A few years ago, being able to talk to your idols on a regular basis would have been tricky. Now, we have Twitter. Brilliant! But it’s relentlessly spoiled by feeble-minded morons who should keep their opinions to themselves rather than directly insulting someone’s hard work.

From Doug Naylor’s Twitter page, Oct 15th, somebody wrote:

“People who watch Red Dwarf out of choice need to have a long hard look at themselves.”

Doug’s reply: “Sold more Videos + DVDs than any Brit comedy. Highest ever ratings on BBC2 + Dave. An Emmy. MIMOP a fan. Maybe it’s U?”

Then: “doesn’t change the fact that it’s shit. justin bieber sells millions of albums and people think his music’s shit.”

Doug’s reply: “Why do people buy his music if they think it’s shit?”

Then: “you’re missing the point. it doesn’t matter how much you’ve sold, it’s still shit.”

    *sigh*

I was all set to agree with you, but to be fair to the original tweeter he didn’t @reply or even # his tweet. Doug must’ve been searching for “Red Dwarf” and made the choice to reply to it.

In the same way I (as TORDFC) got stuck in a long debate about whether RDX uses canned laughter, I corrected someone who was complaining about it after finding them in a “Red Dwarf” twitter search. It wanted to smash my head against a brick wall by the end of it, but it was entirely my own fault, I should’ve just left her to her misinformed opinion!

Ah, I see, Jo. Thank you for clearing that up. :)

I think sometimes with social networking it’s so easy to get involved in a slanging match with someone. Internet trolls use the anonymity of their computer to hide behind. Makes you wonder if they’d have the courage to say it to the person face-to-face.

Not sure about more recent DVD figures, but Dwarf was a VHS behemoth back in the day. RD and Mr Bean were the biggest selling comedy videos in the UK by quite a considerable margin from everything else.

I actually googled this last night as I thought I was missing something obvious. I found…nothing.

Doug should probably stay away from the search button if he doesn’t want a slanging match with armchair critics (which, on various topics, everyone on Twitter is). The Moff was getting nasty stuff @-directed which is something else entirely.

Mind you OFAH is not worth getting on dvd as it’s cut in some episodes and library music has replaced some of the soundtrack. The worst example being the music that plays when Rodney looks at Damian. Beeb can’t be arsed to pay for the rights. TV though it’s still uncut in the evening onwards.

Also it’s worth noting that at the time, VII and VIII were made under the BBC, which pay a blanket fee to the Big Four (or it the Big Three, it’s probably One now isn’t it…) in order for usage, but I know not of what happens when you wish to sell the product on DVD, but it’s one reason as to why music that would normally be expensive to license, isn’t.

I feel for Doug and other people like Steven Moffat. You can get all the praise in the world from hundreds of people on twitter, but it just takes one cunt to totally ruin it . By all means be critical in a constructive way, or just say you weren’t a fan, but to actively insult it AND the people who watch it makes you a special kind of douche.

One thing i’ve noticed actually (though it’s not always the case but often is) is that people who like something or who have constructive criticism will often put ‘I thought it was great’ or ‘i think that’ whereas people who pointlessly insult something will often state their opinion as fact. ‘It was shit’ ‘That was the worst piece of TV ever made’. That kind of thing. Says something about the commenter.

Much as I admire Doug and happily say that he seems like a really nice guy, I`m not sure he is so open about mistakes he has made. He does seem sensitive to criticism (understandably) and in the documentaries very often blames Rob/the director/the budget/the BBC/Chloe etc. rather than admitting any mistakes. Often I`m sure these are accurate though. In his recent comments about the movie he also blames other people for telling him to ask for too big a budget rather than taking any responsibility himself. I digress anyway…

I can understand again Doug getting involved in this but as so many genuine fans must ask him questions about the show it`s a shame that he would waste his time with a troll. The references to Rob`s solo work are a little unfortunate too.

The budget, maybe, but the others? I’d like to see an example of where he ‘blames’ Rob…

    > The references to Rob`s solo work are a little unfortunate too.

Rob has slagged VII in the past (can’t for the life of me remember when or in what context) and he said he didn’t even watch VIII. IMO that makes it alright for Doug to comment on Rob’s series’ (which, afaik, he never has up until now, though someone else might know different).

    > The budget, maybe, but the others? I’d like to see an example of where he ‘blames’ Rob…

As I said, I`m sure most of the things Doug says are true such as `Rob didn`t want to re-write The End` or `It was Rob`s idea to do Waiting for God`. Doug`s comments on the Series II DVD about, `Rob always said that we should forget about continuity if we can improve the show` are ironic though as in his episode of Carpool Rob Grant says the exact opposite.

Again though I`m not trying to be negative about Doug because he is clearly a good guy but it is a trait that I picked up from the DVDs that he does seem sensitive to criticism. The only time I can remember him taking responsibility for something was the two additional Skutters in the remastered. As Series VII, VIII and BTE have received a lot of criticism that makes sense and I completely understand why he might be defensive. It also shows why the comments about Rob leaving may have touched a nerve though.

    > Rob has slagged VII in the past (can’t for the life of me remember when or in what context) and he said he didn’t even watch VIII. IMO that makes it alright for Doug to comment on Rob’s series’ (which, afaik, he never has up until now, though someone else might know different).

I do think that context is everything here.

Rob was asked in a radio interview what he thought about Series VII and VIII and so answered.

Doug didn`t have to comment at all here and has no connection to Dark Ages/The Strangerers (whereas Rob will always have a connection to the characters that he co-created).

Really there is a difference between rob saying stuff about series 7 and 8 considering he was co-creator and red dwarf was his baby also but for doug to say stuff about robs solo work is abit harsh or even childish

the only thing i can remember rob ever saying is series 7 was like watching an ex wifes honeymoon video and that there was nothing in it for him and that he had to be drunk in order to like it

but of course doug is the main writer of red dwarf and fans are loyal to the show and everyone involved so everyone doesn’t wanna see doug in a bad light, which is understandable

    #203145

Tbf, Rob was asked about his opinion on VII and VIII directly, whereas Doug wasn’t. However, that Charmantides is a fucking cock.

As in, Doug wasn’t asked his opinion on Rob’s solo work directly. Not that it makes a difference…

I forgot why I thought this was important.

I stupidly had a bit of a pop at him on Twitter, and received a charming retort mentioning my ‘paedophile goatee’. I can take comfort in the knowledge that he’s clearly a sad little prick with no friends.

Have just read that back and realised it sounds rather bitter. I just find it a bit rich that for all his cod-intellectual droning, the best he can manage is to pick on someone’s appearance, especially when he’s hiding behind a mask of anonymity himself. Anyway, I’m done with the fucker.

It can’t be that “beloved” a British institution if he hates one of the creators so much.

Also, anybody anywhere loses any argument whatsoever as soon as they decide to bring the “rape” metaphor into it.

    He’s also clearly someone who thinks he’s more intelligent than he is. Nevertheless, I raised a wry smile at this comment, which he said to someone in relation to something else entirely;

Consequence of interacting with your audience: They feel entitled.

Let’s just see where Disney take Star Wars before we draw a solid line under that……;)

No, the only time I’ve found that even mildly amusing was in the South Park episode. Though surely the key thing is that this guy was saying this to Doug directly. Childish doesn’t even cover that.
