, or original Goodall tracks which would’ve been owned by the BBC. Deep Forest and that Pulp Fiction song are hardly library music are they? I bet the Pulp Fiction one wasn’t cheap either considering it was everywhere in the second half of the 90’s. Probably more but I can’t be arsed. * Don’t think I didn’t notice the 3 posts above were made in the space of 12 minutes….. October 25, 2012 at 3:42 pm #202865 pfmParticipant It’s from Reservoir Dogs. If that’s ‘Little Green Bag’ you’re referring to. October 25, 2012 at 3:47 pm #202866 Danny StephensonKeymaster Also it’s worth noting that at the time, VII and VIII were made under the BBC, which pay a blanket fee to the Big Four (or it the Big Three, it’s probably One now isn’t it…) in order for usage, but I know not of what happens when you wish to sell the product on DVD, but it’s one reason as to why music that would normally be expensive to license, isn’t. October 25, 2012 at 3:48 pm #202867 CackThosePantsParticipant > It’s from Reservoir Dogs. If that’s ‘Little Green Bag’ you’re referring to Yeh that’s it. That scene for me was Red Dwarf at it’s lowest point! October 25, 2012 at 3:50 pm #202868 Danny StephensonKeymaster It’s from Reservoir Dogs. If that’s ‘Little Green Bag’ you’re referring to. George Baker, we’ll put that one on the board. ‘Ba-ker’.and… bramble-picker, Don’t know where that one came from… October 25, 2012 at 3:53 pm #202869 genericnerdyusernameParticipant > Yeh that’s it. October 25, 2012 at 4:53 pm #202871 Mr-StabbyParticipant I feel for Doug and other people like Steven Moffat. You can get all the praise in the world from hundreds of people on twitter, but it just takes one cunt to totally ruin it . By all means be critical in a constructive way, or just say you weren’t a fan, but to actively insult it AND the people who watch it makes you a special kind of douche. One thing i’ve noticed actually (though it’s not always the case but often is) is that people who like something or who have constructive criticism will often put ‘I thought it was great’ or ‘i think that’ whereas people who pointlessly insult something will often state their opinion as fact. ‘It was shit’ ‘That was the worst piece of TV ever made’. That kind of thing. Says something about the commenter. October 25, 2012 at 6:22 pm #202877 Ben PaddonParticipant Sigh. This is the problem with an old show coming back – you get people like CackThosePants coming into forums and making incredibly stupid blanket statements, acting as though they know everything about a subject simply because they have an opinion, and all it does it oh, now I understand why TF2 players hated the game going free-to-play. October 25, 2012 at 6:39 pm #202878 CackThosePantsParticipant Sigh. G&T regulars never cease to amaze me… October 25, 2012 at 6:44 pm #202879 clemParticipant > bramble-picker, Don’t know where that one came from… The Big Issue! It’s like Bunty, only written by tramps. October 25, 2012 at 6:54 pm #202880 Ben PaddonParticipant Sigh. G&T regulars never cease to amaze me… Which begs the question: Why the bloody Hell do you hang out here?
