Back To The 1980’s: When Movie Legends and Props Become Reality

Back To The 1980’s (founded by John A. Griffiths and Ian Findlay) has established itself as a leading supplier of props and vehicles from the most iconic TV shows and movies of the 1980s. Their mission is to transform any event into a unique and entertaining experience thanks to authentic pieces that defined the popular culture of one of the most beloved decades.

Fans of Red Dwarf will be delighted to know that this very company has acquired a giant replica of the Starbug, which appeared in the AA Stellar Rescue commercials. We’ve covered the Starbug auction in our previous articles.

Interesting fact: This scene was never broadcast on Czech television.

Did they cut the entire scene or just that shot?

Eh, maybe I’m suffering from computer senility. Now I found out that this scene is actually there. But it’s true that some scenes are not included in the Czech version. Mainly because only the remastered version was broadcast in our country.

Lister of Smeg is far too attractive for a sci-fi convention. He wouldn’t need a chastity cheat.

In fact, he was leaving the costume competition in the company of the newly married Mrs. Lister, and I heard he used the chastitycheat!

This weekend, Trpaslicon 2026 took place. We are still getting together, but at least I can share with you photos of the contestants in the traditional costume competition inspired by Red Dwarf, Terry Pratchett, or other British creations.

Trpaslicon 2026 is taking place this weekend, from March
27th to March 29th, at ZŠ Květnového vítězství in Prague. This fan-run
festival is dedicated to British humor, sci-fi, and fantasy, and while
it does not feature the original British actors or creators, it hosts a
variety of prominent Czech guests. These guests include the series’
Czech dubbing actors, such as Kamil Halbich (Rimmer), Martin Sobotka (Lister) and Zdeněk Dušek (Kryten), as well
as the dubbing director Janoš Vaculík and book translators. Although
named after Red Dwarf, the event covers a wide range of other British
comedy series through its “Britcom” line and features other authors like
Terry Pratchett. This year’s edition will also feature a special
remembrance of Red Dwarf co-creator Rob Grant, who passed away in early
2026. For those interested in learning more about the festival’s
atmosphere, an English report from last year is available to read.

Robert also met his Czech voice actor, Zdeněk Dušek (the Czech voice of Kryten). As Robert himself noted, they are like twins who were separated at birth. The panel was very touching and extremely funny. Robert Llewellyn does not speak Czech, and Zdeněk Dušek does not speak English. In any case, they agreed that Robert would one day adapt one of Zdeněk’s films or series into English.

They both have the same sense of humor, so they complemented each other perfectly despite the language barrier.

Comic-Con Prague 2025 has just released a video recording of a panel discussion with Red Dwarf co-writer Rob Grant and the most handsome man on board, Danny John-Jules.

Rob Grant, who as one half of the Grant Naylor duo was responsible for the birth of the entire phenomenon and co-authored successful novels such as Infinity Welcomes Careful Drivers and Better Than Life, reminisced about the golden era of the series during the panel. He was joined by Danny John-Jules, whose character Cat — a creature evolved from Lister’s pregnant cat Frankenstein over three million years — is one of the most iconic elements of the British sci-fi sitcom.

The recording is now available in English with Czech subtitles, so you can fully enjoy stories about how the Emmy Award-winning series was actually filmed.

You can reminisce about this giant of space humor here – cctalks.cz/grant

It’s paywalled, but it costs less than a pint of beer ;)

I was at that panel myself and it was great. At the panel, they show Rob and Danny the April Fool’s montage I created that year that got Danny to show up at the Moto GP in costume later that year.

Kocour means The Cat, btw ;)

    Memories of Trpaslicon 2003

The first Trpaslicon, subtitled „The First Universal,“ took place from February 14 to 16, 2003, and started a tradition that has become legendary over the years. Originally a modest gathering of fans of British humor, science fiction, and fantasy, it attracted just over 120 visitors to the Květnového vítězství Elementary School, Czech republic and laid the foundations for the festival we love today.

The first Trpaslicon was rated as a successful „small con,“ where there were almost no hiccups and the atmosphere was extremely relaxed. As the main organizer Kohy concluded at the time: „The event went smoothly, no deaths or injuries, no losses reported. See you next year!“.

Neat! The big rumour is that there is at least one missing Doctor Who in the lot(s) Film is Fabulous are working with, and obviously that takes up most of the buzz, so this is a nice unexpected treat, potentially.

According the comment section, they are now taking Christmass break, and plan to have an announcement about Doctor Who at the start of the next year.

Mike Tucker, Peter Wragg’s fx team member while series VI was filming, has said:

It’s Red Dwarf 6 – and I have no idea how these cans got into a private collection. The neg was all given to BBC Heritage in 2005

All the neg for the modelwork for Red Dwarf was retained by the BBC VFX dept. It was all retransferred at the BBC when the show was released on DVD and those mute rushes were included as extras on the relevant seasons. When the VFX dept was closed in 2005 all the neg was passed on to BBC Heritage for safekeeping.

Editors often keep items that may otherwise be disposed of – this might be a 35mm pos print for example – kept by an editor perhaps and now passed on to FIF. – its really good that they are in safe hands at least –

The DVD transfer was done in 2002 by BBC colourist Jonathan Wood.
If you get yourselves a copy of the Series Vl dvd, it should be a good guide to what existed at that point

I met Rob Grant in April 2025 at Comic-Con in Prague and asked him how his Titan project was going. He would like to realize the project someday, but he doesn’t have the money for a TV show and no television station has shown any interest, so far. He also mentioned that the project could be realized as an animated series in the style of Rick and Morty. He obviously likes this series :) He would therefore like to at least publish the script as a book.

Boys from Red Dwarf revealed behind-the-scenes madness, upside-down toupée, and plans for the future!

Doug Naylor, Craig Charles, Danny John-Jules, and Chloe Annett met at Comic Con Bristol 2025—and it was a healthy dose of nostalgia, humor, and surprises.

We (didn’t) find out why UKTV canceled the planned 90-minute special, how the legendary Duane Dibbley came to be, and that Doug plans to publish an unrealized script as a novel.

And watch out—the 40th anniversary is coming, and with it, plans to celebrate Red Dwarf! 🎭

Was the finding Kochanski thing new though?

I think so. People are basically asking for novel spoilers now.
“The show was about other things,” of which the Lister time travel story was but one, “and it was about tracking down Kochanski” sounds like an unrelated plot thread in the present day. If they found her, Chloë was presumably going to be in it? Not that that detail’s relevant now.
If they wanted to avoid having to de-age more people, they’d track down Lister while he was alone on Titan or Mimas or something.

From what I understand, the current Lister was supposed to travel back in time before the original Lister went into stasis. To prevent him from going into stasis and help him live the life he never had the chance to live and marry Kochanski. The current Rimmer would also travel back in time to prevent the current Lister from going on this mission.

Now, from this point on, things get a little bit confusing…

What are the differences, what are the localizations in the Czech Republic, etc. I have English transcripts of scripts 1-52 and Czech transcripts of scripts 1-73 (I miss the Promised Land). Haha, it’s actually a quote from Red Dwarf episode Demons and Angels.

In the original it is this sentence of Holly:
“Rude alert!  Rude alert!  An electrical fire has knocked out my voice recognition unicycle! Many Wurlitzers are missing from my database!”

The Czech version then reads like this:
“Větroplach! Větroplach! Elektrický zkrat vypnul můj bicykl vyjadřování. V mé databázi teď chybí spousta Slovinců. Opusťte lov!”
It should be “slov” (word) there, so they changed it to “Slovinců” :)

So yeah, “Databáze slovinců” is basically “Word database” aka dictionary :)

It’s a great pity that Smega Drive doesn’t support diacritics.

At the Prague Comic Con in April, he saw our April Fool’s Day collage, where he was in a Moravian costume, and promised that the next time he comes to the Czech Republic, he will actually wear the costume (and dance). Three months have passed and he has kept his promise.

I can´t believe totally forgot to share our crazy memories of Comic-Con Prague 2025 with you. This Happened in April 2025.

I went to Comic Con Prague together with Zammpera and other members of our local fandom. This year, Danny John Jules and Rob Grant were guests at Comic Con!

We headed to Danny John Jules first for an autograph session. We had a gift bag set up for him (similar to the one Craig Charles got from us). The bag contained a Trpaslicon T-shirt, a Trpaslicon Jojo, a Trpaslicon pen, and lots of other odds and ends. Danny greeted us with a huge smile – he immediately started unpacking the gift bag. When he pulled out the yo-yo, he beamed, “Aaah, shiny little thingy!” And when he found the shirt, he immediately wanted to change into it. He was wearing “Red Dwarf” in Spanish and saying, “Come take a picture of me putting on the shirt!”

So that’s what made this amazing photo.

He started asking our names and immediately remembered that the first time he was in Prague, filming Blade, there were Bára and Eva in the crew. And when he found out my name is Bára and that the girl behind us was called Eva, he organised a group photo. He promised to send me the photo right away, but you know Danny :)

Danny was also intrigued by the black London Jets t-shirt I had just worn and asked if we could get one for him too. Because all the gifts we just gave him weren’t enough :) The whole organising machine started to spin – we sorted out our tiny warehouse and handover via the main organiser of the Trpaslicon – Vehali. We only sell our merch at Trpaslicon (that’s why it’s so exclusive), and during the year things are very carefully stored (its somewhere in the boxes in someones grandma basement).

Me and Zamppera had a panel about the red dwarf this year too.

Right after we held a small gathering of Red Dwarf fans in costume

In the meantime, we ran into Rob Grant, who was admiring the fans wearing red dwarf clothes – especially our sweatshirt with the Red Dwarf logo (in Czech)! He asked us if we could get him one too. Meanwhile, Danny was telling everyone on any occasion that he would get a black London Jets t-shirt from us. 😄

At Danny and Rob’s panel there was an AI picture of the Red Dwarf crew in the Czech Republic projected – part of our April Fool’s joke, we made earlier that month. We wrote a short story on our Facebook page that the next Red Dwarf episode would take place in the Czech Republic and that filming was already planned. A lot of people actually believed it. Danny immediately started looking for that dress and Rob already had an idea in mind for the next Red Dwarf adventure in the Czech Republic.

On Saturday, we met up with Rob and Danny again for an autograph session and panel. Rob’s panel brought lots of news, behind the scenes stories and speculation about the future of Dwarf. I shared with the audience my theory that Rimmer is actually an alien because he was born on the moon Io. Rob looked at me with wide eyes and then said: “I never thought of that! I’ll have to work that out!” 😄
Rob also mentioned that he would like to continue working on the Titan project, but lacks funding.

After the panel, we caught Rob as he was leaving – we wanted to give him a contact for the promised sweatshirt. Instead of a business card, he reached into his wife’s bag and gave us a Red Dwarf embroidered beanie. “There are only five hats like this in the world – and one is yours now!”

We caught another glimpse of him at the Komarovo bookstore booth, where he was spontaneously signing the Red Dwarf omnibus. We discussed how to give him the gifts, and through the bookstore and Rob’s assistant, we finalized the delivery of a t-shirt for Danny and a sweatshirt for Rob. We packed the signed books in the bookstore with the fandom flyers we had previously had made.

During the afternoon we went to Vehali’s, who gave us T-shirts and a sweatshirt. And then we went back to the ComicCon. We handed everything over – and we couldn’t believe what had just happened.

Later, Danny posted a video of his trip home – and guess what he was wearing? Yeah. A black London Jets T-shirt. ❤️🚀
