And Kryten keeps Lister’s spare parts in a freezer in Lemons.

Unfortunately Kryten’s spare parts are also on display in DNA* thus invalidating the two-episode limit.

[*Get your mind out of the gutter, I mean his spare heads and hand, not his double-polaroid.]

Plus it’s not what I was thinking of.

OK, but to be clear the connection I was suggesting was specifically unexpected spare parts from building or repairing something. Obviously I hadn’t forgotten about Kryten’s spare heads and appendages, which are spare by design.

Fair enough. I was just trying to find a less boring way of saying “not what I was thinking of”.

Nobody’s even vaguely close to getting the Gunmen/OTG connection, incidentally

Rimmer shown drinking (non-hologrammatic) alcohol to the point that it makes him sick?

Wouldn’t the parts from the Marilyn Monroe droid count too?

The connection is something that isn’t in the episodes themselves.

Both feature actresses who later went onto guest roles in Holby City between 2008 and 2009?

Rimmer talking about somebody without realising they’re right behind him. Hollister in Only the Good, Katerina in BTE1.

The Hollister one was in Pete, Pt2.

I couldn’t conceive of it being about anything other than OTG’s broadcast weirdness, but couldn’t make Gunmen fit.

Oh my.  Well hang my head in shame and shoot me out in a garbage pod.  I was thinking of Out of Time not Gunmen, in case my ridiculous mistake wasn’t clear.  *Infinite facepalming*

That’s a lot of usage of the word ‘cliffhangers’.  Cliffhanger cliffhanger cliffhanger.

I was thinking of Out of Time not Gunmen, in case my ridiculous mistake wasn’t clear.

Should have been obvious given that Gunmen is the episode that actually got a direct continuation.

On that topic, Waiting for God and Stoke Me a Clipper.

Last time I watched Only The Good (last week), I thought oh, it’s that guy from the 1971 Doctor Who serial “The Mutants”. Except it isn’t. How could it be. Stupid, stupid, stupid.

since no one’s getting them: Gunmen and Rimmerworld both imply something that I believe never comes up again/is directly contradicted by later episodes

Only the Good offers a description of something we later see with a slight difference in Back to Earth: Part One

and a new one: Polymorph and Terrorform, dialogue

Is it about powering up/using solar batteries for Rimmer’s hard light belt (and the implication that it takes a lot of power to run him in hard light mode)?

Yes! Both episodes imply that hard-light isn’t necessarily his default setting, and that it requires more power. Later in The Promised Land, he goes black-and-white and mono but remains rock hard.

Not that this changes the answer, but it’s kinda interesting this only came about because they had Rimmer in the wrong jacket at the start of Gunmen so threw in a line about powering up his hard light drive so he could go into VR

Kinda cool they later pick up on it in a different episode. And not just the example from Rimmer world you gave, but also later on he says there’s solar power on the escape pod so his hard light would remain powered for as long as needed.

Re hard light being the default in later episodes, maybe they found tech on the ship they find the  time drive on that gives him near infinite power.

He seems confused about the concept.
