50 extra minutes approximately accounts for all the deleted scenes from Cured.

I, personally, am looking forward to Timewave Xtended, which runs for 65 minutes, and includes five minutes of the camp chap mincing around going ‘ooh’ in a very effeminate way while Cat and Lister projectile vomit.

I would actually respect it if the 50 minutes is an Xtended Mechocracy with the final scene with Talkie and Rimmer stretched out 50 minutes with Talkie’s “would you like some toast” non-stop and then Rimmer’s face slowly changing into different levels of anguish.

70 minutes extra must be for the audio commentaries?

Audio commentaries generally aren’t included in the extras runtime. So no.

    #224417

I also doubt they’d do commentaries on two and a third episodes.

They get a third of the way through Timewave and are like, “Nope. Can’t do it. We’re out.”

The Timewave commentary would be half Robert saying “now this is funny, oh look at that CGI”, and half Danny shouting “CLASSIC LINE! CLASSIC LINE!”, just like all the rest. With a light sprinkling of Chris saying “I don’t remember any of this”. Craig is off (being) sick.

weren’t the commentaries mostly “oooh chris, ham and cheese” “lunchbox HAM” and other things such as that? i haven’t actually listened to many of them so i don’t really know if they’re all like that.

i do remember one Series VII commentary where everyone was unsure if the 2D shitty CGI starbug was a model or not, though

Oh yes, they spend around 40% of the runtime of the entire show calling things either ham or pony. There’s a VI commentary where Bobby watches a model shot, and says “ah yes, look at that lovely CGI – can’t do that with models!”

All 50 extra minutes are just one shot in the documentary where Doug Naylor is adding as many words as he can to an insult about millennials.

The cast commentaries are quite funny, despite all the constant repeating ham jokes and fairly terrible taste when it comes to the show (“This one is classic Dwarf” – Bobby, on Krytie TV), it’s really nice to hear the guys having a nice time. But they’re rarely that informative, and often full of mistakes.
Doug’s commentary BtE and the Rob & Doug / Doug & Ed commentaries on the Bodysnatcher box are by far the best.

I don’t go to the cast commentaries for trivia, I go for pure comfort.

I listen to one and feel like I’ve heard them all.

the commentary on The End: The Original Assembly is truly where it’s at, featuring such highlights as-

ROB GRANT (miming Todhunter): There are five people on this ship, Rimmer…

DOUG- the audience was full of old ladies who thought they were watching A Question of Sport

ROB GRANT: do we really believe this is the Drive Room of a ship 3 miles long… it’s one step away from just having a bloody steering wheel.

the other commentaries on the Bodysnatcher Collection were quite good too tbh

The Bodysnatcher Collection is the best DVD set ever released.

How awesome was Norman on the VIII commentary? Classic.

Ages since I listened to the commentaries. They’re brilliant, but the problem is how they age. Those first couple of series are 15 years old now, and there are dated references and all-sorts. Even Red Dwarf VIII was in pretty recent memory at the time.

    #224501

I like the commentaries a lot and they are greatly missed. Hoping they return for the final box set when the show ends.

Part of the extra minutes could be for the ‘When everyone was Kryten’ documentary which is surely inevitable??

As much as I make fun of the commentaries, I do rather enjoy them. Having Chris Barrie commentate on the whole of VII should be interesting.

If you you want to be reminded how great everyone is together listen to the empire podcast which has just been posted in the other thread.

Hitler or Aniter should’ve been on the spine.

I just adore the idea of featuring Hitler on the spine.

I’d be afraid some places (particularly specific countries in Europe) might refuse to stock it, if it had Hitler on the cover.

That said, I wonder how Cured went down in Germany? I know videogames such as Wolfenstein 3D and Doom had difficulties over there due to Nazi imagery, but does camp Not Hitler count as Nazi imagery? Or have they gotten over it since the 90s? I’m sure the public were fine with it – there’s nothing objectionable in the show – but what did the censor people think?

Wolf 3D had them remove all the moustaches off of the Hitler paintings so they just looked like some vaguely Hitler-esque dude.

I don’t know how to phrase “went down in Germany” better, that’s not exactly what I mean, but it’s as close as I can get. Basically I’m asking if having Hitler in things is OK now.

Great, now I’m googling whether or not you’re allowed to use Hitler’s likeness without paying his family/somebody

This is exactly the kind of reason I adore the idea of featuring Hitler on the spine. It’d be gratuitously controversial in certain people’s eyes.

I think that’s the same thought behind putting Timewave on the DVD

Yes, but as one long Deleted Scene.

30 minutes of extras will be a feature entitled “more entertaining than Timewave” and will be half an hour of all sorts of incredibly entertaining things like Craig squawking around at the end of Quarantine, the entire cast saying that people didn’t like Back to Earth because they didn’t have laughs, and the scene where Hollister explains Pete’s full meal and what happened next stretched out to take seven minutes.

Like having a camp man in a pink dress. They should have put Ziggy on the spine.

Okay, that didn’t work. It was a spine-ready image of Ziggy, anyway.
